Vibration-induced multifocal neuropathy in forestry workers: electrophysiological findings in relation to vibration exposure and finger circulation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate neural conduction in the upper limbs of symptomatic forestry workers with and without exposure to hand-transmitted vibration. A further aim was to assess the possible relationships between vibration exposure, nerve conduction and finger circulation in the forestry workers who used chain saws. METHODS: A detailed neurophysiological investigation was performed on the upper extremities of 20 chain saw workers, 20 forestry operators with heavy manual work but without vibration exposure, and 20 healthy male controls. All subjects were screened to exclude polyneuropathy. …

Implausibility of the vibrational theory of olfaction.

The vibrational theory of olfaction assumes that electron transfer occurs across odorants at the active sites of odorant receptors (ORs), serving as a sensitive measure of odorant vibrational frequencies, ultimately leading to olfactory perception. A previous study reported that human subjects differentiated hydrogen/deuterium isotopomers (isomers with isotopic atoms) of the musk compound cyclopentadecanone as evidence supporting the theory. Here, we find no evidence for such differentiation at the molecular level. In fact, we find that the human musk-recognizing receptor, OR5AN1, identified u…

Analysis of vibration and comfort in infants.

Infants are routinely subjected to vibration and stress when moved. While some research exists for simulated motion in cars, other transportation means such as prams are rarely studied. Additionally, the effect of vibration on the comfort of infants or young children who are unable to provide feedback has never been addressed. The objective of this study was to measure and evaluate vibrations transmitted to infants lying on a pram during a walk using wearable inertial measurement units. Sensors were placed on the infant's forehead and thorax, on the pram, on the ankle and wrist of the parent p…

Biotremology: Vibrational communication of Psylloidea.

Psyllids perform duetting via vibrational signals between genders that are important in pre-copulation species specific recognition. To date, vibrational behavior has been recorded in more than 100 species of psyllid, which is still only a small fraction of the ∼4000 described species. In this overview, we categorize the duet behavior into (1) reciprocal duets, (2) engaged duets, (3) three-way duets and (4) loose duets. In species with notable signal differences between genders, typically the male possesses a longer, more complex signal, which is emitted at a higher frequency compared to those…

Vibrational Therapies for Vocal Fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Vibration is commonly used to relax tension in the limb and truck muscle. Vibration used directly on the muscle concerned and vertical vibration used on the whole-body through a foot platform have been reported in the literature to be useful to release muscle tension. AIM: The present study investigated the effect of indirect whole-body vibration (WBV) and direct localized perilaryngeal vibration (LPV) on the phonatory functions of nondysphonic individuals with vocal fatigue. METHODS: Forty-four subjects (mean age = 21.67 years) with normal voice, were randomly assigned to either…

Vibrations and their applications in sport. A review.

In sport, mechanical vibration is used as a massage tool and/or for training purposes. Two varieties of vibration training (VT) can be distinguished: strength exercises with superimposed vibratory stimulation (VS exercises) and motor tasks performed under whole body vibration (the WBV training). Vibratory massage has been used extensively since the beginning of the 20th century while VT is a relatively new technique. In the research literature, the main subjects addressed have been acute and cumulative effects of VS on flexibility and strength. Marked enhancement effects were obtained in mediu…

[The role of vibration in pathology of hearing].

Vibration is now considered as one of the most common environmental traumatic factors. The energy absorbed may exert a pathological effect on all bodily tissues and organs, although the consequences of exposure to vibration do not present a uniform clinical picture. Because all machines and vibrating tools also produce noise, the combined effect of both factors is usually examined. In the professional literature, an opinion predominates that vibration exerts only a week, additional traumatic influence on the hearing organ. This opinion is contrary to reports on vibration-related hearing impair…

The evaluation of vehicle vibration and seats.

