Electrophysiological examination of the representation of the face in the suprasylvian gyrus of the ferret: a correlative study with cytoarchitecture.

Using high-resolution microelectrode mapping methods, we explored the organization of the face representation within the primary somatosensory cortex of ferrets, finding evidence for at least two and probably four representations of the face distributed consecutively from anterior to posterior along the long axis of the suprasylvian gyrus. Examination of the cytoarchitecture (Rice et al., this issue) revealed that these four areas corresponded to four different cytoarchitectonic fields within the crown of the suprasylvian gyrus. The two central, most completely defined representations were ori

Cells of origin of the spinoparabrachial fibers in the rat: a study with fast blue and WGA-HRP.

The internal lateral (IL) subnucleus of the parabrachial nucleus (PB), which is one of the seven lateral subnuclei of the PB, receives information from the spinal cord. The IL subnucleus perhaps relays nociceptive signals to the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus, apparently being implicated in the motivational-affective component of pain reaction. However, cells of origin of spinal fibers to the IL subnucleus have not been investigated sufficiently. We intended to clarify these cells by injection of fast blue or wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase into the IL subnucleus a

Dorsal root afferent influences on tonic firing of renal and mesenteric sympathetic nerves in rats.

After spinal cord transection in cats and rats, the activity of many sympathetic nerves is not entirely lost, and firing of other nerves continues unabated or is increased. This study was done to evaluate the importance of dorsal root afferent discharge on the generation of tonic sympathetic activity in renal and mesenteric postganglionic nerves in spinal rats and in rats with intact neuraxes. Sympathetic discharge was recorded in anesthetized rats, and peripheral afferent influences were eliminated by dorsal rhizotomy from T4 to L2. Activity of renal and mesenteric nerves was well maintained

Bone fracture induces reflex muscle atrophy which is sex-dependent.

Longlasting nociceptive stimulation is known to cause atrophy of adjacent muscles. The aim of this study was to determine further the possible mechanisms of this pathological phenomenon. Unilateral fracture of the paw was performed under pentobarbital anaesthesia in several experimental groups (n = 8-11) of female and male rats. Dry muscle weights of the soleus (SOL), extensor digitorum longus (EDL), gastrocnemius (GA) and tibialis anterior (TA) were determined 7 days following the bone fracture and compared to the weight of contralateral control muscles. To demonstrate the reflex origin of th

Central projections and motor nuclei of the facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves in the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii.

Most of the information about the anatomy of the fish's cranial nerves was collected in the first two decades of this century. Experimental analysis of the VIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial nerves by modern tract tracing techniques started about 20 years ago. Several species have been investigated to date, including one species of Agnatha (Myxinoidea), two species of elasmobranchs, and species of some orders of Teleostei like Cyprinidae, Siluriformes, Perciformes, and Gadidae. The sensory and motor nuclei of the VIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial nerves of Gnathonemus petersii were studied by anterograde

VIP-like immunoreactivity in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of a mutant anophthalmic mouse.

The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of mutant anophthalmic (strain ZRDCT-An) and sighted control mice was examined using light microscopic methods for cytoarchitecture and immunocytochemistry for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). The SCN of the anophthalmic mice were asymmetrical, and quite variable in cytoarchitecture. Immunocytochemistry for VIP revealed strong staining of cells and fibers. Within the SCN, the distribution of VIP-immunoreactive cells was more diffuse in anophthalmic mice than in the controls; immunoreactive neurons were frequently observed in ectopic locations in the mut

Cardiocardiac excitatory reflexes during myocardial ischemia.

Myocardial ischemia represents a stimulus capable of exciting the receptive endings of both the vagal and sympathetic sensory fibers which innervate the heart. As a consequence, multiple and simultaneous reflexes can occur, mediated by the vagal and the sympathetic afferent limbs which, in turn, can modify both the vagal and the sympathetic outflows. Reflexes mediated by vagal afferent fibers are predominantly inhibitory, while those mediated by sympathetic afferent fibers are largely excitatory. In the experimental laboratory the various reflexes can be artificially isolated and analyzed, whi

Afferent inhibition and facilitation of transmission through the spinocervical tract in the anaesthetized cat.

1. Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from single spinocervical tract (SCT) neurones in the lumbosacral spinal cord of cats anaesthetized with chloralose and paralysed with gallamine triethiodide. 2. Pairs of air-jet stimuli, 60 ms in duration, were used to investigate in-field afferent inhibition in SCT cells. One jet was used to condition the responses to another jet located at a different position within the excitatory receptive field and occurring at times from 100 to 1800 ms later. Fifteen neurones were tested and significant in-field inhibition was observed in all of them.

Effects of very early monocular and binocular enucleation on primary visual centers in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

The role of retinal afferents and their binocular interactions in the development of mammalian primary visual centers has been studied in the marsupial wallaby. Monocular and binocular enucleation was performed prior to any retinal innervation of the visual centers. After monocular enucleation retinal projections were traced by horseradish peroxidase histochemistry and compared with those in normal animals and those during development. The topography of retinal projections to the superior colliculus and the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus after monocular enucleation was determined by making

The masseter inhibitory reflex is evoked by innocuous stimuli and mediated by A beta afferent fibres.

