Trigeminocardiac reflex. A clinical phenomenon or a new physiological entity?

The trigemino-cardiac reflex (TCR) is defined as the sudden onset of parasympathetic dysrhythmia, sympathetic hypotension, apnea or gastric hypermotility during stimulation of any of the sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. The sensory nerve endings of the trigeminal nerve send neuronal signals via the Gasserian ganglion to the sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve, forming the afferent pathway of the reflex arc. This afferent pathway continues along the short internuncial nerve fibers in the reticular formatio to connect with the efferent pathway in the motor nucleus of the vagus nerve

Efferent and collateral organization of paratrigeminal nucleus projections: an anterograde and retrograde fluorescent tracer study in the rat.

The paratrigeminal nucleus (PTN) receives primary visceral afferent projections through cranial nerves IX and X and somatic afferent projections through cranial nerve V and dorsal roots as far caudally as C7. Pressure injections of the anterograde tracer tetramethylrhodamine dextran into the PTN in the rat resulted in bilateral labeling in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, and parabrachial nucleus. Anterograde labeling in the parabrachial nucleus was strongest in the external medial, external lateral, and ventral lateral subnuclei. Anterograde labe

Vibrissae tactile stimulation: (14C) 2-deoxyglucose uptake in rat brainstem, thalamus, and cortex.

The right mystacial vibrissae of awake, adult rats were stroked at 4-6 times/second and brain regions which increased (14C) 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) uptake were mapped autoradiographically. The ventral parts of the ipsilateral spinal trigeminal nuclei pars caudalis (Sp5c), pars interpolaris (Sp5i), pars oralis (Sp5o), and the principal trigeminal sensory (Pr5) nuclei were activated. The lateral part of the ipsilateral facial (VII) nucleus (the region which innervates the vibrissae muscles) was also activated possibly via excitatory, trigeminal (Sp5c, Sp5i, Sp5o, Pr5) sensory afferents. A number of

Evidence for cholinergic vagal afferents and vagal presynaptic M1 receptors in the ferret.

The distribution of muscarinic receptor binding was examined in the ferret brainstem vagal nuclei using the non-selective ligand [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate and the relatively M1 receptor-selective ligand [3H]pirenzepine. The highest density of receptor sites are found in the subnucleus gelatinosus and lower levels in the other subnuclei of the nucleus of the tractus solitarius and in the area postrema and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. Dense binding was also seen in the adjacent hypoglossal nucleus. Following unilateral cervical nodose ganglion excision binding in the subnucleus gel

Opioid-induced depression in the lamprey respiratory network.

The role of opioid receptors in modulating respiratory activity was investigated in in vitro brainstem preparations of adult lampreys by bath application of agonists and antagonists. The vagal motor output was used to monitor respiratory activity. Neuronal recordings were also performed to characterize the rostrolateral trigeminal region that has been suggested to be critical for respiratory rhythmogenesis. Microinjections of the micro-opioid receptor agonist [d-Ala(2), N-Me-Phe(4), Gly(5)-ol]-enkephalin (DAMGO) were also made into this region and at different locations within the brainstem. B

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of a chondrostean, the siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri).

All studies to date of cholinergic systems of bony fishes have been done in teleosts. To gain further insight into the evolution of the cholinergic systems of bony fishes, we have studied the brain of a chondrostean fish, the Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri, Brandt), by using an antibody against choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). This study showed the presence of ChAT-immunoreactive (ChAT-ir) neurons in the preoptic region (parvocellular and magnocellular preoptic nuclei and suprachiasmatic nucleus), the periventricular and tuberal hypothalamus, the saccus vasculosus, the dorsal thalamus, an

Spinal ascending pathways in amphibians: cells of origin and main targets.

As part of a research program on the evolution of somatosensory systems in vertebrates, the various components of ascending spinal projections were studied with in vivo and in vitro tract-tracing techniques in representative species of amphibians (the large green frog, Rana perezi, the clawed toad, Xenopus laevis and the ribbed newt, Pleurodeles waltl). Three main ascending sensory channels, each with largely separate targets, were demonstrated: 1. Ascending projections via the dorsal funiculus include primary and nonprimary projections that ascend to terminate mainly in the dorsal column nucl

Surgical Options for Atypical Facial Pain Syndromes.

Atypical neuropathic facial pain is a syndrome of intractable and unremitting facial pain that is secondary to nociceptive signaling in the trigeminal system. These syndromes are often recalcitrant to pharmacotherapy and other common interventions, including microvascular decompression and percutaneous procedures. Herein, the authors present two other viable approaches (nucleus caudalis dorsal root entry zone lesioning and motor cortex stimulation), their indications, and finally a possible treatment algorithm to consider when assessing patients with atypical facial pain.

Mapping the vocal circuitry of Alston's singing mouse with pseudorabies virus.

Vocalizations are often elaborate, rhythmically structured behaviors. Vocal motor patterns require close coordination of neural circuits governing the muscles of the larynx, jaw, and respiratory system. In the elaborate vocalization of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina) each note of its rapid, frequency-modulated trill is accompanied by equally rapid modulation of breath and gape. To elucidate the neural circuitry underlying this behavior, we introduced the polysynaptic retrograde neuronal tracer pseudorabies virus (PRV) into the cricothyroid and digastricus muscles, which control fre

Magnetic resonance imaging reveals neuronal degeneration in the brainstem of the superoxide dismutase 1 transgenic mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming the preferred neuroimaging modality for the diagnosis of human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A useful animal model of ALS is the superoxide dismutase 1G93A G1H transgenic mouse, which shows many of the clinico-pathological features of the human condition. We have employed a 4.7-Tesla MRI instrument to determine whether a noninvasive imaging approach can reveal pathological changes in the nervous system of this animal model. Our T2-weighted MRI revealed consistent changes in brain and brainstem of these mice. Hyperintensities, indicative of ne

[Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy with an antecedent infection: a case report].

Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy is a rare clinical manifestation, and its etiology remains obscure. Here, we report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with jaw deviation to the right. Neurological examination revealed atrophy of the right temporal and masseter muscles and jaw deviation to the right. Absence of other cranial nerve abnormalities, such as loss of sensation in the trigeminal nerve territory, suggested involvement of only the motor component of the right mandibular nerve. Results of laboratory tests, including hematologic, serologic, and biochemical analysis, were unrem

High-definition tDCS over primary motor cortex modulates brain signal variability and functional connectivity in episodic migraine.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) affects brain signal variability and functional connectivity in the trigeminal pain pathway, and their association with changes in migraine attacks. METHODS: Twenty-five episodic migraine patients were randomized for ten daily sessions of active or sham M1 HD-tDCS. Resting-state blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signal variability and seed-based functional connectivity were assessed pre- and post-treatment. A mediation analysis was performed to tes

Ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor alpha-immunoreactivity in the monkey central nervous system.

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) sustains the viability and phenotypic expression of a variety of neuronal populations in the central nervous system. Cranial and spinal motor neurons are particularly sensitive to the trophic effects of CNTF, and clinical trials are underway testing the potential therapeutic value of this trophic factor in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Yet, the distribution of the alpha subunit of the receptor for ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTFR alpha), which is essential for the trophic effects of CNTF to occur, is unknown in any primate species. SPARCL1-containing neurons in the human brainstem and sensory ganglion.

Secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine-like 1 (SPARCL1) is a member of the osteonectin family of proteins. In this study, immunohistochemistry for SPARCL1 was performed to obtain its distribution in the human brainstem, cervical spinal cord, and sensory ganglion. SPARCL1-immunoreactivity was detected in neuronal cell bodies including perikarya and proximal dendrites, and the neuropil. The motor nuclei of the IIIrd, Vth, VIth, VIIth, IXth, Xth, XIth, and XIIth cranial nerves and spinal nerves contained many SPARCL1-immunoreactive (-IR) neurons with medium-sized to large cell bodies. Autoradiographic localization of muscarinic cholinergic receptors in rat brainstem.

We have localized muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the rat brainstem by a light microscopic autoradiographic method. Initially, we examined the kinetics and specificity of the binding of radiolabeled quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) in slide-mounted, frozen tissue sections to determine that we were labeling the muscarinic cholinergic receptors as they had been described previously in biochemical pharmacological studies. Subsequently, using optimal binding parameters to obtain high specific to nonspecific ratios, we labeled tissue sections and generated autoradiograms by the apposition of e

Monitoring of facial muscle motor evoked potentials during microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: evidence of changes in motor neuron excitability.

OBJECT: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is thought to be due to a hyperactive facial motor nucleus consequent to chronic neurovascular contact. The lateral spread (LS) response is presumed to reflect changes in facial motor neuron excitability. Facial muscle motor evoked potentials (MEPs) use the same efferent pathway as LS, therefore the authors speculated that these potentials should reflect differences consistent with changes at the facial motor nucleus level. METHODS: Monitoring of LS and bilateral facial MEP was performed in 10 consecutive patients undergoing MVD for HFS. Ipsilateral facial MEPs

Nerve growth factor receptor (p75)-immunoreactivity in the normal adult feline trigeminal system and following retrogasserian rhizotomy.

The 75 kDa protein nerve growth factor receptor [NGFr(p75)] is a neurotrophin receptor that is able to bind different members of the neurotrophin family of molecules implicated in affecting neuronal survival. Here we describe the light microscopic distribution of NGFr(p75)-immunoreactivity (IR) within the feline trigeminal brainstem sensory nuclear complex and trigeminal ganglion of normal adult subjects and in subjects 10 and 30 days following retrogasserian rhizotomy. Within the trigeminal ganglion of normal subjects, numerous fibers and most of the neuronal cell bodies showed NGFr(p75)-IR t

Nitric oxide as an anterograde neurotransmitter in the trigeminal motor pool.

We demonstrate the presence of nitric oxide synthase containing fibers within the guinea pig trigeminal motor nucleus and describe the effects of nitric oxide (NO) on trigeminal motoneurons. Using immunohistochemical techniques, we observed nitrergic fibers displaying varicosities and giving rise to bouton-like structures in apposition to retrogradely labeled motoneuron processes, most of which were dendrites. NO-donors evoked a membrane depolarization (mean 7.5 mV) and a decrease in rheobase (mean 38%). These substances also evoked an apparent increase in an hyperpolarization-activated cation

Effect of dental malocclusion on cerebellar neuron activation via the dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus.

Occlusion has been proposed to play a role for body posture and balance, both of which are mediated mainly by the cerebellum. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) has direct projection to the cerebellum. The experimental unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) has an impact on the motor nuclei in the brain stem via trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vme). The current aim was to explore whether UAC has an impact on Vpdm-cerebellum circuit. The inferior alveolar nerve was injected into cholera toxin B subunit (CTb), the cerebellum was injected into fluoro-gold (FG),

Innervation of the syrinx of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

In songbirds, the learning and maintenance of song is dependent on auditory feedback, but little is known about the presence or role of other forms of sensory feedback. Here, we studied the innervation of the avian vocal organ, the syrinx, in the zebra finch. Using a combination of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and neural tracing with subunit B of cholera toxin (CTB), we analysed the peripheral and central endings of the branch of the hypoglossal nerve that supplies the syrinx, the tracheosyringeal nerve. In the syringeal muscles, we show the presence of numerous choline acetyl tran
