Thermal sensibility changes during ischemic nerve block.

Changes in perception of pure thermal stimuli delivered to the hand at threshold intensity were observed during ischemic nerve block in 27 healthy subjects in order to study the significance of unmyelinated cutaneous cold receptors for thermal sensibility. Paresthesias and an increasing feeling of numbness were followed by a sudden change in cold sensation which developed a clearly dysesthetic quality. When complete motor block was reached and no myelinated axon functions were left, cold stimuli were still clearly but abnormally perceived. Warm sensation was little affected during the whole co

Thermosensory defects after cervical spinal cord lesions in the cat.

The behavioural thermosensitivity of cat paws was examined before and/or after restricted uni- and/or bilateral lesions had been made in the spinal cord between the first and fifth cervical segments. Unilateral lesions of the lateral funiculus, which involved at least its whole width at the level of the central canal, reproducibly were found to interfere with the contralateral sensitivity for temperature increases and/or decreases. No corresponding thermosensory deficiencies were found after unilateral lesions involving the ventral spinal quadrant or the dorsal funiculus. Various bilateral and

Development of the thermoregulatory mechanism - Raising the possibility that it is acquired at birth.

Whether the human thermoregulation mechanism in response to environmental temperature stimuli originates from learning or evolution remains an intriguing research question. Body temperature regulation depends not only on innate temperature sensation but also on acquired conditioning. Maintaining body temperature is essential for homeostasis, and the brain coordinates this process through a network of interconnected regulatory systems. In this review, we discuss how humans perceive temperature and establish thermoregulatory mechanisms at birth. We also propose an acquired connectivity structure

Impact of normobaric hyperoxia on finger vasomotor and thermoperceptual responses to local cold in normothermic and mildly hypothermic individuals.

AIM: To evaluate whether a sustained period of normobaric O2 breathing would modulate acral-skin vasoreactivity and thermosensitivity to localised cooling. METHODS: Eight healthy men performed a 30-min normoxic and hyperoxic (100% O2) hand cold (8 °C water) provocation, while immersed to the chest either in 35.1 (0.4)°C (normothermic trial) or in 21.0 (0.1)°C (hypothermic trial) water. Finger temperature, circulatory and perceptual responses were monitored. RESULTS: During the normothermic trial, hyperoxia augmented the cold-induced drop in finger temperature, and attenuated the rewarming (P

Role of the nasal cavity as a perception site of environmental humidity via a menthol-sensitive cold reception mechanism.

Humans can sense environmental humidity; however, the mechanism underlying this ability remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify whether the nasal cavity is involved in humidity sensation. Experiments were conducted on healthy young adults, in which controlled nasal inhalation was conducted under four air conditions (i.e., temperature of 25 °C or 34 °C with relative humidity [RH] of 30 % and 70 %). The temperature of the nasal mucosa and the thermal and humidity sensations of the inhaled air were assessed in the first experiment. In the second and third experiments, sublimated l-menthol wa

The effect of body surface area exposure to menthol on temperature regulation and perception in men.

INTRODUCTION: In warm conditions topical application of menthol increases cool sensations and influences deep body temperature. The purpose of this experiment was to explore whether different body surface areas (BSA) exposed to menthol influence these responses. It was hypothesized that the forcing function exerted by menthol will be proportionally related to BSA. METHOD: Using a within-participant design, 13 participants underwent three BSA exposures (Small [S; finger]; Medium [M; arm]; Large [L; upper/lower body]) to 4.13% menthol, and one Placebo exposure. During each exposure participants

Subtle Sensory Abnormalities Detected by Quantitative Sensory Testing in Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by paroxysmal pain attacks affecting the somatosensory distributions of the trigeminal nerve. It is thought to be associated with a neurovascular conflict most frequently, but pathomechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In general, no sensory deficit is found in routine clinical examination. There is limited data available, however, showing subtle subclinical sensory deficits upon extensive testing. OBJECTIVE: We used quantitative sensory testing (QST) to detect abnormalities in sensory processing in patients with TN by comparing the

Infrared detection without specialized infrared receptors in the bloodsucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

Bloodsucking bugs use infrared radiation (IR) for locating warm-blooded hosts and are able to differentiate between infrared and temperature (T) stimuli. This paper is concerned with the neuronal coding of IR in the bug Rhodnius prolixus. Data obtained are from the warm cells in the peg-in-pit sensilla (PSw cells) and in the tapered hairs (THw cells). Both warm cells responded to oscillating changes in air T and IR with oscillations in their discharge rates. The PSw cells produced stronger responses to T oscillations than the THw cells. Oscillations in IR did the reverse: they stimulated the l

[Spontaneous activity of cutaneous nociceptors in patients with painful polyneuropathy. Report of three patients].

