This compendium has been written in conjunction with a cleft lip and palate surgical mission that took place in Villahermosa, Mexico, February 4-9, 2001. Fifty children, 10 per day, received lip or palate surgery. This report, available in both English and Spanish, is intended as a practical and concise guide to basic aspects of evaluation and treatment of speech disorders associated with cleft palate. More detailed and comprehensive sources dealing with this topic are available and have been reviewed by D. P. Kuehn and K. T. Moller (2000).

The anthrax bioterrorist attacks in 2001 affected millions of people who process, sort, and deliver mail. To more effectively communicate information intended to protect the health of these workers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention produced a short-format educational video in December 2001 that targets this diverse group. This report illustrates how an educational video can be rapidly produced to translate and disseminate public health recommendations as part of a public health emergency response.

To characterize and classify neonatal seizures, we studied 349 neonates, using a portable, cribside EEG/polygraphic/video monitoring system. We recorded 415 clinical seizures in 71 infants; 11 other infants had electrical seizure activity without clinical accompaniments. Each seizure was analyzed in terms of its clinical character and its relationship to the presence of EEG seizure activity. A patient with fits of laughter due to a tumorous alteration (hyperplasia) of the floor of the third ventricle is described with electroencephalographic findings indicative of focal epilepsy (complex partial seizures = psychomotor fits). The laughter is interpreted as an inborn emotional expression with structural substrate in the hypothalamus and neighboring brain. With structures remaining intact functional disorders in this area can cause epileptic phenomena with participation of the limbic system.

We present the case of a 51-year-old female who had a four-year history of Parkinson's disease with severe "on-off' and disabling progression of symptoms on chronic levodopa therapy. During impact, equine hooves undergo viscoelastic deformations which may result in potentially harmful strains. Previous hoof strain studies using strain gauges have been inconclusive due to arbitrary gauge placement. Photoelastic stress analysis (PSA) is a full-field technique which visually displays strains over entire loaded surfaces. This in vitro study identifies normal hoof strain patterns using PSA.
