Vulval lymphoedema following pulmonary tuberculosis.

Acquired lymphoedema of the vulva is induced by impaired lymph flow. We present the case of a 35-year-old woman having lymphoedema of the vulva following pulmonary tuberculosis, which she had developed four years back for which she had taken a full course of antitubercular treatment for nine months from the Chest and Tuberculosis department. The biopsy taken from the perianal swellings showed hyperkeratosis and acanthosis with multiple dilated lymph specs.

Concurrent neurocysticercosis and pulmonary tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: We discuss the case of a 24-year-old male with severe racemose neurocysticercosis. CLINICAL FEATURES: The patient presented from an outside hospital with 4 months duration of intermittent syncope and a dull occipital headache with greatest severity in the morning. He was noted to have left facial numbness and blurred vision confined to his left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) discovered multiple grape-like cystic structures throughout the subarachnoid space and frontal parenchyma consistent with neurocysticercosis. Additional testing revealed radiologic and culture evidence o

[Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in childhood].

Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPT) accounts for around 25% of cases of the disease, and around 20% in children. In Pott's disease and other forms of bone and joint involvement (globally 10-15% of EPT cases), modern imaging techniques like MRI scan have improved diagnosis and follow-up of treatment outcomes. Tuberculous meningitis has not disappeared even in BCG vaccinated children and remains a severe form of the disease. Techniques like the polymerase chain reaction and MRI contribute to an early diagnosis and controversy persists regarding the role of corticosteroid therapy in the treatment

Radiological manifestations of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a common worldwide lung infection. The radiological features show considerable variation, but in most cases they are characteristic enough to suggest the diagnosis. Classically, tuberculosis is divided into primary, common in childhood, and postprimary, usually presenting in adults. The most characteristic radiological feature in primary tuberculosis is lymphadenopathy. On enhanced CT, hilar and mediastinal nodes with a central hypodense area suggest the diagnosis. Cavitation is the hallmark of postprimary tuberculosis and appears in around half of patients. Patc

Concomitant pulmonary tuberculosis and leprosy.

Concomitant tuberculosis and leprosy is uncommon, even in endemic countries. We report a patient with borderline lepromatous leprosy and type 1 reversal reaction initially diagnosed while the patient was undergoing treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. The diagnosis was on the basis of characteristic histopathology and Fite-Farraco stain.

Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in children.

METHODS: The clinical and epidemiological features of 102 children with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, diagnosed between 1982 and 1998 at P & A Kyriakou Children's Hospital were reviewed. RESULTS: During the past decade, a 50% increase of admissions for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis was observed. The source of infection was disclosed in 48 patients. Diagnoses included superficial lymphadenitis (n = 48), pleural effusion (n = 27), meningitis (n = 16), skeletal tuberculosis (n = 5), miliary tuberculosis (n = 3), abdominal tuberculosis (n = 2), and pericarditis (n = 1). Miliary tuberculosis develo

Radiologic manifestations of pulmonary tuberculosis.

In summary, the following points are reemphasized: 1. The chest film is the mainstay in the radiologic evaluation of suspected or proven pulmonary TB. CT is occasionally useful for clarifying confusing findings but has not been conclusively shown to have a significant impact on patient management. 2. Primary TB is increasingly a disease of adults. 3. Primary TB usually manifests as a parenchymal consolidation in any pulmonary lobe or segment. Distinguishing features from typical bacterial pneumonia include associated adenopathy, lack of systemic toxicity, failure to respond to conventional ant

Nocardia associated with pulmonary tuberculosis.

A total of 209 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were screened for the presence of Nocardia in their sputa. In 2.9 per cent of the cases Nocardia asteroides was isolated. The increasing importance of this microorganism has been discussed in the light of other reports from India.

Pancreatic steatorrhea and pulmonary tuberculosis.

The authors present a case of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in a 37 yr old woman treated for pulmonary tuberculosis. The exocrine pancreatic failure is suggested to be secondary to previous pancreatic tuberculosis since no other cause of pancreatic disease was found and the diarrhea with steatorrhea started 6 mth after the lung disease. Steatorrhea was promptly reverted after institution of oral therapy with pancreatic supplements and the patient gained 7 kg of body weight during the successive follow-up of 4 yr.

Changing patterns in pulmonary tuberculosis.

We reviewed the initial chest roentgenograms of 182 consecutive adult patients with proven active tuberculosis. Less than 50% of all cases were known or suspected at the time of initial presentation. There is a low degree of correlation between radiologically discernible active pulmonary tuberculosis and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. A high percentage of cases represent uncommon pulmonary locations. We present the frequency of occurrence of four common pulmonary patterns.

Genital manifestation of pulmonary tuberculosis.

We studied 200 women with pulmonary tuberculosis to check for genital lesions: 13% of these women had genital tuberculosis. As clinical diagnosis was not possible, we relied on meticulous and repeated histopathologic studies. The occurrence of genital tuberculosis was more frequent in women who had pulmonary tuberculosis of shorter duration, but was not related to the severity of the disease. Pulmonary tuberculosis indirectly affects the female genital tract in almost all cases, giving rise to various gynecologic symptoms and signs. A review of the literature and further discussion about this
