The ability to rapidly and accurately detect water toxicity is crucial for monitoring water quality and assessing toxic risk, but such detection remains a great challenge. Here, we present a plasmonic nanomechanical sensing (PNMS) system for the rapid assessment of water toxicity. This technique is based on the plasmonic sensing of the nanomechanical movement of single bacterial cells, which could be inhibited upon exposure to potential toxicants. By correlating the amplitude of nanomechanical movement with bacterial activity, we detected a variety of toxic substances in water. The direct read

The sediment-water interface is a key zone for the release, retention, and transformation of internal phosphorus (P) in wetlands. Wetland vegetation can alter the source-sink status of P at this interface by modifying hydrodynamic conditions, rhizosphere redox environments, plant uptake, and microbial processes. We synthesized the mechanisms by which wetland vegetation regulates P transport and transformation across the sediment-water interface, including physical sediment stabilization, radial oxygen loss, and iron-phosphorus coupling, plant-microbe interactions, and litter decomposition feed

Porous media with constricted throats and heterogeneous surfaces dictate microplastic transport and retention within the soil-groundwater continuum; however, the multifaceted mechanisms governing their subsurface accumulation remain poorly understood. This study quantifies microplastic migration pathways, adsorption hotspots, and breakthrough dynamics in aquifers using a high-resolution pore-scale Lagrangian framework that couples hydrodynamic drag, Brownian motion, dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces, and surface adsorption. Our results demonstrate that while Brownian perturbations fundamentally d

Predicting runoff and providing water quality early warnings becomes critical for timely monitoring of water resources. In particular, it needs to be robust under varying rainfall conditions, sensor noise and catchment conditions. We propose WRO-Water system, a hydrology-guided multi-head attention Transformer with mass-balance regularization for runoff forecasting, water quality prediction and anomaly-based early warning. The hydrology-guided attention is different from the default Transformer, which only uses content-based self-attention, by making the temporal attention scores dependent on

Capillary-driven upward movement of contaminated groundwater and subsequent surface evaporation can lead to salt accumulation in the vadose zone. Conversely, infiltration events such as rainfall or flooding may remobilize these salts and transport them downward toward the water table. While previous studies have often addressed these processes in isolation, a comprehensive understanding of their coupled behavior remains limited. This study presents a controlled laboratory investigation of salt mobility in the vadose zone using three types of granular porous media: beach sand, silica sand, and

Urban stormwater control is an urgent concern in megacities where increased impervious surface has disrupted natural hydrology. Water managers are increasingly turning to more environmentally friendly ways of capturing stormwater, called Green Infrastructure (GI), to mitigate combined sewer overflow (CSO) that degrades local water quality. A rapid screening approach is described to evaluate how GI strategies can reduce the amount of stormwater runoff in a low-density residential watershed in New York City. Among multiple possible tools, the L-THIA LID online software package, using the SCS-CN

The invasion of DNAPL into fractured low permeability deposits results in the formation of secondary source zones that represent a long-term source of VOCs to adjacent aquifers. We present data from a site underlain by a fractured mudstone contaminated with TCE DNAPL that was poised for release following remediation of the overlying aquifer. Observations of contaminant distributions and fracture networks from the site and a nearby mudstone exposure respectively, enabled prediction of the imminent aquifer recontamination. The fractures, likely formed by gypsum dissolution, were characterised by

An advantage of using chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as tracers of ocean circulation is that the time-dependent source functions permit calculation of rates for ocean processes. These compounds are also sensitive indicators highlighting interior ocean regions where surface-derived anomalies can be transported on timescales of decades. Significant applications for CFCs have been for the deep limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, upper ocean ventilation, and biogeochemical rates, including apparent oxygen utilization rates and anthropogenic CO2 invent

The occurrence of chlorinated ethene transformation in a streambed was investigated using concentration and carbon isotope data from water samples taken at different locations and depths within a 15 x 25 m study area across which a tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume discharges. Furthermore, it was evaluated how the degree of transformation is related to groundwater discharge rates, redox conditions, solid organic matter content (SOM) and microbial factors. Groundwater discharge rates were quantified based on streambed temperatures, and redox conditions using concentrations of dissolved redox-sensit

Changes in contaminant fluxes resulting from aggressive remediation of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone were investigated at two sites, one at Hill Air Force Base (AFB), Utah, and the other at Ft. Lewis Military Reservation, Washington. Passive Flux Meters (PFM) and a variation of the Integral Pumping Test (IPT) were used to measure fluxes in ten wells installed along a transect down-gradient of the trichloroethylene (TCE) source zone, and perpendicular to the mean groundwater flow direction. At both sites, groundwater and contaminant fluxes were measured before and after the

