Toothbrush contamination by toilet plumes: A comparative study in Chennai, India.

Oral health is vital to overall wellness, yet toothbrushes can harbor harmful microorganisms, especially in compromised individuals. Contamination occurs when microbes survive on surfaces such as "toilet plume" where bio-aerosols are released during flushing. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the microbial contamination of toothbrushes with and without lids, stored in different environments over a period of two months. Hence, we used data from equal student groups who used toothbrushes stored inside or outside bathrooms for this study. Samples from 36 used brushes were tested for Candida

Injury to the Temporal Lobe via Medial Transorbital Entry of a Toothbrush.

Objectives Intracranial penetration by foreign bodies entering via the orbit represent an unusual form of traumatic brain injury. Nevertheless, much is at stake with high risk for cranial nerve and neurovascular injury. We present a case where the bristled end of a toothbrush entered the brain as a projectile via the superior orbital fissure and discuss considerations for surgical management. Setting A 35-year-old woman suffered a periorbital injury after her husband threw an electric toothbrush at a wall and the head of the toothbrush became a missile that projected through her superior orbit

Driving toothbrush innovation through a cross-functional development team.

A cross-functional team was assembled to take on the project of developing a toothbrush that could deliver a "whole mouth clean." As such, this brush needed to not only demonstrate superior plaque removal from teeth, it also needed to provide a means for safe cleaning of soft oral tissues. During use, the brush needed to be comfortable both in hand and in mouth, and it required contemporary esthetics to help drive consumer acceptance. This article will take the reader through the full development cycle of the new toothbrush, identifying the proposed benefit of each brush feature along the way.

Prevalence of dental caries and toothbrushing habits among preschool children in Khartoum State, Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries in preschool children remains a major dental public health problem and affects significant numbers of children in developed and developing countries. The incidence is increasing in developing countries, such as Sudan, because of lifestyle changes, absence of oral health-preventive services and inadequate access to oral health care. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the prevalence of dental caries and toothbrushing habits among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Khartoum State, Sudan, and described the correlation between the mean decayed, missing and filled tooth (…

Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters related with presence of regular toothbrushing in hemodialysis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Regular toothbrushing (TB) has been shown to be related with better oral health. Studies have shown that various sociodemographic and clinical factors were related with regular TB in general population with normal renal function. However, no study had analyzed the factors related with regular TB in hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS: The laboratory parameters, depressive symptoms, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, and cognitive function were measured for all patients. Self-reported TB frequency was determined from all patients. RESULTS: The frequency of patients T…

Effect of follow-up intervention of toothbrushing on periodontal health in workplace dental examination.

This study examined the effect of follow-up intervention on periodontal health of workers on the basis of clinical assessment and a laboratory test. Toothbrushing instruction was given to 26 workers (41.4 +/- 7.8 yr of age). In the experimental group (EG), 13 workers received re-instruction and reminder messages after the initial intervention. The remaining 13 workers, who served as a control group (CG), underwent no follow-up. Brushing skill was assessed on the basis of plaque scores for the whole mouth (Plaque Control Record, PCR) and for eight representative teeth (Plaque Index, PLI). Perio…

Severe HELLP syndrome presenting with acute gum bleeding following toothbrushing at 38 weeks' gestation.

We describe a case of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP syndrome) at 38 weeks' gestation. This condition was diagnosed when the patient presented with acute, persistent gum bleeding after toothbrushing. Her platelet count was 26,000/mm3. Bleeding gums have rarely led to the diagnosis of this syndrome; this case appears to be the most severe description of this clinical presentation following toothbrushing yet presented in the literature. Although the patient had been hospitalized 48 hours earlier with nonspecific viral-like symptoms, she was discharged after being…

A Comparative Evaluation of Plaque Removal Efficacy of a Chewable Toothpaste Tablet with Conventional Toothpaste Using Conventional Toothbrush and Powered Toothbrush in Children of Age-group 8-12 Years.

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene is a crucial aspect of children's healthcare, and the effectiveness of plaque removal is one of the key indicators of good oral health. Traditional toothpaste and toothbrushes have been the cornerstone of oral hygiene practices; however, recent innovations like chewable toothpaste tablets offer a promising alternative. This study aims to compare the plaque removal efficacy and acceptance of a chewable toothpaste tablet with conventional toothpaste using both conventional and powered toothbrushes in children aged 8-12 years. By investigating the effectiveness, acceptabi

Effectiveness of virtual reality-based toothbrushing instruction on oral health outcomes: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases, significantly driven by dental plaque, remain a major global health concern. Traditional toothbrushing instruction (TBI) methods are often limited in interactivity and long-term skill retention. Recent digital innovations, particularly virtual reality (VR) offer highly interactive educational experiences. This randomized controlled trial (RCT), therefore, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of VR-based TBI compared to traditional instruction using plaque-disclosing agents. METHODS: This single-blind, two-arm RCT was conducted at a school of dentistry. Healthy adults …

Associations of self-reported toothbrushing frequency with salivary microbiome in caries, fluorosis, and healthy subjects.

Toothbrushing is a fundamental oral hygiene behavior associated with differences in the composition of salivary microbiome, yet whether its relationship with microbial profiles differs across oral conditions remains unclear. In this study, 300 participants were initially enrolled, including healthy controls and patients with dental caries or dental fluorosis (100 per group). After exclusion of one fluorosis sample that failed sequencing, 299 unstimulated saliva samples were analyzed. Based on questionnaire data, participants were classified as high-frequency (≥ 2 times/day) or low-frequency (<…