Mechanical or electrical stimulations in the area of the mouth evoke two phases of inhibition in the masseter muscle (early and late inhibitory reflex, also called masseter silent periods). The question whether the afferents of the human masseter inhibitory reflex are nociceptive or non-nociceptive has not yet been settled. We showed that an innocuous stimulus, such as a fine jet of saline directed to the lips of healthy humans, evokes an early and a late masseter inhibitory reflex, similar to those following electrical stimulation. We measured the efferent and afferent delay of the masseter e

Cardiac and abdominal vagal afferent inhibition of primate T9-S1 spinothalamic cells.

Effects of electrically stimulating vagal afferents were determined on lumbosacral spinothalamic tract (STT) neurons in the T9-S1 segments. Stimulating left or right vagal afferents inhibited 20 (50%) and excited 4 (10%) of 40 STT neurons. Vagal stimulation reduced activity of the 20 inhibited cells by 71 +/- 6% and reduced the average activity of all 40 STT neurons by 28% from 11.5 +/- 1.3 to 8.3 +/- 1.4 impulses/s (P less than 0.01). Effects of activating thoracic and abdominal or just abdominal vagal afferents were also determined. Stimulating right abdominal vagal afferents inhibited 4 (11

Serotonin releasers modulate reactivity of the rat hippocampus to afferent stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of the perforant path produces a characteristic population EPSP and population spike in the dentate gyrus of the anesthetized rat. Parenteral administration of a serotonin releasing drug D-fenfluramine (FFA) caused a marked (30-100%) and highly significant increase in dentate gyrus population spike response to perforant path stimulation without affecting the slope of the population excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP). This indicates that FFA modifies granular cell excitability to afferent stimulation. The facilitatory effect of FFA was not present in rats depleted o

Tabes dorsalis: electrodiagnostic features.

Electrodiagnostic data have not been previously reported in tabes dorsalis. A patient with tabes dorsalis is described whose nerve conduction studies and median nerve somatosensory evoked responses (SEPs) were normal. H-reflexes were absent. SEPs of the tibial nerve suggested posterior column dysfunction. These electrodiagnostic findings correlate precisely with the known pathology of tabes dorsalis.

Ventilatory effects of stimulation of phrenic afferents.

The diaphragm, a ventilatory muscle, has abundant sensory innervation. The effects of phrenic afferent activation on ventilation have been varied. In this study the proximal end of the phrenic nerve was electrically stimulated, and the effects on ventilation were measured in supine dogs anesthetized with either alpha-chloralose or pentobarbital sodium. We found a maximum increase in ventilation of 45 +/- 4% in the alpha-chloralose group and an increase in mean arterial blood pressure of 18 +/- 4%. This response was obtained at high stimulus intensities (60 times twitch threshold). Stimulation

Second somatic sensory cortical area (SII) in a prosimian primate, Galago crassicaudatus.

The cortex adjacent to and along the upper bank of the lateral sulcus (UB-LS) of a prosimian primate, Galago crassicaudatus, was explored to determine the topographical representation of low-threshold cutaneous inputs to this region. The somatic sensory projections to this cortex were considered homologous to those defined in other species as the second somatosensory cortical area (SII). Multiple and single neuron recordings were obtained with tungsten microelectrodes in animals anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or ketamine hydrochloride; receptive fields were determined by means of manua

Somatosensory evoked potentials in the ventrolateral thalamus.

Within the target area (VL) used for the stereotactic treatment of parkinsonian tremor and spasmodic torticollis, electrical stimulation as well as recording of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) was performed. The effects of stimulation in the target area are facilitation of muscle tone showing some degree of somatotopic distribution. The recorded SEPs indicate a projection of an afferent system (probably of muscle afferents) to the target area. We assume that the target area is a relay station involved in the control of muscle tone. The interruption of muscle afferents in combination with

Brainstem origins and projections of the cervical and abdominal vagus in the golden hamster: a horseradish peroxidase study.

Vagal afferent projections, and preganglionic parasympathetic neurones contributing to the vagus nerve in golden hamsters were traced following application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the proximal end of the cervical or abdominal nerve stump. Efferents in the cervical vagus were traced to their perikarya or origin in the dorsal motor nucleus (DMN) of the vagus, the commissural gray of the cervical spinal cord, the nucleus ambiguus, the nucleus of the accessory spinal nerve (NASN), and in the ventral horn dorsolateral to the NASN. Perikarya in the NASN and the region dorsolateral to it d

[Peroxidase study of the cerebellar connections in the frog Rana temporaria].

It has been demonstrated that among afferent connections of the cerebellum of the frog Rana temporaria, projections from the medulla oblongata and the spinal cord are the predominant ones. In addition to the known connections, afferent connections of the cerebellum were revealed with the ventrolateral thalamus, motor nuclei of the III, IV, VI, VII, IX and X cranial nerves, as well as with the spinal cord.

Afferent interactions of cranial nerves involved in ingestion.

Substantial behavioral evidence implicates visceral afferent activity in the regulation of feeding behavior. One mechanism often suggested for this influence involves visceral afferent activity interacting with oral or gustatory afferent activity. This brief review summarizes the anatomical and electrophysiological evidence that indicates that such interactions might in fact take place. The available evidence for interactions between visceral and gustatory afferent messages is far from convincing, but perhaps only because the issue has seldom been addressed. The most direct tests suggested by
