A 51-year-old man who had been suffering from depression stabbed himself in the chest with an ice pick. At presentation, an ice pick lodged in the left fifth intercostal space was moving synchronously with his heartbeat. Echocardiography revealed that the tip was penetrating the anterior wall of the right ventricle. Because the patient was tamponading, an emergency operation was carried out. The ice pick was removed following the establishment of a cardiopulmonary bypass and pericardiotomy. The perforation of the right ventricle was closed with a pledget-reinforced mattress stitch. On postoper

A 21-year-old man was brought to our hospital for a single stab wound in the left flank inflicted with a suicidal intent. The initial computed tomographic (CT) scan of the patient with hypotension revealed a perirenal hematoma. Laparotomy was carried out in order to rule out any wounds of intra-abdominal organs. There was no active bleeding in any intraperitoneal organs, but a stab wound in the left renal lower pole, 2 cm in length, was recognized and considered as the cause of the hematoma. Therefore, the wound of the renal parenchyma, which was accompanied by neither urinary leakage nor fres

Stab wounds encountered in medico-legal autopsies are usually caused by sharp pointed weapons. Peculiarities of the wound of entry in stab wounds, for example due to the hilt of the weapon, movement of the weapon and sometimes by the hand of the assailant holding the weapon are often described in literature. We report an unusual presentation in a fatal stab injury wherein a single atypical external wound was associated with multiple internal injuries to the organs. The exact cause of such peculiarities can never be accurately determined, rather that can be speculated upon at the time of the au

A 28-year-old man attempted to kill himself with a knife stab into the parietal area. Neuroimaging showed no vascular impairment except slow venous flow around the knife due to tamponading. After obtaining informed consent, the knife was removed through a craniotomy without new brain injury. Postoperative neurological findings showed no deficit. Follow-up angiography revealed no vascular impairment. No infection occurred. Brain stab wounds cause numerous complications, such as intracranial hemorrhage, injury of important vessels, and infections. Minimal blade movement during removal and precau

STUDY DESIGN: A rare case of a laterally directed stab wound injury of the cervical spinal cord is reported.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the unusual mechanism of injury of this case and its clinical features. The surgical indications for penetrating injuries of the spinal cord are discussed.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal stab wound injuries are rare, and the literature on the subject is scant. There has been only one large clinical review from South Africa, published in 1977. The clinical features and the injury mechanism of a laterally directed stab wound to the cervical spine have not been

Penetrating trauma is a frequent presentation to urban emergency departments (EDs). Pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade is a possible complication of penetrating trauma to the chest, to the back, and to the upper abdomen. Even if patients are stable initially without signs or symptoms of cardiac tamponade, there can be delayed sequelae. Presented is a case of cardiac tamponade diagnosed 21 days after a stab wound to the epigastrium.

Traumatic air embolism is rare in Australia, but must be treated promptly if patients are to survive. A single fatal case of traumatic air embolism due to penetrating trauma is described with attention to the presenting symptoms and signs, the unsuccessful attempts at resuscitation and correlation with the post-mortem findings. Patients with penetrating chest trauma are at high risk of traumatic air embolism and positive pressure ventilation of the affected lung will cause rapid death if the condition is not immediately recognized. Early aggressive treatment is therefore necessary for survival

A case of callosal disconnection syndrome caused by a penetrating stab wound of the brain is reported. A portion of the genu and the inferior splenium of the corpus callosum were sectioned by an ice pick without any other significant cerebral damage. We could detect incomplete disconnection left visual alexia by tachistoscopy. It would now appear that the inferior part of the splenium has a significant functional role in transmitting visual verbal codes from the right to the left cerebral hemisphere, but the remaining superior fibers of the splenium may carry some information, albeit less effi

