Tobacco smoking-related risk for iron deficiency anemia: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a significant public health problem. Tobacco smoking as a risk factor for anemia is often ignored. AIMS: To study the tobacco smoking-associated risk for IDA. UNLABELLED: This study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Dehradun, India from January 2019 to December 2020. One hundred ten patients having IDA (serum ferritin < 15 mcg/l) and an equal number of controls were randomly selected and assessed regarding their tobacco smoking status and type, quantity, and duration of tobacco used. RESULTS: Seventy-six (69.1%) patients with

Tobacco control policies and smoking cessation treatment utilization: A moderated mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco policies, including clean indoor air laws and cigarette taxes, increase smoking cessation in part by stimulating the use of cessation treatments. We explored whether the associations between tobacco policies and treatment use varies across sociodemographic groups. METHODS: We used data from 62,165 U.S. adult participants in the 2003 and 2010/11 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) who reported smoking cigarettes during the past-year. We built on prior structural equation models used to quantify the degree to which smoking cessation treatment us

Projected effects of tobacco smoking on worldwide tuberculosis control: mathematical modelling analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Almost 20% of people smoke tobacco worldwide--a percentage projected to rise in many poor countries. Smoking has been linked to … get to reduce tuberculosis mortality by half from 1990 to 2015. The model estimated that aggressive tobacco control (achieving a 1% decrease in smoking prevalence per year down to eradication) would avert 27 million smoking attributable deaths from tuberculosis by 2050. However, if the prevalence of smoking increased to 50% of adults (as observed in countries wit …

Success and challenges of tobacco control interventions among American Indians in California.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking and other forms of commercial tobacco use remain disproportionately high among American Indian communities compared with the general US population. Mainstream tobacco control strategies often have limited success in Tribal contexts, underscoring the need for culturally grounded interventions. METHODS: We conducted 30 key informant interviews with program staff and Tribal community members from 11 California Tribes participating in the California American Indian Tobacco Initiative. Interviews were conducted at two time points, transcribed, and analyzed using des…

Tobacco control policies and respiratory conditions among children presenting in primary care.

Tobacco control policies can protect child health. We hypothesised that the parallel introduction in 2008 of smoke-free restaurants and bars in the Netherlands, a tobacco tax increase and mass media campaign, would be associated with decreases in childhood wheezing/asthma, respiratory tract infections (RTIs), and otitis media with effusion (OME) presenting in primary care. We conducted an interrupted time series study using electronic medical records from the Dutch Integrated Primary Care Information database (2000-2016). We estimated step and slope changes in the incidence of each outcome wit…

Tobacco prevention and control interventions in humanitarian settings: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco has been a complex global problem that has adversely affected almost all the sectors of society. However, the ill-effects are often most reflected in humanitarian settings, which inadvertently are surmounted by fragile systems. We aim to map tobacco prevention and control intervention in humanitarian settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. A comprehensive search strategy was designed using Medical Subject Heading terms, subject experts and pertinent reviews. The search was conducted on Medline (throug

Link between childhood tobacco exposure and childhood psoriasis: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood psoriasis is not uncommon, and its prevalence is estimated to be 128 per 100,000 children. There are sparse data regarding intrauterine and environmental tobacco smoke exposure and the development of psoriasis in childhood. In this study, we aimed to investigate these parameters in the Turkish pediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 130 children with psoriasis and 390 children as controls. For each risk factor, odds ratios of psoriasis as an estimate of relative risks and corresponding 95% confidence interval were calculated. Univariate conditional log

Smoking cessation should have more emphasis within Tobacco Control? The case for.

Smoking cessation is usually mentioned last in the chain of established measures to improve Tobacco Control. This seems logical, as smoking cessation is a secondary or tertiary preventative measure only. In the recently proposed Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) using 6 Tobacco Control measures pricing is considered most important, and smoking cessation least important. For current smokers secondary or tertiary preventative measures are necessary with smoking cessation being the most effective one as its impact on health is immediate. Pricing, on the other hand, is less effective in inciting current…

Tobacco control and nicotine addiction in Canada: current trends, management and challenges.

Despite a significant decrease in tobacco use over the past four decades, cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death and disease in Canada. Nicotine addiction, unequal access to available support programs and gaps in continuity of health care are recognized as the main barriers to smoking cessation. To overcome these obstacles and to reach the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy goal of reducing smoking prevalence in Canada from 19% to 12% by 2011, several Canadian health care organizations developed extensive sets of recommendations. Improved access to affordable pharmacoth…

An analysis of tobacco industry marketing to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations: strategies for mainstream tobacco control and prevention.

Research on adult tobacco use consistently shows a higher prevalence among lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) populations than among the general population-reasons why are largely unknown, and counterstrategies are critical. Tobacco industry marketing, uncovered when the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) forced companies to share its internal documents, provided insight. The American Legacy Foundation uncovered the industry campaign Project SCUM (Sub-Culture Urban Marketing) aimed at gays and the homeless. The formerly secret documents revealed specific marketing toward LGBT, whose rates

Poor implementation of tobacco control measures and lack of education influences the intention to quit tobacco: a structural equation modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco consumption remains a public health issue and is one of the major causes of death in India. This study presents a validated conceptual model to assess the interaction between education, perceived application of tobacco control measures, type of tobacco and their effects on the intention to quit tobacco. Additionally, the direct and mediating roles of tobacco use -frequency, -duration, and -dependency on the intention to quit is also investigated. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out, and data from tobacco users of six randomly selected states in Ind…

Adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007: presence of a workplace policy on tobacco use in bars and restaurants in Nairobi, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive knowledge about effective tobacco control interventions, the prevalence of tobacco use in many middle- and low-income countries continues to rise. In these countries, public appreciation of levels of protection provided by laws and regulations on tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke is limited. After ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Kenya enacted the Tobacco Control Act, 2007, banning smoking in public places except in designated smoking areas. OBJECTIVE: To assess adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007 by determining the pr…
