Comparison of the bacteriostatic effects, corneal cytotoxicity, and the ability to seal corneal incisions among three different tissue adhesives.

PURPOSE: To compare the bacteriostatic effects, corneal cytotoxicity, and ability to seal corneal incisions among fibrin glue and 2 commercially available cyanoacrylate derivatives: N-butyl cyanoacrylate and methoxypropyl cyanoacrylate. METHODS: The bacteriostatic activities of these tissue glues were verified by measuring the zones of bacterial growth inhibition surrounding the adhesive droplets on agar plates inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, or Mycobacterium chelonae. Corneal cytotoxicity was tested by a direct contac

Tissue-Adhesive, Antibacterial, and Antioxidant Hydrogel Sealant for Sealing Colorectal Anastomotic Leakage and Preventing Postoperative Adhesion.

Surgical treatment of colorectal diseases typically involves excising the diseased portion of the bowel and anastomosing the remaining sections to reestablish continuity. Surgical suturing has limitations in preventing anastomotic leakage and postoperative adhesion. To address these challenges, a tissue-adhesive, antibacterial, and antioxidant hydrogel is designed to cover and seal colorectal anastomotic wounds. The hydrogel is formed in situ by simply mixing oxidized hyaluronic acid, adipic acid dihydrazide-modified hyaluronic acid, ε-poly-l-lysine, and tannic acid. The hydrogel exhibits a ra

A Universal Polyelectrolyte-Locking Strategy: From Common Proteins to Stable Unfolded Protein-Based Adhesives for Rapid and Robust Tissue Sealing.

Marine protein adhesives present robust wet adhesion by mediating interfacial interactions through surface-exposed hydrophobic domains/adhesive groups and maintaining cohesive networks via intrinsically disordered protein structures. Replicating these capabilities in common protein systems remains challenging, especially in stabilizing hydrophobic residues at interface and improving cohesive properties. Here, we developed unfolded protein-based adhesives via a universal strategy of locking with polyelectrolytes that have flexible long chains and high charge density. These polyelectrolytes simu

Adhesion to a common ECM mediates interdependence in tissue morphogenesis in Drosophila.

Organ functionality requires the precise coordination of diverse tissues during development. Halfway through Drosophila embryogenesis, two lateral epidermal sheets stretch to fuse at the dorsal midline; concomitant with this, the main tubes of the respiratory system also shift dorsally. Here, we demonstrate that these processes occur simultaneously and are coordinated by the adhesion of the epidermal sheets and a subset of cells of the tracheal trunks to a common extracellular matrix (ECM) that separates them. We also show that during dorsal closure, tracheal trunk cells extend protrusions tow

Enhancing Aesthetic Outcomes Through Precise Application of Tissue Adhesive.

Wound closure is essential for faster healing and better aesthetics. Tissue adhesives offer an effective alternative to sutures, staples, and strips, as they are easy to apply, eliminate suture removal, and reduce inflammatory reactions. However, improper use can cause scarring, dehiscence, and delayed healing. This study evaluated a novel application method to enhance precision and improve healing. Over 2 years, a single surgeon used the cube technique on 190 patients: (1) wounds without tension (65%), (2) wounds with tension and good edge approximation (33.7%), and (3) wounds with tension bu

Cyanoacrylate Tissue Adhesive After Chest Tube Removal in Children.

Background: After open or thoracoscopic lung biopsy, it is common to leave a chest tube as a postoperative drain that is typically removed on the first or second postoperative day. Standard technique is to apply an occlusive dressing at the site of chest tube removal using gauze and some form of tape. Methods: We reviewed the charts of children who underwent thoracoscopic lung biopsy at our institution for the past 9 years, many of whom left the operating room with a chest tube. When the tube was removed, the site was dressed, based on attending surgeon preference, with either cyanoacrylate ti

Adhesive polyethylene glycol-based hydrogel patch for tissue repair.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based tissue glue has been widely used in surgery, but the sealants were weak in strength and could not be in place of sutures. This paper prepared a PEG-based tissue patch made of F127-DA hydrogel and PEG-DA as adhesive. For the patch adhesion on tissues, photoinitiator of lithium phenyl-2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylphosphinate (LAP, 0.1 % w/v) and UV flashlight at 395 nm for 30 s irradiation was used. The adhesion energy on pig skin, lung, heart, liver, kidney and stomach was 85.33, 56.40, 75.56, 70.22, 66.67 and 36.89 N/m, indicating the well stitching to different tissue

Temperature-responsive biodegradable injectable polymers with tissue adhesive properties.