Case report about a myocardial infarction following stab wound of the left atrium including a complete severance of the left coronary artery: An athletic 35-year-old man suffered a latero-medial stab wound of the thorax. The knife had penetrated the left lung and the atrium of the hypertrophic left heart. Postoperatively, the patient developed a heart infarction; 40 h after trauma he died. The postmortem revealed traumatic necrosis of the left atrium, an intraoperatively undiscovered complete severance of the ramus circumflexus arteriae coronariae sinistrae and an antero-lateral ischemic cardi

BACKGROUND: Stab wounds (SW) to the thorax raises suspicion for cardiac injuries; however, the topographic description is variable. The present study aims to evaluate different topographical descriptions within the thorax and establish their diagnostic value in penetrating cardiac trauma by SW.
METHODS: Medical records of all patients admitted to our center with thoracic SW from January 2013 to June 2016 were included in this study. Diagnostic value potential was measured using different areas of the thorax described in the literature.
RESULTS: In this study, we analyzed 306 cases. Thirty-ei

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the morphology and depth of stab wounds experimentally produced on human legs amputated for medical reasons using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after the instillation of a single contrast medium solution (CMS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For morphological analysis, MSCT and MRI scans were performed before and after the instillation of CMS into the wound cavity. Depth measurements were performed on the sagittal view only after CMS instillation. Subsequently, each wound was dissected using the layer-by-layer technique and the depth

BACKGROUND: The management of gunshot wounds is a rare challenge for trauma surgeons in Germany and Central Europe as a result of the low incidence of this type of trauma. Penetrating injuries occur with an incidence of 5% in Germany. They are caused by gunshots or more commonly by knives or other objects, for example during accidents. Since even the number of patients who are treated at level 1 trauma centres is limited by the low incidence, the objective of this study was to assess the epidemiology and outcome of gunshot and stab wounds in Germany.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since 2009, the trau

Multiple sharp force injuries in a victim make it difficult to distinguish between homicide and suicide. Forensic pathologists also may be unable to determine the total survival time and the survival time with physical activity due to lack of evidence. The authors report here on a case of nineteen stab wounds of the neck, which led to an initial suspicion of homicide. The scene was however captured on surveillance video, which provided a precise description of the wound mechanism and led to the injuries being reclassified as suicidal. No other description of a suicide with such a high number o

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spondylodiscitis is usually caused by pyogenic infections, associated with retropharyngeal abscesses, or due to the swallowing of foreign bodies. No cases of cervical spondylodiscitis caused by a penetrating neck injury have been published in the literature. We describe a case of cervical spondylodiscitis after multiple knife stab wounds to the lateral soft tissue of the neck.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 54-year-old patient was brought to our clinic with destructive spondylodiscitis C3/4 with paravertebral and epidural ab

This report describes a 60-year-old female presenting with recurrent oral bleeding for 1.5 months after a fall-induced right buccal trauma, during which a branch pierced her check. After undergoing external debridement and suturing at a local hospital without intraoral repair, she developed a right buccal mass and severe anemia. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry, a right buccal depression with hyperpigmented skin, and an irregular cord-like scar-accompanied by a tender, nonpulsatile mass anterior to the right pterygomandibular ligament. Laboratory tests confirmed severe anemia (he

Penetrating transmediastinal traumatic injuries often carry a high mortality given the vital structures this type of injury often involves. Here, we describe a case of 24-year-old man who suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and back with associated cardiac, esophageal, and arterial injury, requiring immediate operative intervention. He underwent sternotomy and left thoracotomy with pericardiotomy, repair of 2 right ventricular lacerations, and ligation of internal mammary artery. The esophageal injury was repaired with endoscopic clips. Patient had an uncomplicated recovery. Despite hig

UNLABELLED: Penetrating wounds to the neck occur in 5-10% of trauma cases and are associated with very high mortality due to proximity to and involvement of vital structures. Emergent airway management and rapid diagnosis in these injuries are essential for life-saving treatment. This case study presents the case of a stab wound to the neck in an adult patient which elicited major concern for cardiovascular, neurological, and airway compromise. In such a high-risk trauma airway, this case shows the importance of keeping a wide differential and the value of expeditious management to prevent ano
