Steroid therapy is commonly prescribed, although a variety of complications have been reported. Among such complications, spinal epidural lipomatosis is rare and difficult to diagnose before paraparesis occurs. The purpose of this report is to present a rare but catastrophic complication of steroid therapy. A 64-year-old woman undergoing long-term steroid therapy suffered from an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture and was unable to walk due to paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a D7 compression fracture and stored epidural adipose tissue between D5 and D8. Afte

STUDY DESIGN: The surface strain distribution on the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae during axial compressive loading was examined.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the general mechanical behavior of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae to evaluate their role in burst fractures.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Burst fractures are generally characterized by injury to the middle column and fracturing of the superior endplate. However, results in previous biomechanical investigations have not shown how these fractures are initiated during compression.
METHODS: Twenty-one thoracic and lumbar vertebrae (5 T10, 10

Study DesignRetrospective Cohort Study.ObjectivesSelecting the last substantially touched vertebra (LSTV) or the lastly touched vertebra (LTV) as the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) has been shown to prevent distal adding-on (DA) in Lenke 1A and 2A curves or Lenke 1B and 1C curves, respectively. However, DA was still observed in our cohort even when fusing at or distal to STV or LTV when undergoing thoracic curve fusion (TCF). The purposes of this study are (1) to identify factors associated with the occurrence of DA when LIV for TCF is at or distal to LTV/LSTV, and (2) to demonstrate the e

Caudal articular process (CAP) dysplasia is a congenital vertebral malformation that results from the failure of ossification center of articular process located in vertebrae, which includes aplasia or hypoplasia. In previous studies, it was reported to be common in small and chondrodystrophic dogs however, investigated in limited breeds. So we aimed to confirm the prevalence and the characteristics of CAP dysplasia in various breeds, and also to investigate the association of CAP dysplasia and spinal cord myelopathy in neurologically abnormal dogs. In this multicenter, retrospective study, th

Objective: A recent emphasis on nontraditional seating and omnidirectional impact directions has motivated the need for deformable representation of the thoracic spine (T-spine) in human body models. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a deformable T-spine for the Global Human Body Models Consortium (GHBMC) M50-O (average male occupant) human model and to demonstrate improved biofidelity. Methods: Eleven functional spinal units (FSUs) were developed with deformable vertebrae (cortical and trabecular), spinal and costovertebral ligaments, and intervertebral discs. OBJECT: There is limited data on the pullout strength of spinal fixation devices in the thoracic spine among individuals with different bone quality. An in vitro biomechanical study on the thoracic spine was performed to compare the pullout strength and the mechanism of failure of 4 posterior fixation thoracic constructs in relation to bone mineral density (BMD).
METHODS: A total of 80 vertebrae from 11 fresh-frozen thoracic spines (T2-12) were used. Based on the results from peripheral quantitative CT, specimens were divided into 2 groups (normal and osteopenic) according to their BMD. They

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disorder characterised by the calcification and ossification of ligaments and entheses. It is a frequent occurrence in elderly males, but rarely encountered in younger individuals.
CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old male was admitted to the hospital due to low back pain accompanied with numbness in both lower limbs for 10 d. Upon clinical examination and imaging tests, the patient was diagnosed with DISH with Scheuermann disease and thoracic spinal stenosis. Before the operation and medical treatment, the patient had hypoesthesia of th

The carina is considered a reliable marker for the depth of right internal jugular vein catheterization in infants on chest radiograph. In adult anatomy, the carina is typically located at the level of the fifth thoracic vertebra. We are not aware of a positional relationship between infant carina and thoracic vertebrae. Thus, we evaluated that a vertebral body may be at the same level as carina and can be as radiographic landmarks for the depth of right internal jugular vein catheterization in infants. In this retrospective analysis, 108 infants (aged 1-12 months) who underwent congenital hea…

Tumors of the scalp are characterized by a heterogeneous clinical spectrum with site-specific features. A wide variety of tumors that arise in the scalp include neoplasms, hamartomas, malformations, and both benign and malignant cysts. Most scalp tumors are benign (98-99%) with only an estimated 1-2% of diagnosed cases reported as being malignant. Of these, adnexal carcinoma is reported in less than 1% of cases. Herein, we report a 65-year-old woman who presented with pain and numbness in her hands with past medical history significant only for a chronic posterior head mass that had never rece

OBJECTIVES: People with cancer have a high risk of cachexia and sarcopenia, which are associated with worse clinical outcomes. We evaluated the prediction accuracy of the Matsuyama et al. and Ishida et al. formulas using computed tomography (CT) slices from the twelfth thoracic vertebra (Th12) level in people with cancer.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with advanced cancer who underwent thoracic and abdominal CT scans (n = 173). The cross-sectional area (CSA) on CT images was measured at the levels of Th12 and the third lumbar vertebra (L3). The Matsuyama et al. formula u

A vertebral body collapse of the first thoracic vertebra (T1) was diagnosed after radiological investigation in an adult male suffering for severe dorsal pain due to suspected multiple myeloma (MM). According to the principles of minimally invasive neurosurgery and the aesthetic needs of the patient, an open T1 kyphoplasty was performed by means of a right anterior approach through the inferior brow of the neck, generally utilized for the anterior approaches to the cervical spine. The histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of MM and the postoperative radiological investigation showed

We describe the concept of early functional treatment for patients with stable fractures of the lower thoracic and lumbar spine. Between 1983 and 1985, 102 patients treated in our department were mobilized after an average of 7 days in the three-point brace, which stabilizes the spine in the correct position. At the same time we begin with physiotherapy, which is continued after discharge from the clinic (after an average of 10 days). Our patients wear the brace for an average of 10 weeks. Moreover, 22 patients were mobilized early without a brace. On follow-up examination of 87 patients after

Impinging dorsal spinous processes (IDSP) are typically diagnosed and graded using radiography, during which the effect of the horses' thoracolumbar posture on the interspinous spaces is not commonly considered. Posture can be altered from a spontaneous, relatively extended, or lordotic, position by manual facilitation of thoracic flexion ('thoracic lift'). This study aimed to ascertain if the thoracic vertebral interspinous space distances were increased by using facilitated thoracic flexion to alter the posture in horses diagnosed with IDSP. Seven horses of mixed breed and sex, median age 9.

Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor (D-TSGCT) is a destructive benign tumor-like proliferative disease. Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumorrarely arises from the axial skeleton. We report a case of image findings of D-TSGCT in the thoracic vertebra. On fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) image, it presented a lytic bone destruction of 6th thoracic vertebra, vertebral processes as well as adjacent sixth rib with intense 18F-FDG uptake. Our case hints another unusual D-TSGCT image characteristic, which should be conside

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Pedicle screws are widely used in spinal surgeries. Pedicle screw fixation has shown better clinical effects than other techniques by providing steady fixation from the posterior arch to the vertebral body. However, there are several concerns about the impact of pedicle screw instrumentation insertion on vertebral development in young children, including early closure of the neurocentral cartilage (NCC). The effect of pedicle screw insertion in an early age on further growth of the upper thoracic spine is still unclear.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of p
