Erythema multiforme is an acute self-limited cutaneous syndrome associated in more than 50% of the cases with herpes simplex virus infection; but it can also be a consequence of other infectious agents or drugs. We report on a 24 year-old female patient with erythema multiforme secondary to Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes cutaneous infection acquired from contact with animals in a research laboratory.

The patient was a 13-year-old boy who was a member of the judo club at his junior high school. Approximately 1 week prior to his presentation, he developed multiple erythematous pilaris papules on his occipital area and was treated by a local doctor. A 49-year-old male with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia was seen at Bellevue Hospital in New York, N.Y. Sputum samples yielded cultures of Candida lusitaniae, Mycobacterium avium, and a filamentous fungus, Trichophyton fischeri.
