Raisins are dried grapes that are popular shelf-stable snacks. Three commercially important types of raisins were studied: sun-dried (natural), artificially dried (dipped), and sulfur dioxide-treated (golden) raisins. Dietary fiber composition was analyzed by AACC method 32-25. Polysaccharides were hydrolyzed, and the resulting sugars were analyzed by colorimetric and gas chomatographic methods. Content of hydroxyproline, thyrosine, hexuronic acids, hexoses and dry weight of lungs were studied in animals with pneumoconiosis, caused by various agents: two types of silicosis, induced by crystalline and condensed modifications of silica, and anthracosis, caused by anthracite. Abnormal urinary excretion of sialoglycoconjugates was observed in four patients with mucopolysaccharidosis. Urinary sialoglycoconjugates were fractionated into 8 fractions by sequential gel filtration on Sephadex G-25, G-50 and by Dowex 1 ion-exchange chromatography. Content of collagen and relative content of unextractable collagen were increased by 35% and 50%, respectively, while the content of immobilized water was decreased in costal cartilage of children with the isolated form of funnel chest or with the deformation accompanied by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. These anomalies may be considered as indicators of the cartilage premature ageing. In skin of the children with isolated form of funnel chest the ratio of collagen extracted with acetic acid was increased 2-fold.

The effects of salicylate and indomethacin on glycosaminoglycan synthesis by intact articular cartilage were examined ex vivo. Distal femora of normal dogs were transected at the diaphysis and incubated in medium containing sodium salicylate or indomethacin and 35SO4. Uronic acid contents of habitually loaded and habitually unloaded regions of the condyles averaged 4.2% and 3.1% of the tissue dry weight, respectively.
