Trichuriasis is one of the most common soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, affecting populations globally. The condition is particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas with low levels of sanitation and poor living conditions. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of Trichuris trichiura infection in Asia at the country and region level. Multiple databases/academic search engines (Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar) were searched for literature on T. trichiura prevalence in Asia published through Ja…

Ascariasis and trichuriasis are highly prevalent parasitoses in tropical countries caused by Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura, respectively. Their prevalence is associated with poor sanitation and hygiene, among other biological and social factors. In this study, the associations of household social determinants with these soil-transmitted helminthiases in North Central Venezuela was assessed in the context of a National Study on Human Growth and Development (SENACREDH). This was a probabilistic, stratified, cross-sectional survey with a sample of 3388 individuals that weighted rep…

People infected by Trichuris trichiura were selected in a community by the Kato-Katz technique. The study included a universe of 376 persons, male and female, positive and asymptomatic, monoparasitic and multiparasitic. They were divided in treatment groups with not less than 50 people. Monoparasitic patients were treated with 500, 400 and 300 mg of mebendazole, and multiparasitic patients with 500 and 400 mg of mebendazole. In all the cases the drug was used in single doses and its administration was supervised by the physician. Therapeutical response in monoparasitic and multiparasitic patie

This article compares the results of two studies of Trichuris trichiura infection, one conducted in a children's home and the other in a village. In both, the intensity of infection of a cohort of children was determined by antihelminthic expulsion initially, and again after a period of re-infection. The cohort of village children showed a predisposition to a particular intensity of infection. An individual with a heavy infection initially was likely to re-acquire a heavier than average worm burden. No such correlation was observed for the cohort of institutionalized children. It is suggested

Despite significant advances in human health, soil-transmitted helminths (STH) continue to pose a major public health challenge, particularly in impoverished regions. Albendazole has been used to treat STH for over 40 years and remains widely utilized in mass drug administration programs. However, it is estimated that over 1.5 billion people are still infected globally, with Brazil reporting a prevalence of 5.41% for human trichuriasis. The nematode Trichuris muris is widely used in murine models to study trichuriasis due to its impact on the epithelial mucosa, including tissue damage, dysbios…

BACKGROUND: Infections with Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura remain significant contributors to the global burden of neglected tropical diseases. Infection may in particular affect child development as they are more likely to be infected with T. trichiura and/or A. lumbricoides and to carry higher worm burdens than adults. Whilst the impact of heavy infections are clear, the effects of moderate infection intensities on the growth and development of children remain elusive. Field studies are confounded by a lack of knowledge of infection history, nutritional status, presence of co-i

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, Trichuriasis and Hookworm infections poses a considerable public health burden in Sub-Saharan Africa, and a sound understanding of their spatial distribution facilitates to better target control interventions. This study, therefore, assessed the prevalence of the trio, and mapped their spatial distribution in the 20 administrative regions of Ogun State, Nigeria.
METHODS: Parasitological surveys were carried out in 1,499 households across 33 spatially selected communities. Fresh stool samples were collected from 1,027 consenting participants and processed using ether co…

A paleoparasitological study was carried out on 2 lead coffins recovered from the Roman site of Jaunay-Clan (near Poitiers, France). For the first time, this particular type of burial gave positive parasitological results, and eggs of the whipworm Trichuris trichiura were identified in 1 individual. In the present case, thanatomorphose associated with funerary practices may explain the scarcity of the recovered eggs. However, human whipworm has now been observed in 9 individuals dated to the Roman period. The very high frequency of Trichuris sp. eggs in Roman archaeological sites (up to 80%) s

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the comparative efficacy of 400 mg albendazole (Smith Kline Beecham) as a single dose and three brands of mebendazole … the percentage cure rates and egg reduction rates of the four treatment groups in the treatment of trichuriasis. Comparatively, high cure rate (89.8%) and egg reduction rate (99.1%) were observed in vermox (Janssen) treated group followed by Unibios (India) treated group (53.3% and 96.53% cure and egg reduction rates, respectively), whereas low cure rate (17. …

Eighty-nine patients infected with Entamoeba histolytica, non-pathogenic amoebae or Trichuris trichiura were studied prospectively to determine the safety and efficacy of diphetarsone therapy. An additional 75 patients were studied retrospectively to assess further the efficacy of diphetarsone in the treatment of E. histolytica cyst passers. Side effects were noted in 9% and included gastrointestinal upset, lightheadedness and headache. Transient liver function abnormalities were recorded in 5.6%. diphetarsone was completely effective in the treatment of Dientamoeba fragilis, Entamoeba hartman
