The purpose of this study was (1) to determine the relationship between acoustic measures and auditory-perceptual dimensions of overall voice severity and pleasantness and (2) to evaluate the ability of acoustic and auditory-perceptual measures to discriminate normal from dysphonic voices. Thirty adult dysphonic speakers and six, age-matched normal control speakers were asked to provide oral reading samples of the Rainbow Passage. Acoustic analysis of the speech samples was used to identify abnormal phonatory events associated with dysphonia. The acoustic program calculated long-term average s

Both rate reduction and increased loudness reportedly are associated with an increase in the size of the articulatory-acoustic working space and improved acoustic distinctiveness for speakers with dysarthria. Improved intelligibility also has been reported. Few studies have directly compared rate and loudness effects for speakers with dysarthria, however, although rate reduction and increasing vocal loudness are common treatment techniques. In the current study, 15 speakers with dysarthria secondary to multiple sclerosis, 12 speakers with dysarthria secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD), and 1

Medulloblastoma is a common malignant central nervous system neoplasm found mainly in children. One the contrary, medulloblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle, the location of the tumor is very unusual. This is the the first case of the medullomyoblastoma, a rare form of medulloblastoma, occurring in the cerebellopontine angle. A 15-year-old boy experienced a sudden hearing loss in the left ear. Conservative medical treatment failed, and temporal MR imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass at the left cerebellopontine angle cistern and in the internal auditory canal; therefore, the l

In spite of strict safety regulations concerning firearm shooting, several hundred conscripts still suffer acute acoustical trauma (AAT) in the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) every year, resulting in symptoms such as tinnitus and/or hearing impairment. The causes leading to AAT, causative weapons and mode and level of hearing protection were analysed to find out why so many AATs still occur in the FDF. The material consisted of 119 patients of the total 163 AAT patients treated at the Central Military Hospital during the year 2000. In 87.5% of cases, the AATs occurred in unprotected ears. The mo

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sonographic brain studies are classically performed through the anterior fontanelle, but visualization of posterior supratentorial and infratentorial structures is poor with this approach. Posterior fontanelle sonography is recommended for better assessment of these structures. Our purpose was 1) to determine whether sonography of the brain through the posterior fontanelle (PF) improves visualization of brain lesions when added to the routine anterior fontanelle (AF) approach and 2) to describe standardized PF coronal and sagittal sections.
METHODS: In this prospective

Ebselen (2-phenyl-1,2-benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one), a seleno-organic compound, mimics glutathione peroxidase and reacts with peroxynitrite. It is reported to protect against gentamicin- and cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. We investigated whether it protects the cochlea from acoustic trauma. Male pigmented guinea pigs (250-300 g) with normal auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were exposed for 5 h to 125 dB sound pressure level octave band noise centered at 4 kHz. One hour before and 18 h after exposure, they received orally 0.25 ml chloroform solution containing 0, 10, or 30 mg/kg ebsel

Comparative functional and morphological tests were performed in two groups of impulse noise-exposed guinea pigs treated either with magnesium (Mg) or isotonic saline as a placebo to extend the knowledge on the therapeutic efficacy of Mg in acoustic trauma demonstrated recently. The permanent threshold shifts were significantly lower in the Mg than in the placebo group as measured by auditory brainstem response audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions and compound action potentials (CAPs) 1 week after exposure. This also applies to the damage to hair cell stereocilia tested with sc

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies conducted with young adults have shown that ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds improve with an increase in the click-rate. Older adults also show an improvement in acoustic reflex thresholds with an increase in the click-rate. However, the click-rate induced facilitation (RIF) of acoustic reflex thresholds is significantly reduced in older adults. These results suggest that slower temporal processing in older adults can be documented by measuring the click-RIF of acoustic reflex thresholds. Thus, the click-RIF of acoustic reflex thresholds may prove to be a valu

BACKGROUND: Partisan claims supporting the use of microsurgical resection, radiologic surveillance, and radiosurgery in acoustic neuroma management appear widely in the published literature. However, the strength of the evidence supporting these claims has not been assessed, and the management of acoustic tumors continues to be controversial.
METHODS: The English-language medical literature for the past 23 years was searched for articles dealing with outcomes after acoustic neuroma management. The quality of evidence in each article was classified according to the categories of evidence as de

INTRODUCTION: Acoustic neurinoma presenting as massive intratumoural hemorrhage is quite an uncommon entity, with less than 40 clinical reports in the literature. Secondary mass effect compressing the brain stem may be a life threatening condition.
CASE REPORT: A 38 years old male was admitted at our hospital with several cranial nerve palsies on the right side and decreased level of consciousness (GCS 5) of acute onset. On cranial computed tomography a great haematoma was found in the right cerebello pontine angle, appearing to be an intratumoural bleeding. Emergency surgery was performed wi

The principal objectives of acoustic neuroma surgery in the order of priority are absence of mortality and neurological morbidity, total removal of the lesion, preservation of facial function, and preservation of hearing. The aim of this work was to evaluate the selection criteria and the therapeutic strategy for hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma management. This retrospective study included 436 consecutive patients referred to our department for an acoustic neuroma. The population comprised 365 patients (84%) treated surgically, 66 patients (15%) managed conservatively, and 5 irradiate
