Effects of different types of physical activities on self-esteem in typically developing children and adolescents: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Amid the escalating global mental health crisis among children and adolescents, low self-esteem has been recognized as a pivotal risk factor for the onset of psychological difficulties. Developing interventions that are both cost-effective and widely accessible to enhance self-esteem carries substantial public health significance. The present study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of various forms of physical activity on self-esteem in typically developing children and adolescents, and to establish a comparative ranking of their effectiveness. METHODS: Following the PRI

Development of a Virtual Transition Program for Adolescents and Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Three-Stage User-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face a heightened risk of care gaps and preventable complications during the transition from pediatric to adult care. AYAs from low-income families are more likely to experience poor outcomes. Care guidelines for T1D now recommend a transition program beginning several years prior to anticipated independence. However, existing transition programs often require substantial resources, limiting their scalability and accessibility. OBJECTIVE: We used a human-centered design approach to develop and refine a low-cost, virtua

Developing and Testing Electronic Versions of the Advance QoL Tools for Collecting Self-Reports of Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents With Advanced Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: To provide appropriate interventions for young people with advanced cancer, self-reported questionnaires assessing quality of life (QoL) are crucial. This study aims to develop and test electronic versions of two short self-reported questionnaires (for children aged 8-12 and adolescents aged 13-18). METHODS: We adapted the paper-and-pencil versions of Advance QoL into electronic versions using the REDCap platform. We tested the electronic versions and evaluated their social validity (acceptability, relevance, and satisfaction) through semi-structured cognitive interviews with 20

The risk of developing cardiovascular diseases based on the determination of VEGF, MMP-9 and visfatin concentrations in adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder that affects many women, including adolescents, around the world. While PCOS is primarily known for its reproductive and metabolic implications, growing evidence suggests that it is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of the study was to evaluate the concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and visfatin in adolescent girls with PCOS in respect to their central obesity status. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six PCOS patie

Development and validation of the Japanese version of Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4-Revised (SATAQ-4R) among Japanese adolescents.

PURPOSE: Internalization of appearance ideals and sociocultural pressures contribute to body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. Japanese adolescents report high levels of body dissatisfaction despite relatively low body mass index compared to peers in other countries, highlighting potential cultural influences. However, the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4-Revised (SATAQ-4R) has not been validated in Japan. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the SATAQ-4R and examine its psychometric properties among Japanese adolescents. METHODS: A nationwide popula

Development and validation of a Solution-Focused Group Therapy program for interpersonal relationships in adolescents with anxiety and depression: a Delphi-based consensus study.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a standardized, de-pathologized Solution-Focused Group Therapy (SFGT) program specifically designed to address interpersonal dysfunctions among Chinese adolescents with anxiety and depression. METHODS: A two-round Delphi method was employed to integrate multidisciplinary perspectives. An initial set of intervention components was developed based on the systematic literature review and semi-structured interviews with 10 frontline practitioners. This was followed by two iterative evaluation rounds involving a purposive panel of 20 experts in psychiatry, clini

Centile curves of refraction in children and adolescents aged 5-18 in Hubei Province: a study based on GAMLSS to predict refraction development.

AIM: To establish percentile curves of refractive development for children and adolescents aged 5-18y in Hubei Province. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 103 county-level administrative districts of Hubei Province via a multistage stratified cluster sampling strategy. Participants underwent non-cycloplegic autorefraction, and spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of the right eye was calculated. Generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) were applied to construct age-specific standard SER percentile curves stratified by gender and region. Moreover, ag

Development and Validation of the CHDSI Questionnaire: A New Tool for Measuring Disease-Specific Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Congenital Heart Defects.

Background and Objectives: Congenital heart defects (CHD) affect around 1% of the population, making them the most common congenital disease worldwide. Thanks to advances in treatment, over 90% of affected children are able to reach adulthood, shifting focus to long-term outcomes such as disease-specific quality of life (DsQoL). To date, there has been no validated, standardized instrument for assessing DsQoL in young German CHD patients. This study introduces the Congenital Heart Disease Specific Inventory (CHDSI), the first freely available German-language instrument for measuring DsQoL in c

Maternal thyroid function in the first half of pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in early adolescence in the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohort.

