[Current status of management of omphalocele and gastroschisis].

Forty-five cases of gastroschisis and 85 of omphalocele were reviewed. The survival of gastroschisis has dramatically improved over the past 20 years, however, that of omphalocele still remained in the lower value, because the size of the defect and the presence of associated anomalies are prognostic factors. The primary fascial closure was first employed for the patients with gastroschisis and a silo chimney was used for limited cases. On the other hand, for the patients with omphalocele, primary closure was possible in 34 cases, silo chimney was used in 17, and 45 cases had nonoperative mana

Repair of gastroschisis with preservation of the umbilicus.

A simplified technique for the repair of gastroschisis without the need to excise the umbilicus or make a fascial incision has been developed. First, the abdominal wall is stretched and the viscera are reduced. Next, the skin and subcutaneous tissue are elevated from the fascia for 1.5 cm around the defect and the fascia is closed transversely with interrupted sutures. The skin is also closed transversely. The umbilical stump is left intact. Eight of nine consecutive patients with gastroschisis were able to undergo repair by this technique. The average hospital stay was 35.6 days. There were n

Primary actinomycosis of the abdominal wall.

Two cases of primary actinomycosis of the abdominal wall masquerading as abdominal wall tumours are presented. The interesting clinical presentation and the difficulty in diagnosis are discussed.

Gastroschisis--primary fascial closure. The goal for optimal management.

Since Raffensperger and Jona reported an 80% success rate with primary skin closure including a 16% rate of complete fascial closure in 24 patients with gastroschisis in 1974, primary fascial closure has been the author's preferred method. It has been possible to achieve complete fascial and skin closure in 17 of the last 21 patients (81%). Four infants in this series, one of whom was initially managed by another surgeon, were treated with brief application of a silon prosthesis with subsequent reduction and closure. The two keys to success of this method are thorough wash out of the meconium

Increased survival with new techniques in treatment of gastroschisis.

Since the opening of the Neonatology Unit, we have become the referral center for our area for problems in the newborn. In the past three years, we have treated five full-term and two premature infants with gastroschisis. There was one death in a premature infant. With an aggressive therapeutic approach and a new surgical technique, we have achieved an overall survival rate of greater than 85%. Primary closure was possible in three patients, with the remaining four being trreated in two stages. A modification of the Schuster silastic bag closure was first accomplished in those patients treated

Constant negative pressure: an adjunct in the treatment of gastroschisis.

Three cases of gastroschisis are described, managed surgically in the neonatal period by staged reduction employing a dacron reinforced silastic sac. All three cases were treated during the postoperative period with the application of constant negative pressure around the thorax and abdomen. Reduction of the eviscerated mass appeared to be accelerated and all three cases survived. The possible benefits of constant negative pressure around the thorax and abdomen in the treatment of gastroschisis are discussed.

[Unclear Abdominal Pain - Not Always a Gastroenterological Emergency].

History and admission findings An 84-year old patient with persistent atrial fibrillation and chronic renal failure received a subcutaneous injection with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) during a hospital stay. Over the course of her hospitalization, the patient developed abdominal pain. There was a marked hematoma at the injection site. A large tumor was palpable in the right abdominal quadrant. Examinations Due to the significant reduction in hemoglobin, we performed a CT-angiogram of the abdomen. Diagnosis We were able to visualize an intramuscular hematoma within the rectus abdominis m

3D Muscle Architecture of the Tongue of the White-bellied Pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) Reveals a Muscular Hydrostat.

The tongues of pangolins are among the more derived of other mammalian ant-eating specialists, extending nearly a body length to capture food. Pangolins pack portions of their hyolingual apparatus in their thoracoabdominal cavity. These muscles are responsible for protruding, retracting, and bracing the tongue through a large range of motion akin to that of muscular hydrostats. Using DiceCT and 3D muscle architectural modeling of a cadaveric Phataginus tricuspis (White-bellied pangolin), we show how the arrangement of muscle fascicles in a section of the thoracoabdominal portion of the tongue

The Effects of Resistance Exercise on the Cardiorespiratory Tissue of Rats with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) affects the cardiorespiratory system, causing an increase in the left ventricular mass in the heart and respiratory … nd diameter and thickness of the left ventricle. The diaphragm and the myocardial, intercostal, and abdominal muscles were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE). The histomorphometric analysis was performed using the ImageJ software to assess the cross-sectional area of muscles and the number of muscle fibers. Progressive resistance exercise promoted the hypertro …

The correlation between the MRI-evaluated ectopic fat accumulation and the incidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension depends on body mass index and waist circumference ratio.

The widespread presence of overweight and obesity increases with every decade, and the number of people with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 has doubled in the last 30 years. The aim of the study is to assess the correlation between MRI-evaluated ectopic fat accumulation in pancreas, skeletal muscles and liver and the incidence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension, depending on BMI and waist circumference ratio. This prospective study included 267 consecutive patients who were referred to abdominal MRI and underwent a standard clinical assessment with BMI and waist circumference ratio calculati
