The interconversion of tritium labelled oestrone and oestradiol-17β has been investigated in human breast tumours maintained in organ culture for 3 days. Benign tumours were significantly different from scirrhous carcinomata both in the concentration of radioactivity taken up by the tissue and in the ratios of oestradiol-17β/oestrone achieved. The fact that malignant tumours were able to convert oestrone to oestradiol-17β is of interest in view of the relatively high plasma levels of oestrone in post-menopausal women.

Compound 48/80 evoked an increase in the spontaneous tritium release from cat cerebral arteries prelabelled with 3H-NA. This increase was abolished after cervical gangliectomy, external calcium removal or in the presence of colchicine. Cocaine brought about an enhancement in the release of radioactivity elicited by compound 48/80 while diphenhydramine did not affect it. These results suggest that compound 48/80 has an indirect adrenergic effect in cat cerebral arteries which is not mediated by the release of histamine from mast cells.

Platelet serotonin uptake was measured in 10 duodenal ulcer patients and 10 controls by determining the concentration of radioactivity in platelets after incubation with tritium-labelled serotonin binoxalate. Platelet 5-HT uptake in ulcer patients (312.0 +/- 125.0 CPM/10(7) platelets) was significantly higher than that in the control group (186.0 +/- 53.0 CPM/10(7) platelets; p < 0.01). Since the kinetics of 5-HT uptake by platelets may be a reflector of enhanced serotonergic activity, this finding may have implications in future therapeutic strategies for this disease.

A 28-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus and alcoholic hepatitis presented a rare case of Buschke Lowenstein tumor, or giant condyloma of vulva. HPV DNA of this tumor was detected by in situ hybridization using tritium labeled HPV 6 b, 16 and 18 DNA. This tumor appeared to harbour HPV 6 b DNA, but other HPV DNAs were negative. The distribution of HPV 6 b DNA was detected in the nucleus of the squamous epithelium showing koilocytosis. Total vulvectomy and resection of the clitoris were done. The postoperative course was uneventful and there has been no recurrence of tumor so far.
