Viruses and febrile convulsions.

In 276 children admitted to hospital with febrile convulsions a wide range of virus types was identified by means of nasopharyngeal secretions and cough/nasal swabs. The overall virus identification rate was 49%. Analysis of age, sex, family history, and past history showed no marked differences between the virus-positive and the virus-negative children. More than 80% had symptoms of respiratory infection in association with their convulsions, whether or not a virus was identified. Convulsions were not apparently more severe in the virus-positive group. Rapid virus diagnosis was found helpful

GS-1 blocks entry of herpes viruses and more broadly inhibits enveloped viruses.

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) are significant global health concerns, infecting over 66% of the population. VZ … ovel formulation of undecylenic acid compounded with L-Arginine, as an entry inhibitor of enveloped viruses. In vitro studies demonstrate the antiviral activity of GS-1 against both VZV and HSV-1, with EC50 values ranging from 26 μg/mL to 62 μg/mL. Additionally, GS-1 displayed antiviral activity against VZV in an ex vivo human skin model, indicating its p …

Bats and zoonotic viruses: can we confidently link bats with emerging deadly viruses?

An increasingly asked question is 'can we confidently link bats with emerging viruses?'. No, or not yet, is the qualified answer based on the evidence available. Although more than 200 viruses - some of them deadly zoonotic viruses - have been isolated from or otherwise detected in bats, the supposed connections between bats, bat viruses and human diseases have been raised more on speculation than on evidence supporting their direct or indirect roles in the epidemiology of diseases (except for rabies). However, we are convinced that the evidence points in that direction and that at some point …

Tropical viruses approaching Europe.

During the last years, headlines about the advance of tropical infectious diseases, which are transmitted by mosquitos, become more frequent. Some of these mosquitos are classified as invasive species in Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are enhancing the observation of the geographical spread of these species. Especially the Asian tiger mosquito and the Yellow fever mosquito are in focus. In Germany the vector competency of domestic mosquito species is investigated.

[Innate immunity against viruses].

Viruses are obligate parasites which are able to infect cells of all living organisms. Multiple antiviral defense mechanisms have appeared early in evolution of the immune system. Higher vertebrates have the most complex antiviral immunity which is based on both innate and adoptive immune responses. However, majority of living organisms, including plants and invertebrates, rely exclusively on innate immune mechanisms for protection against viral infections. There are some striking similarities in several components of the innate immune recognition between mammals, plants and insects, rendering…

Class II enveloped viruses.

A number of viruses transport their genomic material from cell to cell enclosed within a lipid bilayer that is in turn encased within a symmetric protein shell. This review focuses in a group of RNA viruses that have this type of virions. This group includes several of important human pathogenic viruses, such as the hepatitis C virus, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, rubella virus and the bunyaviruses. The best studied are the flaviviruses and the alphaviruses, which have a β-sheet rich class II viral fusion protein used for entry into susceptible cells. We extend here the class II concept to …

Resident viruses, but not honeybee-associated viruses, impair solitary bee fitness in the field.

Viruses can impact individual host fitness and host population dynamics, especially following host shifts. Thus, the decline of wild solitary bee populations over the last few decades may be linked to viruses or other pathogens. However, evidence for the impact of viruses-transmitted from other genera or resident in solitary bees-on their fitness remains scarce. Here, by assessing solitary bee (Osmia cornuta) foraging, offspring sex ratio, survival and body mass across seven locations in northern Switzerland, we show that resident viruses-but not honeybee-associated viruses-can impact fitness …
