Fine needle puncture (FNP) is a widespread technique used to collect cellular samples. Its efficiency can be enhanced by the use of ultrasonography to guide the procedure. Ultrasound-guided FNP is therefore an operator-dependent exam. For this reason, it demands the acquisition of psychomotor skill, ability to recognize structures, and dexterity during the needle puncture. This study describes the development of an artisanal simulator made with gelatin to replace the use of live animals during practical classes in veterinary or medical sciences education. The experimental set consisted of thre

BACKGROUND/IMPORTANCE: Ultrasound (US)-guided cervical selective nerve root injections (CSNRI) have been proposed as an alternative to fluoroscopic (FL) -guided injections. When choosing US guidance, the proceduralist should be aware of potential issues confirming vertebral level, be clear regarding terminology, and up to date regarding the advantages and disadvantages of US-guided CSNRI.
OBJECTIVE: Review the accuracy and effectiveness of US guidance in avoiding vascular puncture (VP) and/or intravascular injection (IVI) during CSNRI.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: Queries included PubMed, CINAHL and Emb

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the topographic anatomy of the tibial nerve and its medial calcaneal branches in relation to the tip of the medial malleolus and to the posterior superior tip of the calcaneal tuberosity using the ultrasound examination and to verify its preoperative usefulness in surgical treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral ultrasound examination was performed on 30 volunteers and the location of the tibial nerve bifurcation and medial calcaneal branches origin were measured. Medial calcaneal branches were analysed in reference to the amount and t

The management of patients with solid organ injuries has changed since the introduction of technically advanced imaging tools, such as ultrasonography and multiple scan computerized tomography, interventional radiological techniques and modern intensive care units. In spite of this development in the management of these patients, major solid organ traumas can still be challenging. There has been great improvement in the non-operative management (NOM) of intra-abdominal solid organ injury in recent decades. In most cases treatment of injuries has shifted from early surgical treatment to NOM.

Polyarteritis nodosa is a necrotising vasculitis of small and medium-sized arteries. All coats of these vessels are involved easily resulting in aneurysm formations. It is an immunologic disease owing to immune complexes deposits. Kidney affection is over 80%. Polyarteritis nodosa may be complicated by perirenal hematoma, hemobilia, intrahepatic hemorrhage, epidural hematoma. Spontaneous perirenal hematoma can be the initial manifestation of this disease. Abdominal ultrasonography can provide a quick diagnosis of complicating disease and embolization by interventional radiology may be consider

BACKGROUND: Intravascular tumor thrombi are mainly found in patients with liver cancer or renal carcinoma but rarely occur in those with rectal cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case report of a 58-year-old woman with a swollen right lower extremity 14 months after radical resection for rectal cancer. Although ultrasonography indicated the presence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) located in the right common iliac vein, interventional angiography showed that a circular mass, considered a tumor thrombus, was located in the right common iliac vein. The tumor thrombus was cured by intervention

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of interventional techniques in the treatment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and its complication of acute massive pulmonary thrombosis embolism (PTE).
METHODS: Twenty massive PTE patients received the examinations of Doppler ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) and venography. After a definite diagnosis, interventional therapy was used for symptomatic controls. The interventional procedures included catheter fragmentation and suction (n = 11), catheter-directed thrombolysis (n = 7), stent placement (n = 4) and inferior vena cava (IVC) filter

Despite the reduction in stent failure with newer-generation drug-eluting stents, very late stent thrombosis (VLST) remains an unpredictable and potentially catastrophic complication of coronary revascularization procedures and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Here, we present an updated overview of the latest advances in understanding the causes of VLST. Clinical studies that revealed potential risk factors and pathophysiologic studies on the mechanisms of VLST are discussed. Importantly, novel insights from recent advances in intravascular imaging are included. To date, there

When endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) fails to decompress the biliary system or the pancreatic duct, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided biliary or pancreatic access and drainage can be used. Data show a high success rate and acceptable adverse event rate for EUS-guided biliary drainage. The outcomes of EUS-guided biliary drainage seem equivalent to percutaneous drainage and ERCP, whereas only retrospective studies are available for pancreatic duct drainage. In this article, revision of the technical and clinical status and the current evidence of interventional EUS-gu

Problems in the distinction between gastritis and gastric cancer on CT and the evaluation of cancer on endoscopic ultrasonography have been highlighted. Four cases of gastric cancer in Crohn's disease draw attention to this as a disease-related complication. Patient preference for barium upper gastrointestinal study compared with endoscopy has been challenged, as has the reliability of the radiologic diagnosis of duodenitis. CT in peptic ulcer disease is evaluated and there is continued interest for interventional feeding techniques, with two papers on the fluoroscopic placement of nasoenteric

BACKGROUND: Venous pseudoaneurysms are rare complications of vascular access and are frequently misdiagnosed due to their nonspecific clinical presentation.
CASE SUMMARY: A 76-year-old man presented with painful left lower extremity swelling and ecchymosis following atrial fibrillation ablation. Duplex ultrasonography revealed a left common femoral vein pseudoaneurysm. Ultrasound-guided thrombin injection was successfully performed. Follow-up imaging demonstrated complete thrombosis of the pseudoaneurysm.
DISCUSSION: Common femoral vein pseudoaneurysm is a rare but clinically important compl

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided pancreatic duct drainage is one of the most challenging procedures in therapeutic endoscopy. Technical success is lower than for other therapeutic EUS procedures. However, when successful in a clear clinical indication, this procedure can offer a useful therapeutic alternative and improves the overall clinical success of the endoscopic approach. Current challenges include the standardization of clinical indications and of the techniques used for accessing the pancreatic duct, the strategy for mid-term and long-term management, and definition of the scope of t

Percutaneous US guided nephrostomy is the simplest and most direct technique to drain an obstructed kidney. The indications are included in two groups: temporary drainage and permanent drainage; the former is indicated in the non endoscopically superable ureteral obstruction, in pyonephrosis, in pregnant women and in transplanted kidneys (due to the easier access), the latter is exclusively reserved to neoplastic obstructions. The only real contraindication to the method, besides a documented allergy to local anaesthetics, is represented by a severe coagulopathy. Positioning techniques are the

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has evolved from a diagnostic method for staging tumors and diagnostic tissue acquisition to a technology that has revolutionized minimally invasive endoscopic care across the disease spectrum. Recent years have witnessed a rapid advance in the number and types of procedures that are performed and in the devices that are designed to deliver EUS-guided interventions. These advances offer safer, less-invasive alternatives to traditional therapies and define disruptive technologies that are impacting patient care. The purpose of this review is to discuss the state of t
