Genetic diversity and molecular diagnosis of Giardia.

Giardia is a genus of flagellated protozoan parasites that infect the small intestine of humans and animals, causing the diarrheal illness known as giardiasis. Giardia exhibits significant genetic diversity among its isolates, which can have important implications for disease transmission and clinical presentation. This diversity is influenced by the coevolution of Giardia with its host, resulting in the development of unique genetic assemblages with distinct phenotypic characteristics. Although panmixia has not been observed, some assemblages appear to have a broader host range and exhibit hi

The multifactor pelvis: An alternative to the adaptationist approach of the obstetrical dilemma.

The obstetrical dilemma describes the competing demands that a bipedally adapted pelvis and a large-brained neonate place on human childbirth and is the predominant model within which hypotheses about the evolution of the pelvis are framed. I argue the obstetrical dilemma follows the adaptationist program outlined by Gould and Lewontin in 1979 and should be replaced with a new model, the multifactor pelvis. This change will allow thorough consideration of nonadaptive explanations for the evolution of the human pelvis and avoid negative social impacts from considering human childbirth inherentl

Menstrual Cycle and Sport Injuries: A Systematic Review.

The presence of female athletes has only increased in recent years, as has the incidence of injuries in female sports activities. These injuries are conditioned by multiple factors, including hormonal agents. It is estimated that the menstrual cycle may be related to the predisposition to suffer an injury. However, a causal relationship has not yet been established. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the menstrual cycle and injuries in female sports practice. A systematic search of the scientific literature available in PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Sp

Distinct Brain Mechanisms for Conflict Adaptation within and across Conflict Types.

Cognitive conflict, like other cognitive processes, shows the characteristic of adaptation, that is, conflict effects are attenuated when immediately following a conflicting event, a phenomenon known as the conflict adaptation effect (CAE). One important aspect of CAE is its sensitivity to the intertrial coherence of conflict type, that is, behavioral CAE occurs only if consecutive trials are of the same conflict type. Although reliably observed behaviorally, the neural mechanisms underlying such a phenomenon remains elusive. With a paradigm combining the classic Simon task and Stroop task, th

Accelerated QT adaptation following atropine-induced heart rate increase in LQT1 patients versus healthy controls: A sign of disturbed hysteresis.

Hysteresis, a ubiquitous regulatory phenomenon, is a salient feature of the adaptation of ventricular repolarization duration to heart rate (HR) change. We therefore compared the QT interval adaptation to rapid HR increase in patients with the long QT syndrome type 1 (LQT1) versus healthy controls because LQT1 is caused by loss-of-function mutations affecting the repolarizing potassium channel current IKs , presumably an important player in QT hysteresis. The study was performed in an outpatient hospital setting. HR was increased in LQT1 patients and controls by administering an intravenous bo

Evolutionary History and Strength of Selection Determine the Rate of Antibiotic Resistance Adaptation.

Bacterial adaptation to stressful environments often produces evolutionary constraints whereby increases in resistance are associated with reduced fitness in a different environment. The exploitation of this resistance-cost trade-off has been proposed as the basis of rational antimicrobial treatment strategies designed to limit the evolution of drug resistance in bacterial pathogens. Recent theoretical, laboratory, and clinical studies have shown that fluctuating selection can maintain drug efficacy and even restore drug susceptibility, but can also increase the rate of adaptation and promote

Underlying mechanisms of fall risk on stairs with inconsistent going size.

Serious falls occur frequently on stairs with inconsistent dimensions. Inconsistent smaller goings are thought to reduce user's foot clearances and foot contact lengths since individuals do not detect and alter their behaviour prior to the inconsistency, increasing the risk of a trip, heel-catch or over-step and potential slip on the stairs. So far, these mechanisms for a stair fall remain theoretical only. The aim of this paper was to identify the underlying mechanisms by which steps with inconsistent going size increase the risk of falls. For this study twenty-seven younger adults (24 ± 3 y,

Influence of panoramic cues during prolonged roll-tilt adaptation on the percept of vertical.

The percept of vertical, which mainly relies on vestibular and visual cues, is known to be affected after sustained whole-body roll tilt, mostly at roll positions adjacent to the position of adaptation. Here we ask whether the viewing of panoramic visual cues during the adaptation further influences the percept of the visual vertical. Participants were rotated in the frontal plane to a 90° clockwise tilt position, which was maintained for 4-minutes. During this period, the subject was either kept in darkness, or viewed panoramic pictures that were either veridical (aligned with gravity) or ori

The effects of endogenously- and exogenously-induced hyperketonemia on exercise performance and adaptation.

Elevating blood ketones may enhance exercise capacity and modulate adaptations to exercise training; however, these effects may depend on whether hyperketonemia is induced endogenously through dietary carbohydrate restriction, or exogenously through ketone supplementation. To determine this, we compared the effects of endogenously- and exogenously-induced hyperketonemia on exercise capacity and adaptation. Trained endurance athletes undertook 6 days of laboratory based cycling ("race") whilst following either: a carbohydrate-rich control diet (n = 7; CHO); a carbohydrate-rich diet + ketone dri

Phenotypic plasticity to chronic cold exposure in two species of Peromyscus from different environments.

