BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common genetic human obesity syndrome and is characterized by hypotonia, endocrine disturbances, hyperphagia, obesity and mild mental retardation. Oral abnormalities, such as decreased salivary flow rates and extreme tooth wear, have also been described. Studies have shown a significant increase in reflux symptoms in individuals with obstuctive sleep apnoea syndrome and increased BMI, both of which are typical findings in PWS. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has been identified in some individuals with PWS and is a significant intrin…

The possible implications of variations in dental attrition patterns have necessitated a detailed assessment of the types, ranges, and causes of tooth wear. Hear we employ measurements of postcanine occlusal wear facets from a sample population of extant Australian aborigines. A principal components analysis was applied as a tool in determining common types of attritional patterns. It was concluded that the range of intrapopulational variation in dental wear patterns must be attributed to a multiplicity of sources in addition to such commonly cited causes as dietary variations, gender, age, an…

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear lesion, otherwise known as tooth surface loss, is an insidious cumulative and multifactorial condition causing irreversible destruction of tooth enamel and dentine. Over time this lesion can threaten the affected individual's Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). OHRQoL entails interaction among oral health systems: social factors, psychological factors, and the rest of the body. Though, previous studies done decades ago also reported a high prevalence of tooth wear among the elderly in Nigeria, before now there has been no study on the impact of tooth wear types…

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of tooth wear in posterior deciduous teeth of 100 subjects in the second phase of mixed dentition who were born in the 1950s (50sG) and 100 subjects born in the 1990s (90sG). The degree of abrasion for each posterior deciduous tooth was scored ranging from 0 to 3. The comparison of the degree of abrasion showed significant differences between the two groups for all examined teeth (upper and lower deciduous canines and first and second primary molars) all of which appeared to be more abraded in the 50sG. The findings of the present study indicate…

Increasing occlusal vertical dimension can be critical in the management of severely worn dentition, yet this approach remains controversial due to potential adverse effects. This article presents a comprehensive, digitally driven workflow that integrates aligner therapy to optimize both function and esthetics in an Angle class I patient with severe erosive wear. By leveraging orthodontic pre-alignment, minimally invasive restorative protocols, and advanced visualization tools, a predictable outcome was achieved in a complex full-mouth rehabilitation case.

INTRODUCTION: There is an increasing trend of malocclusion among children, so it is necessary to identify the cause of the tooth wear so that the orthodontist can treat the patient accordingly. It is necessary to determine the wear patterns of different malocclusions. Therefore, the aim of our study was to compare the patterns of tooth wear among two categories of Angle's class II malocclusions, i.e. class II division 1 and class II division 2.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 100 pretreatment orthodontic patients in the age group of 15-25 years with Angle's class II malocclusion…

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear, a prevalent multifactorial condition, causes oral issues and indirect systemic risks. However, validated animal models for its clinical pathogenic factors are lacking, hindering pathogenesis study and clinical translation. To fill this gap, this study aims to develop and validate an animal model replicating graded molar wear matching clinical features. By regulating mechanical friction duration and chemical erosion intensity, we’ll create a tool for preclinical multifactorial tooth wear research. METHODS: We simulated multifactorial dental tooth wear on the molars of Sp…

This case report illustrates a novel conservative restorative management of a patient with bulimia nervosa who presented with severe localized upper palatal tooth wear and an anterior reverse overjet. This was achieved by using a localized bite raising or supraoccluding appliance, cemented on the lingual side of the lower anterior teeth to create interocclusal space, obviating the need for tooth reduction of the eroded upper palatal and incisal tooth surfaces. Surgical crown lengthening was performed to create a better aesthetic gingival architecture. All-ceramic restorations were provided on …

UNLABELLED: The study evaluated if men and women with severe tooth wear were at increased risk of general bone loss. Enamel biopsies obtained from 50 subjects aged 47.5 ± 5 years showed decreased copper content, which was associated with reduced spine bone mineral density, suggesting deficits of this trace element contributing to bone demineralization, enamel attrition, and deteriorated quality of mineralized tissues.
INTRODUCTION: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess associations between enamel trace minerals and bone mineral density (BMD) in severe tooth wear. We hypoth…

From the asymptotic function, y = alpha + beta rho x, a computer program to describe growth was developed, using a series of iterative fittings to provide a progressively improved regression line and value for rho (the growth factor). The function was further developed to describe the entire process of tooth development from eruption and growth through to wear, incorporating both growth and wear factors in one relationship, y = alpha 1 + beta 1 rho x + gamma x. A 4 X 4 covariance matrix was evolved to suit this and a computer program developed to execute the curve fitting.
