Ultrastructure of Pericystic or Intracystic Blood Vessels in Epidermoid Cysts-A Transmission Electron Microscopy Study: Laboratory Investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, we reported a tendency toward spontaneous hemorrhage in both the preoperative and postoperative periods in patients with intracranial epidermoid cyst (EC). According to our experience, this tendency for spontaneous hemorrhage was partly caused by the pathologic blood vessels adjacent to the EC. This study was designed to testify this hypothesis. METHODS: Twenty-three removable pericystic or intracystic blood vessels from 17 patients with EC were collected during surgery and were then examined by transmission electron microscopy. The microvascular structure in gliomas was

Comparative analysis of the hydrogen sulphide pathway in internal thoracic artery and radial artery.

OBJECTIVES: The molecular basis supporting the superiority of the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) as a bypass conduit is limited. This … e cystathionine β-synthase in the LITA than in the RA (P = 0.006). This protein was present in both tunica intima and tunica media of the LITA, although it was present only in the tunica media of the RA. Localization patterns of the other 2 enzymes were not different between LITA and RA. CONCLUSIONS: Expression levels of the mRNA and protein of cystathionine β …

Sudden unexpected death due to coronary thrombosis associated with isolated necrotizing vasculitis in the coronary arteries of a young adult.

Coronary arteritis is an uncommon cause of sudden death in non-atherosclerotic coronary diseases, and is mostly associated with systemic vasculitis or systemic autoimmune diseases; therefore, sudden death due to isolated coronary arteritis rarely occurs. The case described in this report is that of a 34-year-old man with no significant personal medical history who died suddenly after presenting with nausea. Postmortem examination revealed a significant infiltration of lymphocytes predominantly on the adventitia and periadventitial tissues of the coronary arteries in the epicardium. The lymphoc

Combining carotid intima-media thickness with carotid plaque on screening for coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-detected carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaque are possible screening tests for coronary heart disease (CHD) among asymptomatic individuals. OBJECTIVE: To assess the increase in screening performance of combining carotid IMT and plaque compared with each measurement alone in the identification of individuals with CHD. METHODS: Ultrasound examination of left and right carotid arteries was performed on 100 individuals (median age 57), 55 with a history of CHD (unstable angina or myocardial infarction) and 45 without. IMT measurements were taken f

[Carotid artery disease and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection].

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection provides patients an increased vascular risk, related to traditional vascular risk factors and metabolic and vascular disease induced by antiretroviral treatment and HIV infection itself. METHODS: By reviewing current literature, this article analyses meaning and measurement of subclinical atherosclerosis in general population; factors inducing vascular risk in HIV infected patients; and published evidence about subclinical atherosclerosis in this population. RESULTS: Carotid ultrasound measurement of carotid intimamedia thickness an

Takayasu's arteritis mimicking aortic intramural hematoma in a female patient with chest pain.

We report the case of a young female patient who presented with chest pain, having a background of systemic complaints and a history of essential thrombocytosis. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was suggestive of an intramural hematoma of the distal ascending aorta and transverse arch, confirming computed tomography findings. However, surgery revealed only diffuse aortic wall thickening without hematoma or dissection, despite an epiaortic ultrasonogram corroborating the TEE findings. Histopathology demonstrated inflammation involving all layers of the aortic wall, with intimal fibrosis,

Expression of subclinical atherosclerosis for different cardiovascular risk factors in young populations.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is considered an early marker for atherosclerosis, but there are few studies on the expression of this marker in younger populations. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cIMT in younge patients (aged 30-50 years) and its expression according to cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: We analyzed individuals admitted for an invasive cardiac procedure. Normal cIMT was defined as < 0.90 mm, thickened as 0.90-1.50 mm and atherosclerotic plaque as > 1.50 mm. Lipid profile, anthropometric parameters, fasting blood glucose and estimated GFR were also determined

Flow-mediated vasodilation and carotid intima-media thickness in systemic sclerosis.

Increased evidence suggests an accelerated macrovascular disease in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) are two indicators of subclinic cardiovascular disease and are frequently used as surrogate measures of subclinic atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate macrovascular involvement in SSc. We studied 35 SSc patients (6 males and 29 females; 11 with diffuse and 24 with limited disease) and 20 healthy controls. Brachial artery FMD was assessed by method described by Celermajer in all patients and 13 c

Increased carotid intima-media thickness in the absence of atherosclerotic plaques in an adult population with Fabry disease.

