The use of maxillary sinus dimensions in gender determination: a thin-slice multidetector computed tomography assisted morphometric study.

Gender determination is an important step in identification. For gender determination, anthropometric evaluation is one of the main forensic evaluations. In the present study, morphometric analysis of maxillary sinuses was performed to determine gender. For morphometric analysis, coronal and axial paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scan with 1-mm slice thickness was used. For this study, 140 subjects (70 women and 70 men) were enrolled (age ranged between 18 and 63). The size of each subject's maxillary sinuses was measured in anteroposterior, transverse, cephalocaudal, and volume direct

Arteriovenous malformation affecting the transverse dural venous sinus--an acquired lesion.

Dural arteriovenous malformations of the transverse sinus are relatively well localized to the occipitomastoid regions and occur predominantly in women who are more than 40 years of age. The signs and symptoms, except for pulsatile tinnitus, vary and apparently depend on the presence of impaired venous drainage, which may produce increased intracranial pressure, papilledema, and transient or persistent neurologic deficits. Eight of the 14 patients described had occlusion of one or both transverse or sigmoid sinuses. Two patients had angiographic demonstration of sigmoid or transverse sinus occ

Primary jugular foramen fibrous dysplasia: surgically nuanced video of extradural infratemporal transjugular approach. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia of the bone is a disease caused by a somatic GNAS mutation that affects craniofacial bones and can have a mass effect on different neurovascular structures. The authors present the first case of primary jugular foramen fibrous dysplasia with occlusion of the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. OBJECTIVE: A 33-year-old man presented with a history of dizziness and occasional dysphagia over the past year. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a uniform enhanced mass in the left jugular foramen, with complete blockage of the adjacent transverse and sigmoid sinuses. The comp

Aggregatibacter aphrophilus-associated Sphenoid Sinusitis Causing Orbital Cellulitis, Meningitis, and Venous Sinus Thrombosis.

We herein report an 81-year-old woman with no significant medical history who developed a fever, headache, and right eyelid swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed eye proptosis, sphenoid opacity, enlarged cavernous sinus, and dilated right superior ophthalmic vein (SOV). Subsequent enhanced MRI revealed intraventricular debris and thrombosis in the right SOV and the left transverse and sigmoid sinuses. Blood cultures were positive for Aggregatibacter aphrophilus, as identified by mass spectrometry. The patient responded well to antibiotics, anticoagulants, and surgical drainage of s

Endovascular Management of Intracranial Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas: Transarterial Approach.

In this second of 3 review articles on the endovascular management of intracranial dural AVFs, we discuss transarterial treatment approaches. The treatment goal is to occlude the fistulous point, including the most distal portion of the arterial supply together with the most proximal portion of the draining vein (ie, the "foot" of the vein), which can be accomplished with liquid embolic agents via transarterial access. Anatomic factors to consider when assessing the safety and efficacy of a transarterial approach using liquid embolic agents include location, angioarchitecture, and proximity of

Objective Pulse-Synchronous "Essential" Tinnitus due to Narrowing of the Transverse Dural Venous Sinus.

Subjective tinnitus is a common problem with many etiologies. Objective tinnitus, in which the sound is perceived by both the patient and the examiner, is less common. Objective tinnitus of the vascular type, in which a pulse synchronous bruit is heard by an independent observer, is frequently related to an underlying arterial or arteriovenous malformation, most commonly a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) involving the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. The remaining cases are usually termed "essential" vascular tinnitus, and are presumed to have a venous etiology. In these cases, the audible n

Venous sinus stenting for pulsatile tinnitus secondary to venous sinus stenosis: a dual-center retrospective cohort study.

Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) can emerge due to stenosis in the venous sinus, which leads to turbulent venous flows and increased pressures within the veins. Stenting of the venous sinus (VSS) is a potential intervention to relieve PT and is considered minimally invasive, as it restores proper venous flow. To evaluate the clinical, hemodynamic, and radiological outcomes of venous sinus stenting (VSS) in a real-world cohort of patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT) and venous sinus stenosis, and to describe the symptom-imaging-manometry framework used for procedural selection in routine practice. Assessment of a Transverse-Sigmoid Sinus Dural Arteriovenous Fistula using Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The most common symptoms of transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (TS-S DAVF) are pulsatile tinnitus and headache. The clinical characteristics lack specificity and may lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. The noninvasive and convenient nature of neurovascular ultrasound has made it an important screening tool for lesions. This paper reports the use of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography for the preoperative screening and postoperative follow-up of a patient diagnosed with a transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (TS-S DAVF). Stent Retriever and Aspiration Catheter Biopsy of an Intraluminal Transverse Sinus Meningioma: Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Intracranial intraluminal mass lesions are rare and challenging to biopsy using noninvasive methods. Obtaining tissue for diagnosis is critical for guiding treatment, yet traditional approaches such as craniotomy pose significant risks. In this case report, we describe the first use of an aspiration catheter and stent retrieval system to safely and successfully perform an endovascular biopsy in a patient with an exclusively intraluminal meningioma. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient had a history of medulloblastoma, which was resected and treated with craniospinal r

Postpartum superior sagittal, left transverse sinus and right internal jugular vein thrombosis with left parietal infarct: A case report.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rarely occurring condition. Pregnancy and postpartum are both known risk factors for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Early detection and treatment are critical, as CVST can be potentially life-threatening. Here, we present a case of a patient who developed left transverse and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis 15 days after normal vaginal delivery. The patient presented to the emergency department with complaints of irritability and an altered state of consciousness for two days. The patient also developed seizures extending from the lower limb to the up
