This study showed that alcohol significantly decreases plasma testosterone levels, with changes noted as early as the first day of alcohol use (loss of pulsatile secretion). This effect is due, in part, to a direct testicular action since it occurred without LH suppression and in the presence of elevated LH levels. More chronic use of alcohol resulted in a suppression of LH. Thus, alcohol use in nonalcoholic men is associated with an effect both at the testicular and hypothalamic-pituitary levels.

In order to find out if there is an association between alcoholic heart disease and alcoholic liver disease, and to discover the prevalence and characteristics of anatomical findings in the heart at alcoholic subjects, a prospective study was realized during the autopsies of patients younger than 60 years old, who had died with alcoholic liver disease not associated with an obvious heart disease. A second group of subjects containing similar characteristics of the first group, only without a past history of alcoholism nor liver disease, were used as controls. The comparison between the two gro

Stress- and alcohol cues trigger alcohol craving and alcohol consumption in alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, their interactions on a physiological and psychological level and their effects on daily alcohol craving and alcohol use in real-life situations are not understood yet. We conducted a randomized-controlled experimental study to compare the effects of psychosocial stress against physical stress and a control intervention, each followed by an alcohol cue-exposure, on alcohol craving, subjective stress and saliva cortisol levels (main outcomes) in N = 121 individuals with AUD and colle

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Public perceptions of alcohol and its related harms and policies are shaped by multiple discourses and can influence behaviour and policy support. As part of a FrameWorks-informed project to test framing approaches to improve public understanding and support for evidence-based alcohol policies in the UK, this research aimed to (i) summarise relevant evidence; (ii) compare how public understanding of alcohol harms differs from those of academic and charity experts; and (iii) develop novel framing approaches.
METHODS: (1) a literature review including systematic, scoping an

BACKGROUND: Sensors within smartphones, such as accelerometer and location, can describe longitudinal markers of behavior as represented through devices in a method called digital phenotyping. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of digital phenotyping for patients with alcohol-associated liver disease and alcohol use disorder, determine correlations between smartphone data and alcohol craving, and establish power assessment for future studies to prognosticate clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 24 individuals with alcohol-associated liver disease and alcohol use disorder were instru

The rate of alcoholic hepatitis (AH) has risen in recent years. AH can cause as much as 40-50% mortality in severe cases. Successful abstinence has been the only therapy associated with long-term survival in patients with AH. Thus, it is crucial to be able to identify at-risk individuals in order to implement preventative measures. From the patient database, adult patients (age 18 and above) with AH were identified using the ICD-10 classification from November 2017 to October 2019. Liver biopsies are not routinely performed at our institution. Therefore, patients were diagnosed with AH based o

RATIONALE: Alcohol use disorder is a common and devastating mental illness for which satisfactory treatments are still lacking. Nalmefene, as an opioid receptor modulator, could pharmacologically support the reduction of drinking by reducing the (anticipated) rewarding effects of alcohol and expanding the range of treatment options. It has been hypothesized that nalmefene acts via an indirect modulation of the mesolimbic reward system. So far, only a few imaging findings on the neuronal response to nalmefene are available.
OBJECTIVES: We tested the effect of a single dose of 18 mg nalmefene o

OBJECTIVE: The risk of alcohol dependence (AD) in Japanese men and women was evaluated according to combinations of alcohol flushing and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2, rs671) and alcohol dehydrogenase-1B (ADH1B, rs1229984) genotypes, all of which are known to determine AD susceptibility in Asians. Previous studies have focused on men, since women account for a smaller proportion of AD subjects.
METHODS: Case control studies were conducted between 3721 male and 335 female AD Japanese and 610 male and 406 female controls who were asked about their current or former tendency to experience faci

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Managed alcohol programs (MAP) are a harm reduction approach for those experiencing alcohol use disorders (AUD) and homelessness. These programs were developed in Canada and have had positive results; very few exist in the UK and Ireland. The aim of this study was to scope the feasibility and acceptability of implementing MAPs in Scotland.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Using mixed-methods, we conducted two linked phases of work. Quantitative data were collected from the case records of 33 people accessing eight third sector services in Scotland and analysed in SPSS using descript

