Prospective memory deficits in euthymic bipolar disorder patients: a preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Prospective memory refers to the ability to remember to do something in the future. To date, little is known about prospective memory deficits in bipolar disorder (BD) in remission (euthymia). This study examined the nature and correlates of prospective memory in these patients. METHODS: Forty-seven euthymic BD patients and 47 matched healthy controls formed the study sample. Socio-demographic and basic clinical characteristics, prospective memory (Cambridge Prospective Memory Test [CAMPROMPT]), retrospective memory (immediate Logical Memory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale…

Memory in intellectually matched groups of young participants with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and those with schizophrenia.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS) and schizophrenia have genetic and neuropsychological similarities, but are likely to differ in memory profile. Confirming differences in memory function between the two disorders, and identifying their genetic determinants, can help to define genetic subtypes in both syndromes, identify genetic risk factors for the emergence of psychosis, and develop pharmacological interventions for cognitive dysfunction. However, no study has compared memory function between 22qDS and schizophrenia, while indirect comparisons are confounded by marked differences in IQ b

[Event-related potentials P₃₀₀ with memory function and psychopathology in first-episode paranoid schizophrenia].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the variability of event-related potentials P(300) and the relationship with memory function/psychopathology in patients with first-episode paranoid schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty patients with first-episode paranoid schizophrenia (patient group) and twenty health subjects (control group) were enrolled in the study. The auditory event-related potentials P₃₀₀ at the scalp electrodes Cz, Pz and Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) were examined in both groups, Positive And Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was evaluated in patient group. RESULTS: In comparison with control group…

Correlations between neuropsychological test results and P300 latency during silent-count and button-press tasks in post-traumatic brain injury patients.

To evaluate the correlations between memory function and intelligence and event-related potential, the P300 component for different tasks was studied for 30 post-traumatic brain injury patients (mean age 31.6 +/- 13.7 years; 23 male and 7 female). Memory function, intelligence, and depression were measured by using the Mini-Mental State Examination, the revised Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Self-Rating Depression Scale, respectively. P300 latency was measured during silent-count and button-press tests at three midline scalp (Fz, Cz, and Pz) sites for all subjects by using an audito

[Analysis of memory dysfunction in OSAS patients].

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxia, reduced cerebral perfusion and sleep fragmentation as the result of recurrent apnea-related episodes in sleep apnea patients may have impact on mental performance such as memory and concentration. Increased number of traffic accidents has been observed in OSAS patients. Patients often complain of concentration and memory problems, as well as sleepiness. The diagnosis of perception processes requires neuropsychological diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 22 sleep apnea patients were involved in the study. RESULTS: Correlation between the number of mistakes in Benton Test a

Effects of atropine on learning and memory functions in dementia.

The effect of intravenous atropine (1 mg) or saline on mnemonic function was tested in patients with various forms of dementia and age-matched controls. Examinees consisted of 12 subjects having Alzheimer's disease (AD), multi-infarct dementia (MID), Parkinson's disease without dementia or with dementia, and normal aged controls. Wechsler's adult memory scale was used. Orientation, visual reproduction, and associative learning were not affected by this small dose of atropine in any of the subgroups. On the other hand, digit span and logical memory were selectively impaired by atropine in AD. T

Association between symptoms of psychological distress and cognitive functioning among adults with coronary artery disease.

Greater psychological distress is associated with cognitive impairment in healthy adults. Whether such associations also exist in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is uncertain. We assessed cognitive function in 496 individuals with CAD using the verbal and visual memory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale and executive functioning measured by the Trail Making Test Parts A and B. We used a composite score of psychological distress derived through summation of Z-transformed psychological distress symptom scales (depression, posttraumatic stress, anxiety, anger, hostility and perceiv…

Working Memory in Portuguese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

A Portuguese sample of 50 children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and 50 typical readers (TR) who were matched for age (8-12 years old) were tested on measures of working memory. Relative to the TR, the children with DD performed significantly worse on phonological loop (PL) and central executive (CE) tasks; however, they exhibited no impairments on visuospatial sketchpad (VSSP) tasks. After controlling for the influence of the PL, the group differences in CE tasks were no longer significant. The results of a receiver-operating characteristics curve analysis and a binary logistic regression

Category specificity in object agnosia: preservation of sensorimotor experiences related to objects.

We report a case of semantic agnosia, characterized by category specificity. Object recognition, mainly involving visual representation, was severely impaired, whereas object recognition involving both visual and sensorimotor representations, was relatively well preserved. His ability to recognize gestures and produce appropriate gestural responses to objects was remarkable. These two factors lead the authors to form a hypothesis, in an attempt to explain the mechanisms involved in object recognition. It has been argued that manipulation of an object may give access to a certain amount of know