Painful polyneuropathy may result from selective impairment of small diameter nerve fibers, while tactile and motor functions are preserved. In these patients clinical and electrophysiological assessment is usually unrevealing. We report three patients with a pure painful polyneuropathy. One of them had neurogenic pruritus additionally. Quantitative sensory analysis disclosed a slight warm hypoesthesia (3/3) and paradoxical hot sensation (2/3) in the feet. Intraneural recordings from the peroneal nerve demonstrated abnormal spontaneous activity in 8 of 17 nociceptive afferents. One of them dis

Interactions between chemical and thermal cutaneous stimuli: inhibition (counterirritation) and integration.

Methyl salicylate, a commonly used chemical counterirritant, was applied topically to the forearm to determine whether a nonpainful chemical irritation could inhibit the perception of another (weaker) chemical irritation. In the first experiment, sensations of irritation (burning and stinging) produced by a 10% solution of methyl salicylate were significantly attenuated when a 15% solution of the same chemical was applied to the opposite forearm. In the second experiment, neither the perception of warmth nor the heat pain threshold was affected by application of 10% or 15% methyl salicylate to

Exploring somatosensory innervation of the human lip: A focus on the vermilion.

BACKGROUND: The lips are a vital component of the face and are densely innervated to perform various functions. The lip edges are covered with mucocutaneous tissue called vermilion which is particularly receptive to touch and temperature. The aim of this study was to investigate the somatosensory innervation of human lips, focusing on sensory corpuscles and the presence of mechano-gated (ASIC2, PIEZO2, and TRPV4) and thermosensing (TRPV1, TRPM2, and RPM8) ion channels within them. METHODS: Twelve intact lips (6 upper and 6 lower) were obtained from non-embalmed frozen cadavers (five females a…

Pharmacological activation of TRPV4 produces immediate cell damage and induction of apoptosis in human melanoma cells and HaCaT keratinocytes.

BACKGROUND: TRPV4 channels are calcium-permeable cation channels that are activated by several physicochemical stimuli. Accordingly, TRPV4 channels have been implicated in the regulation of osmosensing, mechanotransduction, thermosensation, and epithelial/endothelial barrier functions. Whether TRPV4 is also mechanistically implicated in melanoma cell proliferation is not clear. Here, we hypothesized that TRPV4 is expressed in human melanoma and that pharmacological activation interferes with cell proliferation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: TRPV4 functions were studied in melanoma cell line

Copine-6 as a regulator of TRPM3 membrane trafficking and noxious heat sensation.

Noxious heat sensation involves multiple molecular receptors that operate under complex regulatory mechanisms. In a recent study, Gao, Yan, and colleagues identified Copine-6 as a calcium-sensitive phospholipid-binding protein that promotes TRPM3 trafficking to the plasma membrane in thermal sensory neurons and thereby enhances noxious heat sensitivity in mice. These findings expand current understanding of the mechanisms regulating thermal sensation.

TRPM8 Channels: Advances in Structural Studies and Pharmacological Modulation.

The transient receptor potential melastatin subtype 8 (TRPM8) is a cold sensor in humans, activated by low temperatures (>10, <28 °C), but also a polymodal ion channel, stimulated by voltage, pressure, cooling compounds (menthol, icilin), and hyperosmolarity. An increased number of experimental results indicate the implication of TRPM8 channels in cold thermal transduction and pain detection, transmission, and maintenance in different tissues and organs. These channels also have a repercussion on different kinds of life-threatening tumors and other pathologies, which include urinary and respir

Thermosensory Perceptual Learning Is Associated with Structural Brain Changes in Parietal-Opercular (SII) Cortex.

The location of a sensory cortex for temperature perception remains a topic of substantial debate. Both the parietal-opercular (SII) and posterior insula have been consistently implicated in thermosensory processing, but neither region has yet been identified as the locus of fine temperature discrimination. Using a perceptual learning paradigm in male and female humans, we show improvement in discrimination accuracy for subdegree changes in both warmth and cool detection over 5 d of repetitive training. We found that increases in discriminative accuracy were specific to the temperature (cold o

Acute superficial sensory neuropathy with generalized anhidrosis, anosmia, and ageusia.

We report a 53-year-old woman with an unusual presentation characterized by acute onset of generalized sensory symptoms associated with anhidrosis, anosmia, ageusia, and elevated titers of anti-GalNAc-GD1a antibodies. After intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, a remarkable improvement in the pain and temperature sensation was noted in her face, trunk, and extremities. The impaired pain and temperature sensation remained distributed along cranial and spinal dermatomes in a non-length-dependent manner, suggesting that the ganglionopathy affected small neurons.
