BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a metabolically challenging state with increased nutritional demand. Thiamine is an important cofactor in various metabolic pathways and thus its deficiency could have a serious impact on both maternal and fetal outcomes. Kashmir has thiamine deficiency in endemic proportions, with multiple reports of infantile beriberi, postpartum neuropathy, and gastric beriberi. This prompted us to assess the extent of the burden of thiamine deficiency during pregnancy.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted for a period of two years in pregnant women attending the anten…

Although obesity has been viewed traditionally as a disease of excess nutrition, evidence suggests that it may also be a disease of malnutrition. Specifically, thiamin deficiency was found in 15.5-29% of obese patients seeking bariatric surgery. It can present with vague signs and symptoms and is often overlooked in patients without alcohol use disorders. This review explores the relatively new discovery of high rates of thiamin deficiency in certain populations of people with obesity, including the effects of thiamin deficiency and potential underlying mechanisms of deficiency in people with

Thiamin plays a key role in the maintenance of brain function. Thiamin diphosphate is cofactor for several enzymes involved in glucose metabolism whereas thiamin triphosphate has distinct properties at the neuronal membrane. Thiamin metabolism in the brain is compartmented between neurons and neighbouring glial cells. Thiamin deficiency is commonly encountered in severe malnutrition associated with chronic alcoholism, HIV-AIDS and gastrointestinal disease where it frequently results in Wernicke's encephalopathy (the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome). Wernicke's encephalopathy is severely underdiagn

A thiamine (T) deficient state in rats was produced by feeding the rats a T deficient diet (TDD). At the stage of 13 days (TDD13 group), the number of red blood cells (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC), hematocrit (Ht) and hemoglobin (Hb) values decreased. On the other hand, after 30 days on the TDD (TDD30 group), the number of RBC was 819 x 10(4)/mm3 as against 631 x 10(4)/mm3 in the normal control group (NC group). Ht and Hb values also increased in the TDD30 group. These changes observed in the TDD30 group were significantly different from findings in the equal weight control group (EWC grou

A 48-year-old man was brought to our emergency room with acute abdominal pain and systemic edema, indicating acute circulatory failure with lactic acidosis. Furosemide treatment paradoxically worsened the systemic edema and induced confusion. He had no drinking history but hardly ate legumes or meats containing thiamine. Administration of fursultiamine dramatically improved the symptoms and subsequently caused pulmonary edema. Thiamine deficiency may occur in nondrinkers with an unbalanced diet. In this condition, diuretic therapy can worsen the symptoms before thiamine supplementation by prom…

Thiamine (vitamin B(1)) is an essential component of a number of metabolic pathways and thiamine deficiency results in a progressive encephalopathy in both humans and animals. Confirming thiamine deficiency is problematic and relies on demonstrating reduced red blood cells transketolase activity, or indirect methods including urinary organic acid analysis and dietary analysis. The characteristic and selective vulnerability of different brain regions in carnivores has been demonstrated by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the dog and cat as an aid to diagnosis. A 2-year-old, female, domestic s…

Thiamine deficiency is a well-known risk factor for the development of severe encephalopathy, such as Wernicke encephalopathy and Korsakoff syndrome, but the underlying mechanism is still mysterious. This study aims to investigate the expression levels of thiamine metabolism genes in different tissues and their impact on brain susceptibility to thiamine deficiency. The mRNA and protein levels of four genes known to be associated with thiamine metabolism: thiamine pyrophosphokinase-1 ( Tpk ), Solute carrier family 19 member 2 ( Slc19a2 ), Slc19a3 , and Slc25a19 , in the brain, kidney, and liver…
