Pelvic floor biometry during a first singleton pregnancy and the relationship with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders: a prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess pelvic floor biometry during pregnancy and the correlation with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders in women. DESIGN: A prospective observational study. SETTING: Antenatal clinic between August 2009 and May 2011. POPULATION: Nulliparous women in their first pregnancy. METHODS: Pelvic floor was assessed by translabial ultrasound and symptoms of pelvic floor disorders were explored with a standardised questionnaire at each trimester. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pelvic floor biometry during pregnancy. RESULTS: A total of 405 (91.6%) women completed the study. As the pregnancy

Trisomy 20 mosaicism and nonmosaic trisomy 20: a report of 2 cases.

BACKGROUND: Together with chromosome 19, chromosome 20 belongs to group F, the group of small metacentric chromosomes. Trisomy 20 mosaicism … c histories were unremarkable. Genetic amniocentesis was performed in the 18th gestational week for advanced maternal age. Sample analysis revealed a normal, male karyotype in 27 mitoses, while 4 were trisomy 20 (46,XY [27]/47,XY, +20 [4]). Low birth weight (LBW) infants' exploratory behavior at 12 and 24 months: effects of intraventricular hemorrhage and mothers' attention directing behaviors.

Medically high-risk (HR), low birth weight (LBW) preterm infants (n = 11) with significant degrees of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) were seen at 12 and 24 months of age. This HR group was compared with a low-risk (LR) LBW preterm group (n = 16) with respiratory distress syndrome or mild grades of IVH, and a normal full-term (FT) group (n = 12). Infants and their mothers were observed in a 10-min toy-centered play interaction to determine if more advanced exploratory play occurred in association with specific maternal attention-directing behaviors. Results showed that the FT infants were ab

Influence of maternal and perinatal factors on macronutrient content of very preterm human milk during the first weeks after birth.

OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in macronutrient content of very preterm human milk associated with perinatal factors. STUDY DESIGN: Milk macronutrients were measured on weeks 1, 2, 4 and 8 with mid-infrared transmission spectrometers. RESULT: We assessed 625 samples (from 117 mothers and 130 very preterm infants). Average concentrations were: protein 1.3 ± 0.3 g/dl, carbohydrates 7.3 ± 0.6 g/dl, fat 3.7 ± 1.0 g/dl and energy 296.0 ± 41.0 kJ/dl (70.7 kcal/dl). Gestational age negatively correlated with protein (rho: -0.307, p < 0.001) and energy (r: -0.193, p = 0.003). Advanced maternal age, …

Establishment of a nomogram model for predicting adverse outcomes in advanced-age pregnant women with preterm preeclampsia.

AIM: To establish a model for predicting adverse outcomes in advanced-age pregnant women with preterm preeclampsia in China. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the medical records of 896 pregnant women with preterm preeclampsia who were older than 35 years and delivered at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from June 2018 to December 2020. The pregnant women were divided into an adverse outcome group and a non-adverse outcome group according to the occurrence of adverse outcomes. Prenatal diagnosis of low-level mosaicism for trisomy 21 by amniocentesis in a pregnancy associated with maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 21 in the fetus and a favorable outcome.

OBJECTIVE: We present perinatal molecular cytogenetic analysis of low-level mosaicism for trisomy 21 in a pregnancy with maternal uniparental disomy (UPD) of chromosome 21 in the fetus. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old woman underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 47,XX,+21[6]/46,XX[25]. Pregnancy outcome in elderly primigravidae.

BACKGROUND: As women increasingly delay child bearing, the proportion of women having their first delivery at ''advanced maternal age'' is expected to rise. These elderly primigravidae have traditionally been considered to be at increased risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes because of associated pregnancy and labor complications and, therefore, need to be evaluated. AIM: To determine the prevalence of elderly primigravidae and compare their pregnancy outcome with that in younger primigravid mothers in Port Harcourt. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a two-year retrospective case-cont…

Risk factors predisposing to abruptio placentae. Maternal and fetal outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Abruptio placentae is one of the leading causes of perinatal deaths. Abruptio placentae increase the neonatal morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to examine the risk factors for abruptio placentae together with the maternal and fetal outcome in a large population based data set. METHODS: All cases of abruptio placentae presented to the Department of Obstetrics, Wad Medani Teaching Hospital, Sudan during the period January 1997 through to December 2002 were collected. Psychobiological influences on maternal sensitivity in the context of adversity.

This study evaluated prospective longitudinal relations among an index of poverty-related cumulative risk, maternal salivary cortisol, child negative affect, and maternal sensitivity across the first 2 postpartum years. Participants included 1,180 biological mothers residing in rural and predominantly low-income communities in the United States. Multilevel growth curve analyses indicated that an index of cumulative risk was positively associated with maternal cortisol across the postpartum (study visits occurring at approximately 7, 15, and 24 months postpartum) over and above effects for Afri

The impact of exercise and probiotic supplementation on the gut microbiota and management of gestational diabetes mellitus: a critical review.

This review provides a critical overview of the impact of exercise and probiotic supplementation in the management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). As the prevalence of GDM is rising due to increasing maternal weight and advancing age, the need for research into possible adjunctive therapies is crucial. GDM poses significant maternal-fetal risks, including macrosomia and pre-eclampsia, highlighting the importance of glycemic control in pregnancy. The gut microbiota is also important in metabolic health, with enhanced diversity increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, which p