Maternal thyroid hormone levels in pregnancy have been implicated to play a role in brain development, but few observational studies have examined their relationship with neurodevelopmental outcomes beyond early childhood. We investigated associations between maternal thyroid function during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in 1824 children aged 10-13 years from the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohort. Outcomes included neurocognition (non-verbal intelligence [Raven's Progressive Matrices], executive working memory [SOPT]), behavioural org

The association of unconventional natural gas development with diagnosis and treatment of internalizing disorders among adolescents in Pennsylvania using electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Unconventional natural gas development (UNGD) introduces physical and psychosocial hazards into communities, which could contribute to psychosocial stress in adolescents and an increased risk of internalizing disorders, common and impactful health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate associations between a 180-day composite UNGD activity metric and new onset of internalizing disorders, overall and separately for anxiety and depressive disorders, and effect modification by sex. METHODS: We used a nested case-control design from 2008 to 2016 in 38 Pennsylvania counties using electroni

Development of the Cerebral Cortex across Adolescence: A Multisample Study of Inter-Related Longitudinal Changes in Cortical Volume, Surface Area, and Thickness.

Before we can assess and interpret how developmental changes in human brain structure relate to cognition, affect, and motivation, and how these processes are perturbed in clinical or at-risk populations, we must first precisely understand typical brain development and how changes in different structural components relate to each other. We conducted a multisample magnetic resonance imaging study to investigate the development of cortical volume, surface area, and thickness, as well as their inter-relationships, from late childhood to early adulthood (7-29 years) using four separate longitudina

Which adolescents develop persistent substance dependence in adulthood? Using population-representative longitudinal data to inform universal risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, there are no universal screening tools for substance dependence that (1) were developed using a population-based sample, (2) estimate total risk briefly and inexpensively by incorporating a relatively small number of well-established risk factors, and (3) aggregate risk factors using a simple algorithm. We created a universal screening tool that incorporates these features to identify adolescents at risk for persistent substance dependence in adulthood. METHOD: Participants were members of a representative cohort of 1037 individuals born in Dunedin, New Zealand i

Development of substance use and psychiatric comorbidity in an epidemiologic study of white and American Indian young adolescents the Great Smoky Mountains Study.

The progression of substance use and the patterns of comorbidity of substance use and psychiatric disorders are explored prospectively in young adolescents enrolled in the Great Smoky Mountains Study. This study is an epidemiologic study of white and American Indian youths living in rural Southern Appalachia. Results from this study indicate that alcohol use without permission predicts subsequent use of illicit drugs and regular tobacco use. Use of tobacco was not associated with either later alcohol or drug use. Patterns of comorbidity showed strong cross-sectional relationships between subst

[Late sequelae of comprehensive antineoplastic therapy in children and adolescents with solid extracranial tumors. Effect on growth, pubertal development and gonadal function].

BACKGROUND: Modern treatment of oncological diseases increases markedly the chance of long-term survival and permanent recovery. Due to frequently highly aggressive treatment it is however associated with the risk of late sequelae in the surviving patients. Comprehensive care of patients includes therefore not only control of the neoplastic disease but also efforts of maximal improvement of the quality of life of the patients. In young subjects, in view of their long-term perspective, this problem is particularly important. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 32 patients (25 boys and 7 girls) with extrac

Socioeconomic disadvantage accounts for most of the early childhood development gap among children of adolescent mothers: A cross-national analysis of 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Children of adolescent mothers face elevated risks of early childhood development (ECD) delay. Whether this reflects maternal age or the socioeconomic disadvantage that predisposes young women to early childbearing remains debated. We conducted a secondary analysis of Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data (rounds 5 and 6, 2013-2022) from 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries, comprising 23,650 children aged 36-59 months. Using survey-weighted regression with cluster-robust standard errors, we examined associations between adolescent motherhood and ECD scores, discipline practices, and bel