An earlier field experiment at Canadian Forces Base Borden by Brewster and Annan [Geophysics 59 (1994) 1211] clearly demonstrated the capability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) reflection profiling to detect and monitor the formation of DNAPL layers in the subsurface. Their experiment involved a large volume release (770 L) of tetrachloroethylene into a portion of the sand aquifer that was hydraulically isolated from groundwater flow by sheet pile walls. In this study, we evaluated the ability of GPR profiling to detect and monitor much smaller volume releases (50 L). No subsurface confining

In an agricultural catchment area in Germany we analyzed water samples from five entry routes for 2 insecticides. 5 fungicides and 13 herbicides. The sewage plant outlet and the emergency overflow of a sewage sewer contained only herbicides. In each farmyard runoff we found on average 24 g pesticides during application period, presumably caused by cleaning the spraying equipment. In comparison, the field runoff and the rainwater sewer contained less load, but also insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. The sewage plant caused 65.9% of the total herbicide load, the sewage sewer 19.8% and the

Deicing salt is an important component of road safety during winter storms. Stormwater infiltration best management practices aim to prevent the salt from polluting streams and waterways, but this may shift pollutants to groundwater resources. In response to limited field studies investigating groundwater quality impacts caused by input of salt from stormwater infiltration best management practices, we monitored water levels and quality of groundwater at various depths in an unconfined aquifer around a stormwater infiltration basin using in situ sensors coupled with grab sampling. Our observat

The quantity of deicing salt applied to paved surfaces in urban watersheds in cold regions has had a significant and cumulative effect on groundwater quality. Whereas road deicing salt is known in general to impact groundwater and surface water quality, quantitative information on the impact of large transport routes is lacking. In this study, we provide a chloride mass balance for an urban stream crossed by a large transport route in south-central Ontario, Canada and quantify likely long-term impacts of salt loading on surface and groundwater resources. The chloride mass balance, supported by

In rural areas, unpaved roads can drive water quality degradation via sediment inputs. Excess sediment loss from poorly maintained unpaved roads to adjacent waterways blocks sunlight, decreasing primary productivity and increasing nutrient concentrations. This is particularly relevant to Arkansas, where 85% of county roads are unpaved; however, few studies have explored the impacts of unpaved roads in rural watersheds dominated by pasture. We sampled Brush Creek (Arkansas) to understand local (i.e., road crossing type) and watershed-scale (e.g., land cover/use) controls on sediment loss. We co

Long-term reliability of blue-green infrastructure is key issue to urban greening. This study presents the results of a long-term experiment conducted on a small bioretention cell without exfiltration, designed as a multilayered constructed soil system planted with four perennial species, located in the Czech Republic. Water balance, water retention capacity of the bioretention cell, soil water potential, and plant growth were monitored over five years. The study aimed to elucidate how perennial plant development and changes in the material properties of subsurface layers influence the retenti

Increased impervious surfaces due to urbanization lead to higher stormwater runoff volumes and degraded surface water quality. In addition to carrying pollutants, urban runoff often exhibits elevated temperatures due to heat absorption by impervious materials, contributing to thermal pollution in receiving waters. Even small temperature increases can disrupt aquatic ecosystems, reduce dissolved oxygen, and threaten temperature-sensitive species such as trout. Green infrastructure, or stormwater control measures (SCMs), such as bio-infiltration basins, have been increasingly used to control run

An integrated understanding of dissolved phosphorous (DP) export mechanism and controls on export over dry and wet periods is crucial for riverine ecological restorations in dammed river basins considering its high bioavailability and retention rates at dams. Riverine DP transport patterns (composition, sources, and transport pathways), export controls, and fate were investigated over the 2020 wet season (5 events) and dry seasons before and after it (2 events: dry(before) and dry(after)) in a semi-arid, small-dammed watershed to comprehend the links between terrestrial DP sources and aquatic

The transport of microplastics (MPs) from urban environments to water resources via stormwater runoff poses significant concerns due to its adverse impacts on water safety and aquatic ecosystems. This study presents a modeling approach aimed at understanding the transport mechanisms of MPs in an urban residential setting, considering settling and buoyant MPs. To consider the effect of MP shapes, the settling velocity of various settling MPs in shapes of fibers, films, and fragments was calculated. Using an analogy of sediment transport, a Rouse number criterion was used to analyze the transpor

The safe operation of underground reservoirs and environmental protection heavily rely on the water flow through coal pillar dams in coal mines. Meanwhile, research on the flow characteristics in coal pillar dams has been limited due to their low hydraulic conductivity. To address this gap, this study assembled a novel seepage experimental device and conducted a series of carefully designed seepage experiments to examine the characteristics of low-permeability in coal pillar dams. The experiments aim to explore the relationship between water flux and hydraulic gradient, considering varying cor
