HIV in Eswatini: Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review assessed the impact of climate change on HIV transmission and HIV care of children and adults in Eswatini, and what adaptation strategies can mitigate these impacts. RECENT FINDINGS: The HIV crisis in Eswatini persists alongside the climate emergency, increasing poor health outcomes in individuals living with HIV. Although there is no clinical evidence of a direct influence of climate change on the biological effect of HIV, changing weather patterns have an effect on the livelihoods and sustenance of children, adults, and caregivers, which may consequently incre

Pattern of bioterrorism in ancient times: lessons to be learned from the microbial and toxicological aspects.

The current research aimed to analyze the history of bioterrorism in antiquity and to adapt the data to modern medical knowledge. To this end, a thorough evaluation of the literature related to the ancient history of bioterrorism and modern data was done using the Web of Sciences, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results showed that knowledge of bioterrorism has existed since antiquity in different civilizations. Biological and toxicological agents were used as an instrument of legal execution, as a warfare tool in battles, or to eliminate political rivals across nations. An

Profiles of Risk, Allostatic Load, and Mental Health in Low-Income Children.

Most health disparities originate in childhood and extend across the lifespan. However, studies on health disparities have been predominately focused on adults. This study evaluated the biological and psychosocial consequences of exposure to chronic adversity among 491 low-income children 8 to 12 years old (52.1% male; M age = 9.73, SD = 1.0; 68.2% Black/African American; 21.2% Latinx; 267 maltreated and 224 nonmaltreated). Latent profile analyses revealed six distinct profiles of cumulative socioeconomic risk, allostatic load, and mental health functioning. Childhood maltreatment, emotion reg

Rapid activation of distinct members of multigene families in Plasmodium spp.

The genomes of Plasmodium spp. encode a number of different multigene families that are thought to play a critical role for survival. However, with the exception of the P. falciparum var genes, very little is known about the biological roles of any of the other multigene families. Using the recently developed Selection Linked Integration method, we have been able to activate the expression of a single member of a multigene family of our choice in Plasmodium spp. from its endogenous promoter. We demonstrate the usefulness of this approach by activating the expression of a unique var, rifin and

MicroRNAs in Uteroplacental Vascular Dysfunction.

Pregnancy complications of preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are major causes of maternal and perinatal/neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although their etiologies remain elusive, it is generally accepted that they are secondary to placental insufficiency conferred by both failure in spiral artery remodeling and uteroplacental vascular malfunction. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small no-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Increasing evidence suggests that miRNAs participate in virtually all biological processes and are involved i

Intestinal transcriptional profiling reveals fava bean-induced immune response in DBA/1 mice.

BACKGROUND: Fava beans (FBs) have long been used as food, and their principal disadvantage is derived from their haemotoxicity. We hypothesized that FB ingestion alters the intestinal gene expression pattern, thereby inducing an immune response. RESULTS: In-depth sequence analysis identified 769 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with the intestine in FB-treated DBA/1 mouse intestines. The identified genes were shown to be associated with biological processes (such as response to stimulus and immune system processes), human disease pathways (such as infectious diseases, endocrin

Flow Cytometry Analysis of Fungal Ploidy.

Ploidy, the number of sets of homologous chromosomes in a cell, can alter cellular physiology, gene regulation, and the spectrum of acquired mutations. Advances in single-cell flow cytometry have greatly improved the understanding of how genome size contributes to diverse biological processes including speciation, adaptation, pathogenesis, and tumorigenesis. For example, fungal pathogens can undergo whole genome duplications during infection of the human host and during acquisition of antifungal drug resistance. Quantification of ploidy is dramatically affected by the nucleic acid staining tec

Echinococcus granulosus antigen B: a Hydrophobic Ligand Binding Protein at the host-parasite interface.

Lipids are mainly solubilized by various families of lipid binding proteins which participate in their transport between tissues as well as cell compartments. Among these families, Hydrophobic Ligand Binding Proteins (HLBPs) deserve special consideration since they comprise intracellular and extracellular members, are able to bind a variety of fatty acids, retinoids and some sterols, and are present exclusively in cestodes. Since these parasites have lost catabolic and biosynthetic pathways for fatty acids and cholesterol, HLBPs are likely relevant for lipid uptake and transportation between p

[Biological and physico-chemical properties of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis bacterial culture having the fra-operon Yersinia pestis].

