Inverse Dynamics Modeling of Paralympic Wheelchair Curling.

Paralympic wheelchair curling is an adapted version of Olympic curling played by individuals with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and lower extremity amputations. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there has been no experimental or computational research published regarding the biomechanics of wheelchair curling. Accordingly, the objective of the present research was to quantify the angular joint kinematics and dynamics of a Paralympic wheelchair curler throughout the delivery. The angular joint kinematics of the upper extremity were experimentally measured using

Biomechanics and Physiology for Propelling Wheelchair Uphill Slope.

A vertical slope of sidewalks significantly inhibits to the mobility of manual wheelchair users in their daily life. International guidelines of the vertical slope are specified approximately 4% or 5% (1:20) gradient or less as preferred, and allow 8.3% (1:12) as its maximum when it is impossible. Relevant research of the physical strain for wheelchair users with pushing on slopes, and the validity assessment of slope guidelines have been investigated. However, the analysis for the effect of a slope distance and their transient performance are still remained. The purpose of this study is to cl

The effects of experience on the energy cost of wheelchair propulsion.

BACKGROUND: Gross mechanical efficiency (GE) of experienced wheelchair users is significantly higher than novice able-bodied individuals suggesting energy expenditure (EE) may be reduced in experienced individuals. With knowledge of the energy expended during wheelchair propulsion, nutritional recommendations can be provided for individuals in their early stages of rehabilitation and for habituated wheelchair users. AIM: To investigate the effects of experience on EE during wheelchair propulsion at fixed power outputs (PO's). DESIGN: This was an experimental study. SETTING: The experiment w

Pedestrian pathway characteristics and their implications on wheelchair users.

Individuals who use wheelchairs (WCs) frequently navigate over pathways with obstacles (e.g., bumps or curb descents) or terrain that is extremely rough. Surface characteristics such as roughness can have an effect on comfort and variables associated with bodily injury. Understanding these relationships can be helpful to ensure safe and comfortable access to all public and private pathways. This article reviews existing research related to the topics of surface roughness effects on WC user's bodies, surface roughness measurement techniques, and design guidelines and exposure limits that attemp…

Ergonomic evaluation of a wheelchair transportation securement system.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies guidelines covering the securement system and environment for wheeled mobility device (WhMD) passengers on the public bus system in the United States, referred to as the wheelchair tiedown and occupant restraint system (WTORS). The misuse or disuse of the WTORS system can be a source of injury for WhMD passengers riding the buses. The purpose of this study was to quantify the risks posed to the bus driver while performing the WTORS procedure using traditional ergonomic analysis methods. Four bus drivers completed the WTORS procedure for a rep

Perceived impacts of a first wheelchair on social participation.

PURPOSE: To document perceived impacts in users' daily activities and social roles (social participation) following the acquisition of a first manual or powered wheelchair. METHODS: A qualitative design with a phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. An interview guide was developed based on the 12 social participation categories in the Disability Creation Process (DCP) conceptual model as themes underlying the questions: 'What has changed in your daily life since you got your new wheelchair?' and 'What has not changed in your daily life that you thought

Exercise intensity during wheelchair rugby training.

The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of individuals with a cervical spinal cord injury to achieve and sustain a cardiorespiratory training intensity during wheelchair rugby. Nine wheelchair rugby players completed a continuous peak exercise test on a SciFit Pro I arm ergometer with stage increases each minute to determine peak heart rate and power output. Approximately one week after peak exercise testing, heart rate was recorded (every 5 s) during three regularly scheduled rugby training sessions. Data were analysed to determine the number of continuous minutes that particip

A survey of adult power wheelchair and scooter users.

PURPOSE: Power wheelchairs and scooters have the potential to increase community participation for people with mobility limitations. However, there are also challenges associated with use. The aims of this study were to investigate the characteristics of adults who use power wheelchairs and scooters, explore the process of power-mobility provision and examine the benefits and challenges of use. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was used to recruit power wheelchair or scooter users, aged over 18 years, or their carer, living in New South Wales, Australia. The survey was distributed by m…

Consequences of a cross slope on wheelchair handrim biomechanics.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that pushing on a cross slope leads to increased handrim loading compared with that found on a level surface. DESIGN: Case series. SETTING: Biomechanics laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-six manual wheelchair users. INTERVENTION: Subjects pushed their own wheelchairs on a research treadmill set to level, 3 degrees , and 6 degrees cross slopes. Propulsion speed was self-selected for each cross-slope condition. Handrim biomechanics were measured for the downhill wheel, using an instrumented wheelchair wheel and a motion capture system. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:…

Load on the shoulder in low intensity wheelchair propulsion.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the mechanical load on the glenohumeral joint and on shoulder muscles during wheelchair propulsion at everyday intensities. DESIGN: Model simulations based on experimental input dataBackground. Virtually nothing is known about the mechanical load on the upper extremity during wheelchair propulsion. Hand rim wheelchair propulsion is a significant risk factor for shoulder pain and injury among wheelchair users. A musculoskeletal model of the upper extremity during wheelchair propulsion will quantify the stresses placed on anatomic structures and may provide insight into the

Wheelchair use: a physical sign in gastroenterological practice.

Diagnosis of functional abdominal pain requires exclusion of organic causes, and many patients undergo considerable investigation. A positive physical sign supporting a functional diagnosis could therefore be of benefit. Wheelchair use specifically for abdominal symptoms was suspected to represent such a sign. Review of 300 consecutive new referrals to a gastroenterology clinic revealed 10 wheelchair users. In four women the chair was used because of the abdominal condition. The final diagnosis (with follow-up to at least 12 months) was functional abdominal pain in each of these cases. All fou

Sports injuries in athletes with disabilities: wheelchair racing.

This study investigates the incidence of sports injuries in athletes who participate in wheelchair racing in the UK. Wheelchair racing has been identified as one of the top 'injury risk' sports but little information is available as to the incidence or type of injury sustained by British athletes. A questionnaire was used to collect information about injuries sustained in the last 12 months. Members of the British Wheelchair Racing Association (BWRA) were sent questionnaires. Most subjects (72%) reported having at least one injury within the previous 12 months. Training variables such as the d

Medical Concerns Among Wheelchair Road Racers.

In brief: Before participating in the 1987 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, 43 wheelchair athletes completed a questionnaire about their training methods, injuries, and medical concerns. The injuries reported most frequently were abrasions and musculoskeletal syndromes of the upper extremities. Of particular interest in the study were the types of residual neurologic deficits and autonomic dysfunction among athletes with spinal cord injury. These deficits included altered temperature regulatory mechanisms, neurogenic bladder and bowel, spasticity, and autonomic dysreflexia. Athletes also report