AIM: Fabry disease is considered primarily as a progressive small vessel disease, with ischaemic degenerative lesions involving the kidneys, brain and heart. Macrovascular involvement in male patients includes an accelerated wall hypertrophy of the radial artery and a thickening of the intima-media of the common carotid artery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and severity of carotid artery atherosclerosis in hemizygous and heterozygous patients with Fabry disease, compared with a matched control population. METHODS: The common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) of

Asymptomatic carotid occlusion in a young HIV-infected patient receiving HAART.

The discovery of an asymptomatic and spontaneous internal carotid occlusion in a young HIV-infected patient, without atherosclerosis, asks the question of cardio-vascular disease's mechanism. A pro-atherogenic profile HAART-associated does not fully explain the high cardio-vascular disease's incidence among the HIV infected population. Carotid stenosis and/or thrombophilic conditions are emergent problems among HIV-infected persons.

Intraoperative Arterial Biopsy in Incident Hemodialysis Patients: Differences Observed.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial calcification (AC) is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients that starts to develop before these patients need renal replacement therapy. In these patients, calcification can involve tunica intima or tunica media. This study has looked for the prevalence, severity, and distribution of arterial wall calcification in incident hemodialysis patients through intraoperative arterial biopsy obtained during creation of arteriovenous vascular access for hemodialysis. METHODOLOGY: One hundred and seventy-two stage 5 CKD adults (98 male and 74 female) were …

Follow up of intima-media thickness after severe early-onset preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: Early-onset preeclampsia is associated with premature cardiovascular disease. We previously demonstrated that femoral intima-media thickness (IMT) and markers of cardiovascular disease were increased in women 1 year after early-onset preeclampsia. The current study measured (progression of) IMT, cardiovascular disease risk factors and markers of endothelial cell dysfunction 4-5 years postpartum in the same women. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. POPULATION: Formerly preeclamptic women. METHODS: IMT of carotid and femoral arteries was measured by ultrasound, as a marker of subcli

Development of a Novel Hierarchically Biofabricated Blood Vessel Mimic Decorated with Three Vascular Cell Populations for the Reconstruction of Small-Diameter Arteries.

The availability of grafts to replace small-diameter arteries remains an unmet clinical need. Here, the validated methodology is reported for a novel hybrid tissue-engineered vascular graft that aims to match the natural structure of small-size arteries. The blood vessel mimic (BVM) comprises an internal conduit of co-electrospun gelatin and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers (corresponding to the tunica intima of an artery), reinforced by an additional layer of PCL aligned fibers (the internal elastic membrane). Endothelial cells are deposited onto the luminal surface using a rotative bioreact…

Sudden death due to coronary artery dissection associated with fibromuscular dysplasia revealed by postmortem selective computed tomography coronary angiography: A case report.

We present an autopsy case of sudden death due to coronary artery dissection associated with fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) in a young female patient. Postmortem selective coronary artery computed tomography (CT) angiography revealed dissections of the left anterior descending and left circumflex arteries. These findings were confirmed by subsequent autopsy. Histopathological examination revealed coronary artery FMD, which is considered a risk factor for dissection. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first postmortem radiology-pathology correlation of coronary artery dissection associate

Albuminuria and sodiuria in IUGR children.

OBJECTIVE: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with hyperfiltration, glomerulosclerosis and albuminuria. Albuminuria may further lead to tubulointerstitial inflammation, fibrosis and tubular atrophy. The time at which this may occur is unknown. This study was designed to assess the relationship between glomerular and tubular damage in IUGR children. METHODS: We enrolled 50 children, 25 IUGR, categorized by estimated fetal weight <10th percentile and umbilical artery pulsatility index >2 SD, and 25 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) controls at 18 months of age. We compared

Assessment of atherosclerotic arterial changes in the carotid artery with noninvasive ultrasound.

Atherosclerotic changes of the carotid tree comprise changes of the wall structure, the wall stiffness, and local blood flow properties. They are associated with atherosclerotic changes in other arterial beds such as the coronary and cerebral arteries and with manifest atherosclerotic diseases. It has also been shown that they are at least in part potent predictors for future cardiovascular disease. Transcutaneous ultrasound of the carotid tree offers the possibility of detecting atherosclerotic changes on a noninvasive basis. In the following, the different methods for the assessment of ather

Graft vascular disease in the great vessels and vasa vasorum.

To determine whether the great vessels were subject to transplantation-associated arteriosclerosis (graft vascular disease) we studied sections of aorta and pulmonary arteries from 19 cardiac explant cases. Sections of the same vessels from five autopsied hearts from patients who had received liver and/or kidney transplants with immunotherapy as well as from eight recipient hearts served as controls. In addition, eight donor hearts (three aortae and eight pulmonary arteries) that were not used for heart transplantation were examined. Intimal proliferation was noted in the aorta but affected th