Injectable polymers (IPs) exhibiting in situ hydrogel formation have attracted attention as vascular embolization and postoperative adhesion prevention materials. While utilizing hydrogels for such purposes, it is essential to ensure that they have appropriate and controllable tissue adhesion property, as it is crucial for them to not detach from their deposited location in the blood vessel or abdominal cavity. Additionally, it is important to maintain gel state in vivo for the desired period at such locations, where large amounts of body fluid exist. We had previously reported on a biodegrada

Mechanical characterization of a bifunctional Tetronic hydrogel adhesive for soft tissues.

Although a number of tissue adhesives and sealants for surgical use are currently available, attaining a useful balance in high strength, high compliance, and low swelling has proven difficult. Recent studies have demonstrated that a four-arm poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer, Tetronic, can be chemically modified to form a hydrogel tissue adhesive (Cho et al., Acta Biomater 2012;8:2223-2232; Barrett et al., Adv Health Mater 2012;1-11; Balakrishnan, Evaluating mechanical performance of hydrogel-based adhesives for soft tissue applications. Targeting ovarian tumor cell adhesion mediated by tissue transglutaminase.

Tissue transglutaminase (TG2) is a transpeptidase involved in protein cross-linking through generation of ε-(γ-glutamyl)lysine isopeptide bonds. It also promotes cell adhesion through interaction with fibronectin and facilitates formation of fibronectin-integrin complexes. This interaction is involved in tumor cell adhesion to the matrix and in the process of tumor dissemination. Its inhibition by small molecules may therefore be useful in blocking metastasis. To that end, we screened more than 800,000 compounds following an in silico docking approach targeting two distinct cavities in the vic

Wound modulation via sclerotherapy and tissue adhesion. Observations and discussion.

Fluid accumulation in a 'dead space' after surgery or trauma predisposes the area involved to delayed healing. The fluid may promote inflammatory mediators and other wound-modulating factors, which encourages the continued existence of the dead space. Tissue adhesion by means of agents such as tetracyclines has long been described. With this concept, tissue adhesion has been accomplished with varying success in diverse clinical situations involving non-healing wounds and prophylactically in seroma-prone areas. A total of 69 patients were treated and monitored. The most impressive response to t

Repair of a giant scleral ulcer with preserved sclera and tissue adhesive.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Infectious scleral ulcer is a rare but severe late complication of pterygium surgery. Scleral grafts may be required in scleral ectasia with uveal exposure, corneal distortion, and severe anterior chamber reaction that are induced by scleral ulcer. The authors report a method for scleral grafting with preserved sclera and tissue adhesive. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six cases of infectious scleral ulcers were repaired with this method. Preserved sclera was attached to the thinning sclera with tissue adhesive without sutures. The free or rotation conjunctival flap was place

Quinone-mediated, tissue-adaptive double-network hydrogel for instant hemostasis and wet-tissue adhesion.

Rapid control of bleeding in complex wounds remains a major clinical challenge. Here, we develop a tissue-adaptive double-network hydrogel that enables instant adhesion to wet tissue and rapid hemostasis. We show that the material can be applied either as an injectable sealant for confined sites or as a conformal patch for large defects. The hydrogel is formed from interpenetrating polymer networks dynamically crosslinked to provide mechanical toughness, rapid self-healing, and shear-thinning injectability. We demonstrate that partial oxidation of catechol groups generates reactive quinone spe

Cell-cell adhesion as a double-edged sword in tissue fluidity.

Cell migration plays a fundamental role in numerous physiological processes, including embryonic development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. While cell-cell adhesion is known to regulate motion by shaping cell morphology and intercellular force balance, its dynamic, rate-dependent contributions to tissue behavior remain poorly understood. In this study, we examine how the dissipative nature of cell-cell adhesion influences tissue dynamics and collective migration using an extended vertex model with explicit junctional viscosity. Our findings reveal a nontrivial interplay between two dis

A Hydrophilic Underwater Tissue Adhesive With Interfacial Conformity and Viscoelastic Displacement.

Adhesives that exhibit strong adhesion in wet and underwater environments are valuable in many biomedical applications. However, the presence of water substantially hinders contact between adhesives and substrates, leading to adhesion failure. In this study, a hydrophilic underwater adhesive (HUA) that can instantly adhere to wet and underwater tissues was constructed using a step-by-step photocrosslinking strategy to adjust hydrogel viscoelasticity. The HUA synergistically combined two core functional layers: adaptive fitting with interface morphology (i.e. "interface conformal") and the remo
