Left atrial tumor thrombus with emboli to the brain and distal extremities: A case report.

Cardiac metastases are an uncommon phenomenon associated with neoplasms from a variety of primary sites. Pulmonary involvement often accompanies metastases involving the left atrium or ventricle and clinical presentation may be associated with stroke or emboli involving distal sites. We report a patient who presented acutely to the Emergency Department with symptoms of a cerebrovascular accident and bilateral cold pulseless lower extremities. Computerized Tomographic (CT) angiogram of the chest, abdomen, pelvis and lower extremities disclosed pulmonary veins with large filling defects in the r

Prevalence of synchronous bilateral/contralateral tonsil carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify the prevalence of synchronous contralateral tonsil carcinoma (SCTC) amongst patients with tonsil carcinoma or head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (HNSCCUP). Thirteen retrospective studies, comprising 2623 patients, were analysed, revealing an overall pooled SCTC prevalence of 4%, rising to 10% in HNSCCUP cases. HPV/p16 positivity was associated with SCTC prevalence of 3%, while HPV/p16 negativity was greater at 8%. Clinical or imaging evaluations often missed SCTC preoperatively, emphasising the import

Association between tonsillectomy and risk of oropharyngeal cancer: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have demonstrated that tonsillectomy may alter the risk of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). We systematically reviewed the evidence and pooled data to examine such an association. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched up to 25th April 2023. Studies reporting an association between tonsillectomy and oropharyngeal cancer risk at any site were included. RESULTS: Five studies were eligible. All examined the risk of tonsillar and base of the tongue (BOT) cancer with prior history of tonsillectomy. On meta-analysis of the data, prior history of tonsillectomy was associate

Healthcare resource utilization following unilateral versus bilateral radiation therapy for oropharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: To describe differences in healthcare resource utilization between patients treated with bilateral vs. unilateral neck radiation therapy (RT) for lateralized oropharyngeal cancer. METHODS: A propensity score matching strategy was used to identify two otherwise clinically similar cohorts of tonsillar cancer patients treated with either bilateral or unilateral neck RT. Cohorts were matched based on similar propensity scores for age, sex, ECOG performance status, pack-year smoking history, cT-category, cN-category, HPV-status, and use of concurrent chemotherapy. Short term (from start o

Hodgkin's disease primarily involving Waldeyer's ring. Case report and review of the literature.

We report a rare case of mixed cellularity Hodgkin's disease primarily involving Waldeyer's ring, which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and gene rearrangement studies. Our literature search revealed only 14 cases of this entity; six of these represented lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's disease not confirmed by immunohistochemistry and, thus, were possibly not truly Hodgkin's disease. Our case demonstrates the diagnostic difficulties in this rare entity and we recommend appropriate immunoperoxidase staining in atypical lymphoid proliferations involving otolaryngic mucosa-associated lympho

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration associated with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the tonsil.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a classical tumor-associated, immune-mediated disease typically associated with gynecological malignancies, small-cell lung-cancer or lymphoma. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 38-year old male with an over 12 months rapidly progressive cerebellar syndrome. Extensive diagnostic workup revealed selective hypermetabolism of the right tonsil in whole-body PET. Histological examination after tonsillectomy demonstrated a lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the tonsil and the tongue base strongly suggesting a paraneoplastic cause

Schwannoma of the palatine tonsil.

Schwannoma is a solitary, benign tumour arising from the neural sheath Schwann cells of the peripheral, cranial or autonomic nerves. In the head and neck region, it occurs most commonly in association with the acoustic nerve within the skull and is rarely found in oral structures. When it is found in oral structures, the tongue is reported to be the favoured site. Schwannoma of the tonsil is extremely rare, with only two cases reported in the literature. We report what is, to our knowledge, the third case of schwannoma of the tonsil, diagnosed by histopathology.

Association between tonsillectomy and oropharyngeal cancer risk: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective cohort study is to describe the association between the history of tonsillectomy and the risk of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSSC), using a large cohort of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study with 3620 patients diagnosed with OPٍSCC from 2010 to 2021. We utilized the University of Florida patients' registry i2b2 system. Three subsets of OPSSC were defined, base of tongue(BOT) cancer, tonsillar cancer, and other OPSSC. Tumor demographics and history of tonsillectomy were collected. Odds ratio for O

A Submucosal Tumor-like Lesion of the Cervical Esophagus Similar to the Tonsillar Structures of Waldeyer's Ring: A Case Report.

Esophageal submucosal tumors are rare, but their pathological types are diverse. In addition to the relatively common leiomyomas, some rare submucosal lesions are occasionally reported. Waldeyer's ring is described as a unique subtype of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, located in the naso-oropharynx. Studies have reported that Waldeyer's ring is the most common site of primary extranodal lymphoma in the head and neck. Interestingly, we encountered an esophageal submucosal tumor-like lesion similar to the tonsillar structures of Waldeyer's ring. A 38-year-old man underwent esophagoscopy afte

Primary Closure With Posteriorly Based Lateral Tongue Flap Reconstruction After Transoral Videolaryngoscopic Surgery for Tonsil Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Transoral surgery for head and neck cancer provides excellent oncologic outcomes while preserving speech and swallowing function. When neck dissection and resection of oropharynx are performed concomitantly, there is a risk of creating a communication defect or developing a pharyngocutaneous fistula. To prevent pharyngocutaneous fistula, we performed the reconstruction using a posteriorly based lateral tongue flap for communication defect. PATIENT: A 72-year-old male with oropharyngeal cancer (tonsil cancer) T2N1M0 underwent concomitant transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery and n

Abrupt tonsillar hemorrhage from a metastatic hemangiosarcoma of the breast: case report and literature review.

We describe a case of primary breast hemangiosarcoma with tonsillar metastasis that manifested as a profuse oropharyngeal hemorrhage. The patient was a 54-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with oral bleeding. A thorough examination revealed a distorted morphology of the left tonsil and a hemorrhage originating from it. Conservative methods to control the hemorrhage failed, and tonsillectomy was carried out. Histopathologic analysis revealed that the left tonsil contained hemangiosarcoma cells of the same kind that had been removed from the breast. Primary hemangiosarcoma
