The effect of suprapubic catheterization versus transurethral catheterization after abdominal surgery on urinary tract infection: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Transurethral catheterization is generally associated with a higher incidence of urinary tract infections than suprapubic catheterization; however, suprapubic catheterization is associated with other disadvantages such as higher costs and a more difficult technique, and at the moment there is no consensus about the use of both catheter systems. Therefore, a prospective randomized study was performed to investigate the effects of suprapubic catheterization and transurethral catheterization in patients undergoing surgery on the incidence of urinary tract infections and patient sa

Telenursing Intervention for Clean Intermittent Urinary Catheterization Patients: A Pilot Study.

Telenursing is a promising strategy to make nursing care feasible in different health situations, mainly to help patients with chronic illnesses. The aim in this study was to test the feasibility (acceptability and usability) of a telenursing intervention in care delivery to patients using clean intermittent urinary catheterization. This descriptive study focused on an intervention involving urology outpatients. The telenursing intervention was implemented synchronously by audio calls and chat and asynchronously by e-mail as part of a pilot study. The contact between nurse and patient was unde…

History of Nocturia May Guide Urinary Catheterization for Total Joint Arthroplasty.

Urinary tract infection is a common complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and can be related to urethral catheterization. This study attempted to determine whether nocturia could be used as an indicator of risk for postoperative urinary retention to limit the need for prophylactic catheterization in men undergoing TKA. A retrospective study was performed in a consecutive series of men undergoing TKA at a single Veterans Affairs medical center. Patients reporting 0 episodes or 1 episode of nocturia per night were not catheterized prophylactically, and patients reporting 2 or more epi

Clean intermittent catheterization and urinary diversion in the management of renal transplant recipients with lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Renal transplant recipients with lower urinary tract dysfunction may be managed by urinary diversion or clean intermittent catheterization. To evaluate the comparative problems associated with each mode of therapy we studied 13 patients managed by clean intermittent catheterization (group 1, 6 patients) or urinary diversion (group 2, 7 patients). All 6 and 2 of 7 recipients in groups 1 and 2, respectively, had a neuropathic bladder. Mean followup was 3.7 +/- 1.5 (group 1) and 5.7 +/- 4.9 (group 2) years. Three allografts were lost in group 2 due to rejection (2) and death (1). Two patients eac

Interactive mHealth Applications for Caregiver Training in Urinary Catheterization: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Urinary catheterization is common across care settings, but safe management at home and during care transitions often depends on caregivers who receive limited and inconsistent training. Mobile health (mHealth) applications may support caregiver education and decision-making. This review mapped and synthesized evidence on interactive mobile applications for caregiver training in urinary catheterization and developed a conceptual framework to inform nursing practice. Methods: A scoping review was conducted according to Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and reported followi…

Urinary Catheterization Induces Delirium-Like Behavior Through Glucose Metabolism Impairment in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Delirium, an acute confusion status, is associated with adverse effects, including the development of Alzheimer's disease. However, the etiology and underlying mechanisms of delirium remain largely to be determined. Many patients have urinary catheterization (UC), and UC is associated with delirium. However, the cause effects of UC-associated delirium and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. We, therefore, established an animal model of UC, without urinary tract infection, in mice and determined whether UC could induce delirium-like behavior in the mice and the underly…