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the frequency of alcohol consumption, the amount of alcohol consumed, and the frequency of severe alcohol intoxication are related with obesity in Korean adolescents. In 2009, 72,399 students from the 7th to 12th grades participated in the 5th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS-V) project. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess whether body mass index (BMI) was associated with the frequency of alcohol consumption, the amount of alcohol consumed, and the frequency of severe alcohol intoxication, after controlli

BACKGROUND: Models of adolescent alcohol involvement that include individual difference, family, and peer risk factors indicate a significant association between the drinking of adolescents and that of their peers. Peer drinking influences, however, have not been investigated extensively in integrative models of adult drinking. The purpose of this study was to test a model of adult drinking that incorporated the potentially important risk factor of partner drinking and in which proximal risk factors (peer drinking, alcohol expectancies) were hypothesized to be strongly associated with adult al

We have recently shown that priming injections of alcohol and footshock stress reinstate alcohol seeking in drug-free rats. Here we tested whether naltrexone and fluoxetine, two drugs used in the treatment of alcohol dependence, would affect reinstatement of alcohol seeking induced by these events. We also determined the effects of these drugs on alcohol self-administration during the maintenance phase. Rats were trained to press a lever for a 12% w/v alcohol solution. After stable drug-taking behavior was obtained, lever pressing for alcohol was extinguished. Reinstatement of drug seeking was

OBJECTIVE: Assessment reactivity refers to the extent to which repeated measurement of behavioral and psychological phenomena influences subsequent behavior change. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate whether frequent self-report influences Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)-related processes and alcohol-related outcomes.
METHOD: Participants (N = 192; 63% female, Mage = 42.95) were assigned to either a 6-month EMA condition (n = 133), completing twice-daily surveys in addition to baseline and 3- and 6-month follow-up assessments, or a minimal assessment condition …

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a highly impairing condition with important public health impacts. Despite the availability of treatment options for AUD, research shows that few people receive treatment, and even fewer can maintain abstinence/low-drinking levels. This study investigated the role of personality traits in past-year alcohol use among individuals with severe AUD who ever attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a widespread and easily accessible self-help group for alcohol problems.
METHODS: Univariable and multivariable regressions were performed separately in females and m…

BACKGROUND: There is evidence suggesting that there is: (1) additive polysomnographic effects of alcoholism and depression; and (2) elevated baseline REM density in primary alcoholics with (PASD) and without lifetime history of secondary depression (NPA).
METHODS: 23 PASDs, 59 NPAs, and 23 primary major depression patients (PMD) underwent polysomnography. Any drinking within 3 months after a 1-month inpatient alcohol rehabilitation defined relapse.
RESULTS: PASDs' polysomnography was more like NPAs than PMDs. Polysomnography reflected 3-month sobriety status more than diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking may increase blood glucose levels. Moreover, in alcohol-dependent subjects, glucose may play a putative role in alcohol preference.
METHODS: This study investigated the relationship between blood glucose levels and both alcohol heavy drinking and craving in alcohol-dependent subjects participating in the COMBINE Study. The primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between baseline (pretreatment) glucose levels and percentage of heavy drinking day (PHDD) during treatment. The secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between glucose levels, baseli

Previous work showed that rats that were exposed to a high-fat, low-carbohydrate/protein ketogenic diet (KD) exhibited elevated blood alcohol levels following alcohol exposure compared with rats fed regular chow. Additionally, the administration of a KD prior to alcohol exposure (i.e., a history of KD) reduced alcohol consumption in alcohol-dependent rats that were no longer on the diet. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms by which a KD alters alcohol metabolism and tested whether ongoing KD exposure reduces alcohol consumption in rats. We hypothesized that chronic KD exposure
