[Results of 79 hepatic biopsies in untreated bacillary pleurs pulmonary tuberculosis patients].

The authors report 79 needle biopsies of the liver, using a Menghini needle, carried out as routine in untreated cases of pulmonary tuberculosis with positive sputum. Apart from the histological study, the authors carried out, in 30 cases, a bacteriological study of the liver fragment. The bacteriological and histological results are reported here in detail, then compared with those in the world literature. No significant correlation was found between the histological type of the suggestive hepatic lesions, e.g. follicular appearances or appearances of nodular küpferian hyperplasia and the rad

[Drug-induced hepatotoxicity caused by anti-tuberculosis drugs in tuberculosis patients complicated with chronic hepatitis].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate retrospectively the incidence of drug-induced hepatitis (DIH) caused by antituberculosis drugs including isoniazid (INH), rifampicin (RFP), with and without pyrazinamide (PZA), and to evaluate risk factors for DIH in tuberculosis patients complicated with chronic hepatitis (CH). MATERIALS: One hundred and seven tuberculosis patients with CH (M/F= 96/11, mean age +/- SE, 60.8 +/- 1.4 yr) admitted to our hospital during 1998-2006, whose laboratory data had been followed before and at least 2 months after starting antituberculosis chemotherapy, were enrolled in this st

Concurrent Hepatic Tuberculosis and Hepatic Graft-versus-host Disease in an Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Infection and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) are among the most common complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). With well-known risk factors including allogeneic HSCT and GVHD, tuberculosis (TB) has a higher incidence and shorter survival rate in HSCT recipients than in the general population. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old Indonesian female with a history of latent TB was found to have acute myeloid leukemia 3 months after allogeneic HSCT. She presented with fever, abdominal pain, and predominant cholestatic-type liver function tests derangement. Computed

Exploring the partial immunological mechanisms of hepatitis B virus reactivation in patients with hepatitis B and tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the immune changes caused by anti-tuberculosis treatment, especially the fluctuations of IFN-γ, and their role in HBV reactivation and related liver injury. METHOD: This was a retrospective study. Firstly, 162 patients with hepatitis B and tuberculosis co-infection (initial HBV-TB group) and 162 patients with simple hepatitis B infection (initial HBV group) who were hospitalized at the Third People's Hospital of Huizhou from June 2016 to September 2025 were consecutively included for preliminary comparison. Secondly, from the initial cohort, a baseline comparable subgrou

Rare and unusual case of hepatic and disseminated tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex disease (tuberculosis (TB)) of the liver is rare and liver abscesses as a result are even rarer. In an immunocompetent individual, the disease tends to be localised. To the best of our knowledge, we report one of the most severe TB involvements of the liver in an immunocompetent individual. A young woman with a history of previous TB infection, presented in septic shock. Scans showed a liver filled with possible abscesses, one of which was aspirated and confirmed TB. Multiple HIV tests were negative but she remained lymphopaenic. Although she improved substan

Fatal hepatic failure caused by miliary tuberculosis in a hemodialysis patient: case report.

A 57 year-old male dialysis patient died soon after the onset of high fever, hypoglycemia, and disturbance of consciousness. Autopsy revealed granulomatous lesions associated with caseous necrosis mainly found in the liver, despite the absence of pulmonary changes on chest radiographs performed during the patients illness. It appears that tubercle bacilli were hematogenously disseminated mainly to the liver causing miliary tuberculosis without producing typical diffuse lesions in the lungs. Since tuberculosis is a common complication in hemodialysis patients, the potential development of atypi

Hyaline splenic and hepatic plaques. Correlation with cirrhosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and asbestos exposure.

Nine hundred twenty-five unselected autopsies were investigated for the presence or absence of hyaline peritoneal (splenic or hepatic) plaques, hyaline pleural plaques, asbestos, liver cirrhosis, heart failure, previous peritoneal dialysis or abdominal surgery, chronic peritonitis, splenomegaly, splenic infarcts, and pulmonary or abdominal tuberculosis. Lung asbestos body concentrations were calculated in 570 subjects. Peritoneal plaques were recorded in 163 cases. In both univariate and multivariate analyses, they were associated with cirrhosis, pulmonary nonactive tuberculosis, pleural plaqu

Mycobacterium tuberculosis in hepatic hilum as a cause of erythema induratum of Bazin.

