INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 50% or more of skeletal tuberculosis. MRI is a helpful tool for spinal TB. MR findings in spinal TB however, may have several different patterns.
METHODS: The MRI features of spinal TB and classification as usual and unusual findings are reported. The MR images in 52 proven spinal TB patients in Srinagarind Hospital from 1996 to 2005 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: There were five characteristics of unusual manifestations, including multiple skip lesions, vertebral body involvement, lamina and spinous process involvement, single ver

Spinal tuberculosis is the most common cause of severe kyphosis in many parts of the world. Three percent of patients treated conservatively end up with a deformity greater than 60 degrees which can cause serious cosmetic, psychological, cardio-respiratory and neurological problems. Severe kyphotic deformities are usually the result of childhood spinal deformities and 'Spine at risk' radiological signs are helpful to identify children at risk of deformity. In children, a severe type of collapse, termed as 'Buckling Collapse' is also noted where the kyphosis is more than 120 degrees. Risk facto

This study investigated the diagnostic significance of urinary deoxypyridinoline measurement as a screening tool for spinal tuberculosis in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.Urinary deoxypyridinoline levels were measured by automated chemiluminescence immunoassay and automated chemistry methods in patients with spinal (n=33) and pulmonary tuberculosis (n=33) and in healthy controls (n=30). Urinary deoxypyridinoline was divided by urinary creatine to exclude the factors of body mass index and urine dilution. The results underwent validity analysis. The measurements of urinary deoxypyridinoli

OBJECTIVE: To explore the surgical measurements and principles in the treatment of thoracic and thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis.
METHODS: From 2001 to 2008, 232 cases of thoracic or thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis were treated by operations in the study, including 148 males and 84 females with an average age of 37.8 years ranging from 20 to 76 years. Preoperative assessment displayed as follow: Cobb angles of kyphosis < 30 degrees in 65 cases, 30 degrees to 60 degrees in 147 cases, > 60 degrees in 20 cases; Frankel B grade in 13 cases, C in 12 cases, D in 41 cases, E in 166 cases. We prospectively followed 61 children under 15 years of age at the time of diagnosis to identify the risk factors for deformity progression. The children had 63 lesions and a minimum of 15 years followup. All exhibited an increase in deformity during the active disease phase, but 26 of 63 (41%) continued to progress during the quiescent phase until the growth was complete. In 21 of those 26, there was an increase in angular kyphosis with a final deformity < 90 degrees. In the other five, the deformity resembled a buckling collapse analogous to failure of an axially loaded slender column; the d

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a necrotizing bacterial infection with protean manifestation and wide distribution. There has been a great fall in the prevalence of tuberculosis in the United States since 1990, although the impact of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has increased the resurgence of tuberculosis (TB). Spinal tuberculosis is the commonest form of skeletal tuberculosis. In this article, an overview of spinal tuberculosis and the personal experience of 19 children with spinal tuberculosis are presented. All the children required surgical intervention, because they manifested n

A review of 21 cases of patients with spinal tuberculosis has been performed, with special attention being paid to methods of diagnosis and the surgical treatment undertaken. We found that the clinical presentation of the condition was often similar to that of malignant disease within the spine, with the commonest presenting features being back pain (95%), an evaluated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (100%) and neurological deficits (47%). The radiological appearances were diagnostic of spinal tuberculosis in less than 50% of cases. Microbiological confirmation of the diagnosis was possib

This paper describes a case of spinal tuberculosis diagnosed at 29 weeks' gestation in a primigravid Indian woman. The report illustrates the primary problems in suspecting disease, recognizing the diverse clinical presentations and initiating investigations to confirm the diagnosis. In most cases, M. tuberculosis, once recognized and appropriately treated, should result in an excellent prognosis.

From 1975 through 1989, retrospective study of 155 patients with spinal tuberculosis was carried out at Ramathibodi Hospital to study predisposing factors to neural deficit and results of treatment. Two groups of patients who had no neural deficit and had neural deficit were compared. Clinical characteristics of the patients between the two study groups were similar with regard to sex, duration of symptoms, number of vertebrae involved, angle of gibbus deformity and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. There were statistical differences in age, cephalad level of infection, loss of vertebral body an

Computerised axial tomography of the spine has been carried out in 56 patients with spinal tuberculosis; the extent of the bone and soft tissue involvement, spinal canal encroachment and neural compression were demonstrated. This accurate information made it possible to lay down guide lines for conservative and surgical management.

We present a case of a Philippine woman in her late twenties, diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis after surgical intervention due to medullary compression. The diagnosis was preceded by four months of unexplained back pain. Differential diagnoses included ulcer, liver-gallbladder disease, musculoskeletal causes, and cancer. This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis as a differential diagnosis in patients from high-endemic areas to avoid diagnostic delay and the risk of disease progression.

A case of cervico thoracic junctional area spinal tuberculosis presenting as painful radiculitis of the upper extremity is reported. The predominant symptom of radicular pain and muscle weakness in the hand, along with a claw deformity, led to considerable delay in diagnosis. The presence of advanced bone destruction with severe instability was demonstrated on the MRI scan done later. Surgical management by radical anterior debridement and fusion, along with chemotherapy, led to resolution of the upper extremity symptoms. The brachial plexus radiculopathy secondary to tuberculosis has not been

We report a series of 10 cases of centrosomatic tuberculosis of the spine. The mean age of the patients was 36 years. Plain x-rays of the spine showed isolated defects in 3 cases, a defect with wedge fracture in 3 and a wedge fracture alone in 2. A sequestrum was found in 2 cases and bony condensation around the defect in 6. A CT scan performed in 3 cases showed, in addition to the bone lesions, a perilesional bony condensation in all cases. Soft tissue abscess formation was noted in 1 case and epidural involvement in the 2 others. MRI performed in 2 cases evidenced an alteration of the verteb

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and nerve function in patients with spinal tuberculosis before and after surgery, explore the timing of surgical intervention, and evaluate its influence on surgical safety.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 387 patients with spinal tuberculosis who received surgical treatment from March 2012 to March 2017, including 278 males and 109 females, aged 12 to 86 years old with an average of (49.9±19.1) years. There were 64 cases of cervical tuberculosis, 86 cases of thoracic tubercu