Measurements of vibration in a variety of road vehicles in common use are compared with the guidance provided in ISO 2631-2974 (E) (Guide for the evaluation of human exposure to vibration). For typical journey durations many of the vibration levels are in excess of the levels corresponding to the 'reduced comfort boundaries' and 'fatigue decreased proficiency boundaries' defined in the ISO Standard. Some of the problems inherent in comparing the measured vibration levels with the Standard are outlined and the need for a revised format for the Standard is discussed. A method of summarising the …

Kinesthetic illusions induced by muscle tendon vibration: The orientation of the vibration motor as a new methodological factor?

PURPOSE/AIM: To investigate the impact of changing the rotational orientation of the vibrating motor on kinesthestic illusions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty healthy individuals received vibration over the wrist flexor muscles of dominant and non-dominant sides (80 Hz, 1 mm, 10 seconds) using four conditions (3 trials/conditions) defined by the rotational direction of the vibrator's eccentric rotating mass according to the anatomical position: (1) proximodistal, (2) distoproximal, (3) mediolateral and (4) lateromedial. Non-parametric statistical analyses were used to compare illusion characte…

Acute effects of local vibration inducing tonic vibration reflex or illusion of movement on maximal wrist force production.

Local vibration (LV) mainly stimulates primary afferents (Ia) and can induce a tonic vibration reflex (TVR) and an illusion of movement. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of these two phenomena on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) capacity. LV (80 Hz) was applied to the wrist flexor muscles in two randomized experiments for 6 min. LV conditions were adjusted to promote either TVR (visual focus on the vibrated wrist) or ILLUSION [hand hidden, visual focus on electromyographic activity of the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR)]. Mechanical and electromyographic (EMG) responses…

Acute effects of vibration foam rolling and local vibration during warm-up on athletic performance in tennis players.

Athletes are currently fond of vibration foam rollers (VFRs) and commercial portable vibration percussion devices (PVPDs). It is still unknown whether using these devices during warm-up has an immediate impact on athletic performance. A randomized block design was used in this study. The acute effects of VFR and PVPD on tennis players' athletic performance during warm-up were compared. For the countermovement jump (CMJ), reactive strength index (RSI), and hexagon test (HT), the difference in performance between all interventions was significant (p = 0.007-0.034, η2p = 0.266-0.364). Only those …

Acute effects of whole-body vibration on trunk and neck muscle activity in consideration of different vibration loads.

The intention of this study was to systematically analyze the impact of biomechanical parameters in terms of different peak-to-peak displacements and knee angles on trunk and neck muscle activity during whole-body vibration (WBV). 28 healthy men and women (age 23 ± 3 years) performed four static squat positions (2 peak-to-peak displacements x 2 knee angles) on a side alternating vibration platform with and without vibration stimulus. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to record the neuromuscular activity of the erector spinae muscle, the rectus abdominis muscle, and of the splenius muscle…

[Isotope capillary test in the diagnosis of a vascular form of vibration syndrome caused by local mechanical vibration].

The authors have compared evaluations of the rate of hand skin capillary flow at rest with the results of other studies used in the clinical diagnosis of the vibration syndrome resulting from the hand-transmitted vibrations. Multispecialist medical and auxiliary examinations including the radioisotopic capillary test, have been carried out in 78 patients referred to the Clinic because of suspected vibration syndrome. The values of flow at rest have been taken into account. In 34 patients the flow was slowed down. The lack of correlation between the slowed capillary flow at rest and clinical ev…

Modulation of bone's sensitivity to low-intensity vibrations by acceleration magnitude, vibration duration, and number of bouts.

UNLABELLED: Variables defining vibration-based biomechanical treatments were tested by their ability to affect the musculoskeleton in the growing mouse. Duration of a vibration bout, but not variations in vibration intensity or number of vibration bouts per day, was identified as modulator of trabecular bone formation rates. INTRODUCTION: Low-intensity vibrations (LIV) may enhance musculoskeletal properties, but little is known regarding the role that individual LIV variables play. We determined whether acceleration magnitude and/or the number and duration of daily loading bouts may modulate …
