Ticks transmit pathogens among wildlife and humans, with small mammals acting as key reservoirs. Climate change may increase disease risk through expanding tick distributions and more frequent wildfires, which alter habitat conditions, influencing small mammal communities and tick populations. In 2014, the Sala Fire burned 131 km² of boreal forest in south-central Sweden. Fire intensity, winter conditions, and proximity to water may influence survival of small mammals and ticks. This study investigated the effects of a mega-fire on the dynamics of tick and small mammal populations, focusing on…

In response to the escalating complexity and frequency of wildland fires, this study investigates the feasibility of using wearable devices for real-time monitoring of cardiac, respiratory, physical, and environmental parameters during live wildfire suppression tasks. Data were collected from twelve male firefighters (FFs) from the Italian National Fire Corp during a simulated protocol, including rest, running, and active fire suppression phases. Physiological and physical metrics such as heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory frequency (fR) and physical activity levels wer

Wildfire activity at the Wildland-Urban Interface is increasingly burning structures and anthropogenic materials. It is documented that wildfire alters the form and increases mobility of trace metals in natural environments, yet little is known about their fate in burned anthropogenic materials. We use single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS), to examine how burning during a wildfire impacted the elemental composition, and size of metal containing nanoparticles (< 100 nm) in Tire Crumb Rubber (TCR), an end-of-life tire byproduct used in playgrounds, gardens, and

Wildfire fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an emerging health concern, yet its effects on mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue, remain unclear. Brazil faces one of the world's highest dengue burdens alongside frequent wildfires. We examined the association between short-term wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure and dengue-related hospitalizations across Brazil. We conducted a nationwide two-stage time-series analysis using daily dengue-related hospitalizations and daily wildfire-specific PM2.5 concentrations across all Brazilian immediate-regions from 2008 to 2019. The wildfire-specific P…

INTRODUCTION: Wildfires and deforestation potentially have direct effects on multiple health outcomes as well as indirect consequences for climate change. Tropical rainforest areas are characterised by high rainfall, humidity and temperature, and they are predominantly found in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aims to synthesise the methods, data and health outcomes reported in scientific papers on wildfires and deforestation in these locations.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will carry out a scoping review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) manual for scoping review…

Plumes from wildfires are transported over large distances from remote to populated areas and threaten sensitive ecosystems. Dense wildfire plumes are processed by atmospheric oxidants and complex multiphase chemistry, differing from processes at typical ambient concentrations. For studying dense biomass burning plume chemistry in the laboratory, we establish a Photochemical Large Aerosol Chamber (PHOTO-LAC) being the world's largest aerosol chamber with a volume of 1800 m3 and provide its figures of merit. While the photolysis rate of NO2 (jNO2) is comparable to that of other chambers, the PH…

We investigated short (first post-fire precipitation)- and long-term (11-month) impacts of the Caldor and Mosquito Fires (2021 and 2022) on … trol (0.98 mg C/L and 0.028 mg N/L, respectively). These short and long-term findings indicate that wildfires present potential treatment challenges for public water systems outside of the two studied here.

Natural toxicants, particularly methoxy phenols (MPs) generated by wildfire lignin, can accumulate in the environment, and cause serious health hazards in living organisms. Although the toxicity of MPs such as guaiacol and catechol has recently been described, there is minimal evidence of ecotoxicological effects of syringol. As a result, this study focuses on determining the toxicity by evaluating the cytotoxic and teratogenic effects of syringol in vitro and in vivo in human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells and zebrafish embryos, respectively. The ecotoxicity of syringol was predicted to be

We investigated patterns of volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination in drinking water systems affected by the California 2018 Camp Fire. We performed spatial analysis of over 5000 water samples collected over a 17 month period by a local water utility, sampled tap water for VOCs in approximately 10% (N = 136) of standing homes, and conducted additional nontargeted chemical analysis of 10 samples. Benzene contamination was present in 29% of service connections to destroyed structures and 2% of service connections to standing homes. A spatial pattern was apparent. Tap water in standing hom

Mediterranean forests are highly susceptible to wildfires, which can cause several impacts not only within burnt areas but also on downstream aquatic ecosystems. The ashes' washout from burnt areas by surface runoff can be a diffuse source of toxic substances, such as metals, when reaching the nearby aquatic systems, and can be noxious to aquatic organisms. The present work aimed at assessing the ecotoxicological effects of post-fire contamination on two aquatic producers (the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata and the macrophyte Lemna minor) through in-situ bioassays, validating the obtained…

Colorado is regularly impacted by long-range transport of wildfire smoke from upwind regions. This smoke is a major source of ambient PM2.5. Maternal exposure to total PM2.5 during pregnancy has been linked to decreased birth weight and other adverse outcomes, although the impact of wildfire smoke contribution has only recently been investigated. The objective of this study was to estimate associations between adverse pregnancy outcomes and ambient wildfire smoke PM2.5. Wildfire smoke PM2.5 exposures were estimated using a previously published method incorporating ground-based monitors and rem

Although wildfire smoke is a major public health concern, relatively little is known about individual avoidance behavior. In this paper, we use smartphone-location data to study behavioral responses to smoke during the 2018 California wildfire season, one of the deadliest in recent US history. Using individual-level data, we construct daily measures of when and where California residents spend their time. We find that high levels of smoke increase time spent at home and indoors, while decreasing mobility and time at work. However, we find adaptation starts at relatively high levels of smoke-si

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity worldwide, with growing evidence linking wildfire exposure to adverse mental health outcomes. This scoping review aimed to summarize and critically assess the existing quantitative literature on wildfire-related mental health impacts. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify studies published between 2000 and 2025, which we analyzed to understand how wildfires were investigated, evaluate how exposure was measured, assess mental health outcomes, and identify persistent gaps in the literature. Of 251 unique manuscripts…

Wildfires are having disproportionate impacts on U.S. households. Notably, in California, over half of wildfire-destroyed homes (54%) are in low-income areas. We investigate the relationship between social vulnerability and wildfire community preparedness using building permits from 16 counties in California with 2.9 million buildings (2013-2021) and the U.S. government's designation of disadvantaged communities (DACs), which classifies a census tract as a DAC if it meets a threshold for certain burdens, such as climate, environmental, and socio-economic. Homes located in DACs are 29% more lik…

As the number of highly destructive wildfires grows, it is increasingly important to understand the long-term changes that occur to fire-affected places. Integrating approaches from social and biophysical science, we document two forms of neighborhood change following the 2018 Camp Fire in the United States, examining the more than 17,000 residential structures within the burn footprint. We found that mobile or motor homes, lower-value residences, and absentee owner residences had a significantly higher probability of being destroyed, providing evidence that housing stock filtering facilitated…

Wildfires are an increasing source of emissions into the air, with health effects modulated by the abundance and toxicity of individual species. In this work, we estimate reactive organic compounds (ROC) in western U.S. wildland forest fire smoke using a combination of observations from the 2019 Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) field campaign and predictions from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Standard emission inventory methods capture 40-45% of the estimated ROC mass emitted, with estimates of primary organic aerosol particularl…
