DYSPHONIA AS AN UNCOMMON PRESENTATION OF PONTOCEREBELLAR CHOROID PLEXUS PAPILLOMA.

A case is presented of a patient with dysphonia, hearing loss and ataxia due to vestibulocochlear and vagal nerve compression by choroid plexus papilloma in the cerebellopontine angle. Choroid plexus papillomas are rare tumors usually arising in the lateral and fourth ventricle, and rarely found in the cerebellopontine angle, making the neuroimaging characteristics usually not sufficient for diagnosis. Patients usually present with headache and hydrocephalus but tumors in the cerebellopontine angle can cause vestibulocochlear dysfunction and cerebellar symptoms. Dysphonia along with hearing lo

Bilateral narrow duplication of the internal auditory canal.

AIM: To demonstrate diagnostic imaging of an extremely rare presentation of bilateral narrow duplication of the internal auditory canal. CA … o our knowledge, this is only the third such case described in the literature. Considering that the vestibulocochlear nerve has been unable to be demonstrated in almost all cases of duplicated internal auditory canal (unilateral and bilateral), our case supports the hypothesis that vestibulocochlear nerve aplasia or hypoplasia leads to internal auditory canal stenosis. W …

Evaluation of the Prognostic Capacity of the Imaging Features in Cochlear Implant Patients with Cochlear Nerve Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) is a prevalent inner ear malformation, and several studies have identified a correlation between … in this study. Imaging features, including internal auditory canal (IAC) diameter, IAC nerve grade, vestibulocochlear nerve (VCN) area, and the area ratio of the vestibulocochlear nerve to the facial nerve (VCN/FN), were evaluated. The optimal cut-off values for each continuous imaging parameter were calculated via maximally selected rank statistics. The effects of imagi …

Missed Anterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysm Mimicking Vestibular Neuritis-Clues to Prevent Misdiagnosis.

We discuss a case with combined vestibulocochlear and facial neuropathy mimicking a less urgent peripheral vestibular pattern of acute vestibular syndrome (AVS). With initial magnetic resonance imaging read as normal, the patient was treated for vestibular neuropathy until headaches worsened and a diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage was made. On conventional angiography, a ruptured distal right-sided aneurysm of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery was diagnosed and coiled. Whereas acute vestibular loss usually points to a benign peripheral cause of AVS, combined neuropathy of the vestibul

Audiovestibular neuropathy in an immunocompetent man with cryptococcal meningitis.

INTRODUCTION: Cryptococcus spp. is a fungus responsible for 600,000 deaths per year worldwide, mainly in immunosuppressed subjects. However, … RI was suggestive of cryptococcal meningitis. A cystic lesion in the right flocculus compressed the vestibulocochlear nerve. During monthly follow-up, pure tone audiometry gradually improved and speech audiometry in silence returned to normal. Partial resynchronization of the auditory afferent pathways was observed only on the contralateral side to vestibulocochlear nerv …

[Vestibular schwannoma].

The vestibular schwannoma is a benign intracranial tumor of the myelin-forming cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve or cranial nerve VIII. It comprises 8-10% of all intracranial neoplasms in adults. It originates in the vestibular portion of the cranial nerve VIII and it is located in the cerebellopontine angle. This disorder is characterized by ipsilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, disturbed sense of balance and altered gait, facial numbness, muscle weakness or ipsilateral paralysis. This report presents the magnetic resonance imaging of a patient with this rare condition.

The vestibulocochlear bases for wartime posttraumatic stress disorder manifestations.

Preliminary findings based on earlier retrospective studies of 229 wartime head injuries managed by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)/National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) Neurosurgery Service during the period 2003-08 detected a threefold rise in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) manifestations (10.45%) among Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) having concomitant vestibulocochlear injuries compared to 3% for the TBI group without vestibulo-cochlear damage (VCD), prompting the authors to undertake a more focused study of the vestibulo-auditory pathway in explaining the development of po

An unusual case of neglected CSOM presenting with perineural spread along seventh/eighth cranial nerves to form cerebellar peduncle abscess: A case report.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a common otologic disorder that may occasionally result in intracranial complications. However, e … e absence of alternative pathways of intracranial extension, perineural spread along the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves was considered the most plausible mechanism of infection dissemination. This case highlights a rare route of intracranial spread of otogenic infection through the VII/VIII cranial nerve complex, culminating in cerebellar peduncle abscess formation. …

Experimental animal models of drug-induced sensorineural hearing loss: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: This narrative review describes experimental animal models of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) caused by ototoxic agents. BACKGROUND: SNHL primarily results from damage to the sensory organ within the inner ear or the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII). The main etiology of SNHL includes genetic diseases, presbycusis, ototoxic agents, infection, and noise exposure. Animal models with functional and anatomic damage to the sensory organ within the inner ear or the vestibulocochlear nerve mimicking the damage seen in humans are employed to explore the mechanism and potentia…

Congenital bilateral facial nerve hypoplasia with sensorineural hearing loss: a case report.

A 3-year-old child presented with congenital bilateral facial nerve palsy with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. High Resolution Computed Tomogram (HRCT) of the temporal bones found bilateral atresia of cochlear nerve canals, incomplete partition of the cochleae and narrow facial nerve canals. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral hypoplasia of facial nerves and aplasia of both vestibulocochlear nerves. There have been no other reported cases with this presentation. The possible aetiology and treatment options for the patient are discussed. We highlighted the review …
