Autoimmune diseases comprise a group of about 85 heterogeneous conditions that can affect virtually any organ and tissue in the body. Many autoimmune diseases change significantly during pregnancy: some ameliorate, some worsen, and others are unaffected. Two autoimmune diseases present prominently in relation to pregnancy: postpartum autoimmune thyroiditis and autoimmune hypophysitis. This article will review the current state of knowledge of the immunological changes that occur during normal pregnancy, and will explore the striking temporal association with pregnancy observed in thyroiditis a

Mice of the C57Br strain, which are susceptible to the induction of autoimmune thyroiditis with mouse thyroglobulin, and C57Bl mice, which are resistant, were immunized with human and rabbit thyroglobulins in Freund's complete adjuvant. Susceptible strain C57Br developed higher degrees of thyroid infiltration than the resistant strain. The results indicate that the responses to xenogeneic (foreign) thyroglobulins parallel allogeneic and syngeneic (mouse) thyroglobulin. BSVS mice, which are highly susceptible to thyroiditis, were immunized with mouse thyroid extract from five different mouse st

We have taken advantage of GFP+ fluorescent protein (GFP) tagged lymphocytes to examine by-stander activity in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in the mouse. To generate GFP-positive EAT-susceptible CBA/J mice (H-2k) (GFP-CBA/J mice), we backcrossed CBA/J (H-2k) with heterozygous GFP+ transgenic mice (C57Bl/6; H-2b). I-Ak and GFP expression on peripheral lymphocytes was used to select the resulting progeny up to the N7 generation. Mixed lymphocyte reactions using spleen cells from N7 GFP-CBA/J mice showed negative responses to spleen cells from CBA/J confirming the inbreeding and with marke

Selenium and iodine are essential for thyroid hormone synthesis and function. Selenium, in form of selenocysteine, is found either in the catalytic center of enzymes involved in the protection of the thyroid gland from free radicals originating during thyroid hormone synthesis, and in three different iodothyronine deiodinases catalyzing the activation and the inactivation of thyroid hormones. Iodine is an essential constituent of thyroid hormones and its deficiency causes different disorders that include goiter, hypothyroidism, reduced fertility and alteration in growth, physical and neurologi

We report a case of severe hypothyroidism with nongoitrous, autoimmune thyroiditis and pituitary hyperplasia in a 13-year-old boy, who presented with sudden palsy on the left side of his face. Prednisolone and antiviral medication was administered. However, the facial palsy did not improve completely. The medications were replaced with thyroxine, and the facial palsy recovered. Endocrinological testing showed severe hypothyroidism as follows: thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level >100 µIU/mL, T4 of 1.04 µg/dL, T3 of 0.31 ng/mL, and free T4 of 0.07 ng/dL. Level of serum antithyroid peroxidase

We present a rare case of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) associated with autoimmune hypothyroidism in a child. The exact pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis remains unclear. Thyroxine replacement therapy along with steroids may lead to significant decrease in proteinuria and resolution of edema. Thyroid status should be evaluated in all cases with MPGN.

High-resolution ultrasonography of the thyroid gland is the major primarytechnical diagnostic procedure in suspected autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). A diffusely echo-poor thyroid is proof of the presence of AIT. Duplex sonography provides further information about the activity of the disease, and is of differential diagnostic importance for distinguishing postpartum thyroiditis from AIT, or for the investigation of an infiltrating carcinoma. Today, antibody determination serves merely to confirm the diagnosis, with TPO antibodies being the most specific for AIT. The TG antibodies may also be non

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is scleroderma-like disease without Raynaud's phenomenon or visceral involvement. It is characterized by painful swelling of the extremities, accompanied by rapid weight gain, fever and myalgia. The acute state of disease is associated with significant peripheral blood eosinophilia, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and hypergammaglobulinemia. EF is also frequently associated with hematological abnormalities, including malignant lymphoproliferative diseases, but rarely associated with autoimmune thyroiditis. In the present study we report a case of eosinoph

A variety of rheumatic manifestations have been described in association with autoimmune thyroiditis. In the past, most of these manifestations were attributed to the underlying thyroid dysfunction, in particular hypothyroidism. However, a responsibility of the mechanisms involved in the autoimmunity rather than a direct action of thyroid hormones seems supported by the evidences that some rheumatic manifestations may occur even in euthyroid patients, or that they are more frequent in hypothyroid patient with autoimmune thyroiditis than in those without this disease. Rheumatic manifestations c

Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland are among the most frequent endocrine disorders. The present study analyzes expression patterns of sialic acids in these diseases. Three lectins specific for sialic acids were used for the histochemical analysis of surgical specimens of the thyroid gland: Tritrichomonas mobilensis lectin that stains all types of sialic acids, Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin that stains sialic acids with alpha2,3 linkage and Sambucus nigra agglutinin that stains sialic acids with alpha2,6 linkage. In autoimmune thyroiditis, there was a significant increase in sialic ac

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe the clinical characteristics and long-term follow-up of a group of children with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty children (age: 11.9 +/- 2.7 years) were studied in a retrospective analysis.
RESULTS: At diagnosis, 34 of the children were hypothyroid (compensated hypothyroidism, n = 15; true hypothyroidism, n = 19) and 26 euthyroid. Thyroid ultrasonography showed characteristic features of heterogenicity and/or hypoechogenicity in all patients. Other autoimmune diseases were found in ten subjects (17%) and 23% had a fa

36 cases of autoimmune thyroiditis were studied by BUS, radioisotopic scan, laboratory test and cytological test, 20 patients were confirmed pathologically. Two cases were complicated with carcinoma. We analysed the causes of the misdiagnosis and considered the importance of TGAb and TMAb pasitive; cytological and pathological examinations are of key importance.

Organ specific autoimmune diseases do not occur isolated. In the authors group of 4509 patients with confirmed autoimmune thyroiditis the authors investigated the frequency of extrathyroid organ specific and non-specific autoantibodies. The objective was to draw attention to other autoimmune diseases which may not yet be clinically manifest. The mutual positivity of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and antibodies against the adrenals was: in the zona glomerulosa 21.1%, in the zona fasciculata 3.0%, in the zona reticularis 19.5%, in the adrenal medulla 9.0%. The mutual positivity of

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) are a heterogenous group of organ specific autoimmune diseases (AID) of the thyroid. Their pathogenesis is associated with predisposing, initiating and promoting factors. Morphogenesis is based on the hypersensitivity reaction of the immediate and delayed types with the development of acute or chronic immune inflammation in combination with atrophic and hyperplastic alterations of the parenchyma (reaction of neutralization and inactivation). AT can be subdivided into primary ones (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, chronic atrophic thyroiditis

Analysis of surgical treatment of 76 patients with Hashimoto's disease has shown that focal forms of disease are an absolute indication for operation: cancer was diagnosed in 6.6. per cent of patients in intraoperative verification. Progressive thyrotoxicosis or neck compression served as an indication in a diffuse form of lesion.

1. Large Thy1+, CD8+ immunoregulatory cells were found in the thymus of mice 9-16 days after injection of soluble mouse thyroglobulin (without adjuvant). 2. Similar immunoregulatory cells appeared in the spleen 14-21 days after antigen administration suggesting that they were generated in the thymus and later migrated to the spleen. 3. The immunoregulatory cells were antigen-specific and attached to cognate antigen. 4. The degree of inhibition by the immunoregulatory cells differed among various inbred strains of mice and were virtually absent from SJL mice. 5. The regulatory function of the c
