Identification and Distribution of Human-Biting Ticks in Northwestern Spain.

Ticks transmit a wide diversity of pathogens to a great variety of hosts, including humans. We conducted a tick surveillance study in northwestern Spain between 2014 and 2019. Ticks were removed from people and identified. Tick numbers, species, development stages, the timeline, seasonal and geographical distribution and epidemiological characteristics of people bitten by ticks were studied. We collected ticks from 8143 people. Nymphs of I. ricinus were the most frequently collected. Rhipicephalus bursa, R. sanguineus s.l., Hy. marginatum, Hy. lusitanicum, D. marginatus, D. reticulatus and H.

Penile cancer after a tick bite: A possible association.

Penile cancer is a rare cancer in Western countries, but is more common in parts of the developing world. Usually, it is associated with older uncircumcised men who have a long-term phymotic preputium. Here, we report a case of penile cancer in a circumcised patient, occurring 3 months after a tick bite on the head of the penis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that suggests a possible association between Lyme disease and occurrence of "de novo" penile cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Probable African Tick Bite Fever in the United States.

African tick bite fever (ATBF) is a tick-borne rickettsial disease most often observed in North American and European tourists returning home from the southern portion of Africa. Ticks infected with Rickettsia africae transmit this parasitic bacterium to humans, who subsequently develop an influenza-like illness, one or more inoculation eschars, and in some cases, a cutaneous rash. Because ATBF often presents with non-specific symptoms that suggest other infectious diseases, establishing the diagnosis may be difficult. Confirmatory assays, including serology and nucleic acid amplification, may

Alpha-gal allergy after a tick bite in Austria.

Tick bites can cause the alpha-gal syndrome, which is characterized by delayed anaphylactic reactions mainly to red meat and offal due to IgE antibodies against mammalian galactose-alpha-1.3-galactose carbohydrate (alpha-gal). Ixodes ricinus bites are considered the primary cause of IgE antibody responses specific for alpha-gal in Europe. This article reports on a 51-year-old Austrian male who acquired a tick bite in Austria in spring 2017, which, within 48 h, resulted in prolonged inflammation of the skin area around the bite. The patient experienced an allergic reaction 3 months later approx…

Azithromycin nanocrystals for dermal prevention of tick bite infections.

Azithromycin was optimized as nanocrystals with a drug content of 10.0 % (w/w) and a surfactant D-α -tocopheryl polyethylenglycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) content of 1.0 % (w/w) using bead milling for 10 min. The photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) diameter of the bulk population was 189 nm, laser diffraction (LD) diameter 90 % was 370 nm. Spherical morphology of the optimal nanocrystals was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). They were stable over 1 year of storage at 4 °C with the particle size within the nanometer range which was confirmed by PCS, LD and light microscope. An

Lyme borreliosis-from tick bite to diagnosis and treatment.

Lyme borreliosis is caused by certain genospecies of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, which are transmitted by hard ticks of the genus Ixodes. The most common clinical manifestation is erythema migrans, an expanding skin redness that usually develops at the site of a tick bite and eventually resolves even without antibiotic treatment. The infecting pathogens can spread to other tissues and organs, resulting in manifestations that can involve the nervous system, joints, heart and skin. Fatal outcome is extremely rare and is due to severe heart involvement; fetal involvement is not r

Dermoscopy for tick bite: reconfirmation of the usefulness for the initial diagnosis.

Ticks transmit a variety of infectious diseases. Diagnosis requires verification of a tick's presence. Here, we describe a 61-year-old woman bitten by an eight-legged nymphal Amblyomma testudinarium. We re-emphasize the usefulness of dermoscopy for identifying signs of the bite and determining the species of the biting tick.

What should one do in case of a tick bite?

Ixodes ricinus is the commonest tick species in Europe, and transmits Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, ri … d with the forceps. Antibiotic prophylactic therapy after a tick bite is not generally recommended. Tick bites can potentially be prevented by covering the body as much as possible or by applying repellents to the body and permethrin to clothes. Tick bite areas should be inspected for 1 month. Lyme borreliosis should be suspected when an erythema at the tick …

Detection of Rickettsia amblyommii in association with a tick bite rash.

In the summer of 2006, an Amblyomma americanum tick was removed from a woman in central North Carolina, who subsequently developed a rash at the site of tick attachment. When examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Borrelia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Rickettsia, and Bartonella DNA, only the Rickettsia primers generated an amplicon, which was identified as "R. amblyommii" by sequencing. To our knowledge, this is the first case in which R. amblyommii was temporally associated with a rash.

[Borrelia in ticks biting humans and prevention of Lyme borreliosis].

We examined by dark field microscopy 195 of 209 Ixodes ricinus ticks that were removed from humans in the Czech Republic (mainly in southern Moravia) during 1997-2001. The majority of the ticks were nymphs (62%), 31% were females and 7% larvae; 10.7% of the nymphs, 20.3% of the females but no larvae were found to be infected with B. burgdorferi s.l., the agent of Lyme borreliosis (LB). This observation supports for Central Europe the conclusions drawn from North America about nymphal ixodid ticks as the most important vector stage in transmission of LB. In the course of the year, we found the

Another traveler's tale: African tick-bite fever.

BACKGROUND: In the present report, we discuss the clinical and species-specific diagnosis of African tick-bite fever. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for fever, headache, and myalgia. The clinical examination yielded only two small purpuric lesions with a dark center on the thigh and the abdomen. The patient reported that he had just returned from a 10-day trip to the eastern region of South Africa, and that he had hiked through the bush in Eswatini 7 days before the onset of fever. The white blood cell count showed lymphopenia, and the C reactive protein and alan

A Case of Tick Bite Induced Babesiosis With Lyme Disease.

The Ixodes tick may transmit multiple pathogens, Lyme disease being the most common. Early detection of tick bites and using prophylaxis measures is the key to prevent tick bite-associated diseases like babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Lyme disease. It is recommended to follow preventive measures like using diethyltoluamide (DEET) on the skin, applying permethrin on clothes while visiting the tick-infested areas. Co-infection is an uncommon occurrence but still representative in endemic areas. If there is delayed initiation of therapy in these kinds of patients, there may be dire consequences tha…
