The use of a silicone rubber protective playing splint facilitates an athlete's continued or earlier return to sport participation following injury. The purposes of this paper are to review the literature and to describe the properties, fabrication procedures, and indications for use of the silicone rubber compound materials used to splint athletic hand and wrist injuries. In general, the use of silicone rubber protective splints for stable orthopedic hand and wrist injuries has been shown to be effective.

Purpose Misdiagnosed and maltreated wrist ligament injuries (scapholunate [SL], lunotriquetral, and triangular fibrocartilage complex [TFCC]) filed to the Swedish National Patient Insurance Company (LÖF ["regionernas ömsesidiga försäkringsbolag"]) 2011 to 2018 were analyzed in terms of complications and costs for society. Materials and Methods All filed claims are database registered. The database was assessed in June 2019 through injury International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision-SWE diagnoses. Demographics, reasons for avoidance, type of complication, and costs were assessed. Tr

BACKGROUND: The proprioceptive approach can effectively improve strength, mobility, edema reduction, and pain reduction, which in turn has a positive impact on functionality.
OBJECTIVE: To identify proprioceptive rehabilitation strategies reported in the literature in adults with traumatic wrist injuries.
METHODS: A scoping review was performed following the parameters of the Prisma ScR strategy. We included research with adult patients diagnosed with posttraumatic wrist injuries who used proprioceptive rehabilitation. Pain, functionality, strength, joint mobility ranges, and edema were eval…

Common chronic hand pathologies seen by family physicians include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and de Quervain tenosynovitis. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compressive neuropathy of the upper extremity and is caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is caused by a metaplasia of the A1 flexor tendon pulley and the flexor tendon causing increased friction and decreased space for tendon gliding in the flexor tendon sheath. de Quervain tenosynovitis has a similar metaplasia of the tissues of the first dors

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the burden of successful litigation relating to wrist and hand injuries and surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted using the English national litigation data-base, National Health Service Litigation Authority database.
RESULTS: A total of 325 successful claims were analysed from 2002-2012. The total cost of successful claims was £19.5 million. This comprised £10.9 million in damages, with £8.4 million in legal costs (23% in NHS legal costs, the remainder being claimant costs). The mean cost of settling a claim for wrist and hand i

A thorough understanding of the swing phases and mechanisms of injury in golf allows accurate diagnosis, treatment, and future prevention of injuries. Recommended initial treatment starts with cessation of practice to rest the wrist, a splint or orthotic brace, and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug medication with corticosteroid injection and swing modification. Pisiform excision is the best treatment of the most severe chronic cases of pisiform ligament complex syndrome. Delayed diagnosis of hook of hamate fracture may lead to complications, including flexor tendon rupture. Prompt surgical r

Wrist ligamentous injuries can be challenging to treat successfully. In some cases the ligament repair or reconstruction fails, resulting in instability and progressive degenerative changes. In other cases the original injury is missed, and the patient presents for the first time with established wrist arthritis. Multiple operations have been devised to treat patients with arthrosis secondary to wrist ligament injuries. This article discusses definitive salvage operations such as intercarpal arthrodeses and proximal row carpectomy, as well as other alternatives such as wrist denervation and ra

PURPOSE: To characterize patients with hand or wrist injuries presenting to our university-based emergency department (ED) after a previous evaluation by an outside ED. We hypothesized that a majority of these patients did not require emergent care, most arrived during working hours, and a disproportionate number were uninsured.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 3,047 orthopedic hand consults from 2002 to 2010. Patients were included if our ED was the patient's second ED evaluation within 30 days for the same complaint. Demographics, diagnosis, referral instructions from the initial instit…

Hand, wrist and forearm injuries are common presentations to the emergency department. There is a huge variation of severity from small lacerations involving only skin to extensive upper limb composite loss. There is no minor injury in upper limb trauma. Even the most trivial of wounds may be associated with major tendon or nerve damage which, if missed, may have life-long functional implications for the patient. Although this review concentrates on soft tissue injury and not bony injury, it is not possible to separate the two completely. It is important to realise that all fractures have a so

OBJECTIVE: Although several articles can be found on wrist trauma, a detailed literature search reveals limited articles that are focused specifically on penetrating puncture wounds of the wrist and the clinical approach to puncture-type penetrating wrist injuries. The number of penetrating injuries of the wrist has increased dramatically, especially since the widespread usage of the nail gun and staplegun technologies. The purpose of this article is not to analyze the approach to extensive wrist injuries and lacerations but how to evaluate and treat smaller puncture wounds that may potentiall…

This article reviews the basic characteristics of common fractures and dislocations in the hand and wrist. There is increasing recognition that fractures and dislocations of the hand and wrist can result in long-term pain and dysfunction. This article includes descriptions and, when helpful, classifications for these fractures with attention to those features that are of prognostic and therapeutic significance. With prompt recognition and proper characterization of these injuries, patients can be triaged to the orthopedic surgeon for early and more aggressive treatment.

Injury from overuse is an important and increasingly common problem in athletes and health-conscious people. The unaccustomed application of repetitive stress to any tissue may cause sufficient structural disruption to overcome that tissue's adaptive ability and thus cause injury without necessarily causing complete loss of function. The events leading to injury, as well as the level of stress required to incite them, may vary depending on the tissue and the individual. The pathway common to all tissues most likely involves microdamage to tissue collagen, combined with a direct or indirect eff

Incorrect hand tool designs can cause a variety of cumulative trauma disorders. Design elements of size, shape, texture, purpose, ease of operation, shock absorption, and weight must be properly applied in the design process to fulfill the physical safety needs of consumers and working people and to prevent the appearance of pathologic changes in the tissues of the hand and wrist.

Because of the complicated causes and variable clinical signs, closed injury of tendons at wrist is difficult to diagnosis and treat. Twenty-six cases of tendon ruptur were reported. Among them, 11 cases were caused by bone fracture or dislocation, 8 cases were caused by rheumatoid synovitis, 5 cases were caused by synovial tuberculosis, and 2 cases caused by other. The pathogenesis and clinical signs were analyzed. Twenty-three cases were treated by tendon transfer and 3 cases were treated by tendon transplantation. By average follow-up of 16 months (ranged 6 months to 4 years), the results w
