Adie's syndrome comprises a tonic pupil, which may be associated with impairment of accommodation, in the presence of diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy with Adie's syndrome in which latent hypermetropia was made manifest by accommodative paresis and resulted in reversible amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Ross syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by tonic pupils, hyporeflexia, and segmental anhidrosis. We sought to characterize the clinical presentation, associated autoimmune disorders, and autonomic profile in patients with Ross syndrome to further elucidate its pathophysiology.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent a thermoregulatory sweat test (TST) between 1998 and 2020 and had confirmation of the diagnosis of Ross syndrome by an autonomic disorders specialist. Standardized autonomic reflex testing was reviewed when available.

Many nonvisual functions are regulated by light through a photoreceptive system involving melanopsin-expressing retinal ganglion cells that are maximally sensitive to blue light. Several studies have suggested that the ability of light to modulate circadian entrainment and to induce acute effects on melatonin secretion, subjective alertness, and gene expression decreases during aging, particularly for blue light. This could contribute to the documented changes in sleep and circadian regulatory processes with aging. However, age-related modification in the impact of light on steady-state pupil

Three patients with the sicca syndrome and chronic sensory neuropathy are described; in two of them neuropathy was the presenting feature of the disease. The sicca syndrome can give rise to a characteristic neurological syndrome comprising areflexia and asymmetrical sensory loss, particularly of proprioception, in the limbs. This is often associated with tonic pupils and trigeminal anaesthesia.

PURPOSE: To assist clinicians in the diagnosis and management of ocular siderosis.
METHODS: The diagnosis and management of three cases of ocular siderosis secondary to a retained iron-containing intraocular foreign body are described.
RESULTS: Noteworthy features included: 1) the characteristic features of a tonic or Adies pupil (one case) and 2) the failure of high-resolution computed tomography scanning and plain film radiography to detect the intraocular foreign body (two of three cases). In contrast, ultrasonography demonstrated the intraocular foreign bodies in all cases and accurately

An overview how to examine pupillary function and handle pupillary abnormalities is presented. The following issues are discussed: swinging flashlight test, clinical relevance of a relative afferent pupillary defect, anisocoria with normal light reaction, diagnosis and evaluation of Homer's syndrome, differential diagnosis of impaired light reaction, tonic pupil, third nerve palsy, supranuclear pupillary disorders, iris problems, systemic disease, measurement of sleepiness, and pupillography.

We present the case of a 43-year-old woman who presented with a localized area of anhidrosis on the upper left trunk and ipsilateral upper limb. It was associated with Adie's tonic pupil and an area of compensatory hyperhidrosis on the contralateral side. After 9 years of follow up, the alterations have remained stable. These alterations of the autonomous nervous system correspond to an incompletely expressed Ross syndrome.

In 1958 the triad of tonic pupils, areflexia (Holmes-Adie syndrome), and hypohidrosis was first described by Ross. Since then more than 15 patients with a similar condition have been described. Two cases with the typical triad in combination with associated autonomic dysfunctions are presented. Subjectively, the most disturbing symptom is segmental compensatory hyperhidrosis, which results from widespread hypohidrosis or anhidrosis. For treatment of hyperhidrosis, tap water iontophoresis was applied using a modified technique with special electrodes. In both patients the hyperhidrosis was reli…

Ross syndrome is characterized by a triad of tonic pupil, areflexia and segmental hypohidrosis. Hypohidrosis may be accompanied by contralateral hyperhidrosis, probably due to a compensatory mechanism. We report a case of Ross syndrome with socially disabling left-sided hyperhidrosis. Sympathectomy of the second and third thoracic ganglia was performed with satisfactory results. With excellent results in primary hyperhidrosis and very low morbidity, thoracic sympathectomy is the definitive treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Ross syndrome is a rare dysautonomia characterized by a clinical complex of segmental anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, areflexia, and tonic pupils. A very few cases (≃50) have been reported in literature since its original description in 1958. Here, we report the case of a middle-aged homemaker from Odisha, India, who presented with complaints of segmental hypohidrosis for the past 7 years.

BACKGROUND: Ross syndrome is an exceptionally rare disorder characterized by tonic pupils, areflexia, and anhidrosis, with a prevalence that appears to be higher in women than in men, typically presenting in individuals during their 30s. While Adie Syndrome closely mimics Ross syndrome, Adie syndrome lacks anhidrosis, making Ross syndrome clinically differentiable. This condition can manifest with a variety of symptoms, including cardiovascular anomalies attributable to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. We present the first case in the literature of COVID-19 being a potential trigger for R…

William John Adie was an Australian neurologist in the early 20th century responsible for extensively describing the tonically dilated pupil associated with absent deep tendon reflexes - both features of a syndrome that now bears his name. In addition to other neurological syndromes, he was also significant in delineating narcolepsy through his clinical essays and case series. His ophthalmic and neurologic contributions have served the test of time and played an important role in the modern understanding of Adie syndrome and narcolepsy. This report reviews Adie's medical contributions, extensi

Ross syndrome is a rare partial dysautonomic syndrome defined by the classic triad of segmental anhidrosis, Adie's tonic pupil and arreflexia. In addition to a secretory and protective function, the sweating is responsible for thermoregulation, which is necessary for maintaining body homeostasis, therefore hypohidrosis may compromise the ability of the person to work or exercise in any environmental conditions. We present a case of Ross Syndrome in a 38-year-old male with heat intolerance, which interfered with his daily work practice.

We report a case of Guillain Barré syndrome presenting with a unilateral internal ophthalmoplegia and unilateral minor sensory impairment, followed by respiratory failure, missing reflexes, tetraparesis and bilateral facial weakness. All symptoms responded to immunoglobulin. The diagnosis was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electroneurography. This case was especially unusual because the pupil abnormality was unilateral and appeared prior to motor impairment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The pupil, a dynamic ocular structure, serves as a critical indicator of neurological and ophthalmological function. This interdisciplinary review explores the anatomical, physiological, and pathological aspects of pupillary reflexes and disorders.
CONTENT: Emphasis is placed on the diagnostic relevance of light and accommodation reflexes, sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways, and the clinical implications of conditions such as Horner's syndrome, Adie's tonic pupil, and Argyll Robertson pupil. The utility of pharmacological testing and pupillometry in localizing les…