Effective thermoregulation is important for mammals, particularly those that remain winter-active. Adjustments in thermoregulatory capacity in response to chronic cold can improve capacities for metabolic heat production (cold-induced maximal oxygen consumption, [Formula: see text]), minimize rates of heat loss (thermal conductance), or both. This can be challenging for animals living in chronically colder habitats where necessary resources (i.e., food, O2) for metabolic heat production are limited. Here we used lowland native white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and highland deer mice (P.

Gait control to step into a lowered surface with one limb with different demands for accuracy in younger and older adults.

Walking in a daily life context requires constant adaptations to meet the environment's requirements for successful locomotion. We investigated the walking adaptations of younger and older adults when dealing with holes of different lengths in the pathway (60-cm long and 1.3 times foot length [critical point] conditions). We used the critical point condition to increase the demand for accuracy as it reduces the safety margin between the foot and the borders of the hole. Fifteen younger and fifteen older adults walked barefoot on a wooden walkway in three conditions: no-hole, 60-cm hole (length

Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed omnivorous adaptation of the small intestine of Melinae.

As the main digestive organ, the small intestine plays a vital role in the digestion of animals. At present, most of the research on animal feeding habits focuses on carnivores and herbivores. However, the mechanism of feeding and digestion in omnivores remains unclear. This study aims to reveal the molecular basis of the omnivorous adaptive evolution of Melinae by comparing the transcriptome of the small intestines of Asian Badgers (Meles leucurus) and Northern Hog Badgers (Arctonyx albogularis). We obtained high-quality small intestinal transcriptome data from these two species. Key genes an

Interlimb Transfer of Reach Adaptation Does Not Require an Intact Corpus Callosum: Evidence from Patients with Callosal Lesions and Agenesis.

Generalization of sensorimotor adaptation across limbs, known as interlimb transfer, is a well-demonstrated phenomenon in humans, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Theoretical models suggest that interlimb transfer is mediated by interhemispheric transfer of information via the corpus callosum. We thus hypothesized that lesions of the corpus callosum, especially to its midbody connecting motor, supplementary motor, and premotor areas of the two cerebral hemispheres, would impair interlimb transfer of sensorimotor adaptation. To test this hypothesis, we recruited three patien

Selection shapes the landscape of functional variation in wild house mice.

BACKGROUND: Through human-aided dispersal over the last ~ 10,000 years, house mice (Mus musculus) have recently colonized diverse habitats across the globe, promoting the emergence of new traits that confer adaptive advantages in distinct environments. Despite their status as the premier mammalian model system, the impact of this demographic and selective history on the global patterning of disease-relevant trait variation in wild mouse populations is poorly understood. RESULTS: Here, we leveraged 154 whole-genome sequences from diverse wild house mouse populations to survey the geographic or

Silent Synapses in Cocaine-Associated Memory and Beyond.

Glutamatergic synapses are key cellular sites where cocaine experience creates memory traces that subsequently promote cocaine craving and seeking. In addition to making across-the-board synaptic adaptations, cocaine experience also generates a discrete population of new synapses that selectively encode cocaine memories. These new synapses are glutamatergic synapses that lack functionally stable AMPARs, often referred to as AMPAR-silent synapses or, simply, silent synapses. They are generated de novo in the NAc by cocaine experience. After drug withdrawal, some of these synapses mature by recr

Effects of temperature and food availability on liver fatty acid composition and plasma cortisol concentration in age-0 lake sturgeon: Support for homeoviscous adaptation.

Overwintering survival in north temperate fishes involves a series of adaptive responses to multiple environmental stressors. Homeoviscous adaptation includes changes in membrane lipid composition in response to reduced environmental temperature, which may be driven by changes in hormones involved in the endocrine stress response. We examined how reduced temperature and food availability may act in concert to influence hepatic fatty acid composition of phospholipids and triglycerides, in addition to plasma concentration of cortisol in age-0 lake sturgeon (A. fulvescens). At 153 days post hatch

Rapid and reversible modulation of blood haemoglobin content during diel cycles of hypoxia in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus).

We investigated whether fish can make dynamic haematological adjustments to support aerobic metabolism during repeated cycles of hypoxia-reoxygenation. Killifish were acclimated to normoxia, constant hypoxia (2 kPa O2), or intermittent cycles of nocturnal hypoxia (12 h of normoxia: 12 h of 2 kPa O2 hypoxia) for 28 days. Normoxia-acclimated fish were sampled in the daytime in normoxia and after exposure to a single bout of nocturnal hypoxia. Each hypoxia acclimation group were sampled at the PO2 experienced during acclimation during both the day and night. All acclimation groups had increased b

The Riveting Cellular Structures of Apicomplexan Parasites.

Parasitic protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa cause a range of human and animal diseases. Their complex life cycles - often heteroxenous with sexual and asexual phases in different hosts - rely on elaborate cytoskeletal structures to enable morphogenesis and motility, organize cell division, and withstand diverse environmental forces. This review primarily focuses on studies using Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium spp. as the best studied apicomplexans; however, many cytoskeletal adaptations are broadly conserved and predate the emergence of the parasitic phylum. After decades cataloguing the co