The biological and physico-chemical properties of cultures of two isogenous recombinant variants of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis were studied. The cell genomes of the cultures are distinguished from one another only by the presence or by the absence of the fra-operon, which is a determined attribute of the plague microbe capsule-forming process. The expression of the attribute is amplified by rising the microbial biomass cultivation temperature and stimulates the decrease in the viability of the bacteria and adaptation potential in vitro. In the warm-blooded owner organism the microbes of the c

In search of different categories of abstract concepts: a fMRI adaptation study.

Concrete conceptual knowledge is supported by a distributed neural network representing different semantic features according to the neuroanatomy of sensory and motor systems. If and how this framework applies to abstract knowledge is currently debated. Here we investigated the specific brain correlates of different abstract categories. After a systematic a priori selection of brain regions involved in semantic cognition, i.e. responsible of, respectively, semantic representations and cognitive control, we used a fMRI-adaptation paradigm with a passive reading task, in order to modulate the ne

Exercise-induced epigenetic remodeling in COPD skeletal muscle dysfunction: From sedentary behavior to molecular rehabilitation.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder in which extrapulmonary manifestations substantially contribute to disease burden. Among these, skeletal muscle dysfunction (SMD) represents a major determinant of exercise intolerance, reduced physical activity, impaired quality of life, and mortality. Growing evidence suggests that physical inactivity is not merely a consequence of advanced COPD but may act as an early and potentially modifiable driver of skeletal muscle deterioration, being detectable even in patients with mild disease and pote

Sweat glands in action: the role of biological and environmental factors, exercise, and dermatologic conditions in sudomotor function.

Sweating is the primary mechanism for human thermoregulation, driven by eccrine gland activity under central and peripheral sudomotor control. In this review, we synthesize evidence showing that sudomotor function is shaped by biological traits (age, sex, ethnicity/ancestry), environmental exposures (regional climate, seasonality, and migration), and individual modifiers (exercise training and dermatologic disease). Environmental heat exposure induces heat adaptation, leading to short-term and long-term acclimation with contrasting effects. Short-term acclimation enhances sweat gland sensitivi

Human Data First: New Biological Premises for Arteriovenous Fistula Research.

Achieving a mature arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for hemodialysis remains a significant challenge, even for the most experienced vascular surgeons. Despite decades of research, ≈40% of new AVFs require salvage interventions or can never be used for dialysis. All clinical trials aimed at improving early AVF maturation have failed. This underscores the limitations of the existing biological model, which continues to frame stenosis through a reductionist lens centered on intimal hyperplasia, despite emerging evidence that this explanation is insufficient. This review seeks to redefine the biologica

Bio-inspired terrain perception for snake robots: spectral analysis of vertical undulation and sidewinding.

While snake robots offer exceptional potential for exploration in confined and unstructured environments, their capacity for active adaptation is currently hindered by a lack of robust terrain classification. Inspired by the mechanosensory perception of biological snakes, this study proposes a proprioceptive terrain classification framework relying solely on a single uniaxial accelerometer. To capture the coupled robot-terrain interaction dynamics from the complex, non-stationary signals inherent in floating-base locomotion, we introduce the band-limited spectral magnitude feature, which quant

Photocontrolled biomimetic PEEK scaffold with black phosphorus-strontium ion cascade release for vascularized bone regeneration.

Effective repair of large bone defects poses a major clinical challenge. Traditional 3D printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds provide customized structures and mechanical adaptability. However, their biological inertness and lack of dynamic bioactive microenvironment limit vascular regeneration and osteogenic differentiation, ultimately limiting overall bone regeneration. This study combined photothermal responsive black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) with strontium ions (Sr2+), and further modified the combination with polydopamine (PDA) to construct 'PDA@BP-Sr Nanocomposites'; subsequ

A parametric survival model with bayesian structural equation based on multi-omics integration.

BACKGROUND: Multi-omics integration may provide additional information about the development of tumors and improve the performance of predictive models. The key challenge lies in integrating several omics sources, especially to capture their biological relationships. Previous studies proposed a structural equation model framework to combine two data platforms for predicting survival; however, several limitations remain. RESULTS: In this study, we introduce an extended Bayesian survival model combined with a structural equation model for adaptation to broader applications. The No U-turn Sampli

Seasonal Stability Assessment of Reference Genes for Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Normalization in Bombus terrestris.

Bumblebees (B. terrestris) play a crucial role as highly efficient biological agents in commercial pollination. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing their adaptation to diverse seasonal environments may pave the way for effective management strategies in the future. With the burgeoning advancement in post-genetic studies focusing on B. terrestris, there is a critical need to normalize quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) data using suitable reference genes. To address this necessity, we employed RefFinder, a software-based tool, to assess the suitability of several candidate endoge