Erythema induratum of Bazin (EIB) is a rare manifestation of cutaneous tuberculosis, typically associated with active tuberculosis infections. We present the case of a 75-year-old immunocompetent Spanish woman who developed nodular lesions on her lower limbs. Initial differential diagnoses included sporotrichosis, erythema nodosum, Sweet's syndrome, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis. The cutaneous and hepatic hilum biopsy revealed necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis but only the last one tested positive for M. tuberculosis; no evidence of the pathogen was detected in the other clinical samples

A rare case of isolated macronodular hepatic tuberculosis (Tuberculous) in an immunocompetent patient.

Delirium, an acute confusional state characterized by decline in attention and cognition, is a common, life-threatening, but potentially preventable clinical syndrome among older persons. Deficits in cholinergic function have been postulated to cause delirium and cognitive decline. In particular, an imbalance between levels of acetylcholine and monoamine (such as dopamine) may cause delirium. We describe two cases of delirium in hospitalized older patients, supporting the "cholinergic deficiency hypothesis". In the first patient, hypo-reactive delirium developed a few hours after a dose of the

The nodular form of hepatic tuberculosis: a review with five additional new cases.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis presenting as an isolated liver tumour, without active pulmonary or miliary tuberculosis, or other clinical evidence of tuberculosis, is distinctly rare. A greater awareness of this rare clinical entity may prevent needless surgical intervention. AIMS: To help characterise this distinctly rare presentation of tuberculosis, five new cases are presented, together with a review of the world literature. The clinical, laboratory, radiological, and pathological features of these patients are described. METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay of the liver tissue was

Miliary hepatic tuberculosis not associated with splenic or lung involvement. A case report.

Miliary hepatic involvement is a frequent finding on autopsy in patients with disseminated tuberculosis. Imaging studies may reveal hepatosplenomegaly and/or parenchymal inhomogeneity and, in a minority of cases, focal lesions, invariably associated with miliary lung disease. An unusual case of disseminated tuberculosis with manifestations of miliary hepatic involvement, abdominal and neck lymphadenopathy on US and CT without any evidence of active disease in the lungs, spleen or other organ, is described.

Prevalence of hepatitis B and C at a major tuberculosis centre in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Denmark is a low-prevalence country for tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV) but the three diseases have similar sociodemographic risk factors. We estimated the prevalence and possible risk factors of HBV and HCV among TB-patients in a large TB clinic in Denmark. METHODS: All patients starting anti-TB-treatment at Copenhagen University Hospital, Herlev-Gentofte from April 1st 2018 through June 1st 2019 were included. Results from HBV and HCV testing as well as sociodemographic information were collected. Risk factor analyses were carried out using descriptiv

Predisposing factors in hepatitis induced by isoniazid-rifampin treatment of tuberculosis.

Seventy-five patients who developed mild hepatic reactions (serum transaminase concentrations of 45 to 149 units per liter) and 50 patients who showed more serious liver damage (serum transaminase values greater than 150 units per liter) were compared with 261 consecutive patients who had no liver reactions during treatment with rifampin and isoniazid. Generally, liver toxicity occurred in 18 per cent of patients receiving combined anti-tuberculous drug therapy. Small increases in transaminase occurred in 14 per cent of the patients; large increases occurred in 4 per cent. Elderly women compri

[The chronic hepatitis under pulmonary, extra-pulmonary and abdominal tuberculosis.].

The poly-morbidity is an actual problem of clinical medicine. The chronic hepatitis and tuberculosis are among widespread socially significant diseases while their relationship needs further investigation. The purpose of study is to analyze rate of occurrence, structure and clinic а chronic hepatitis taking course in comorbidity with tuberculosis of various localizations. The technique of continuous sampling was applied to carry out cohort randomized single-staged study analyzing rate structure and clinic of chronic hepatitis in 1189 patients with tuberculosis including pulmonary (n=1125), ext
