Prevalence of Intestinal Amebiasis Among Saudi Residents Living in the Al-Baha Region, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Entamoeba histolytica is a pathogenic protozoan parasite that can cause amoebiasis, which is one of the leading causes of death from parasitic infections. AIMS: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of intestinal amebiasis among Saudi patients who attended the two major hospitals, including King Fahad Hospital in Al-Baha and Prince Meshari Hospital in Baljurashi, which is a big governorate in Al-Baha, in addition to the Central Laboratory in the Al-Baha region. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of demographic, clinical, radiological, and laboratory data collected from …

Henoch-Schönlein Purpura Triggered by Amebiasis in a Young Female Child: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis, formerly known as Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), is the most common form of systemic vasculitis in children, characterized by the deposition of IgA within small blood vessels. While HSP typically manifests with purpuric rash, arthritis, and gastrointestinal involvement, reports of HSP triggered by parasitic infections, such as amebiasis, are rare. This case examines the association between HSP and Entamoeba histolytica infection, highlighting the importance of recognizing parasitic triggers in systemic vasculitis. A 12-year-old female with no significant pas…

A new autochthonous case of amebiasis in Italy in a patient without risk factors: an alert for clinicians and laboratorians.

We describe a rare case of intestinal amebiasis of unknown source, in an immunocompetent patient with no risk factors. The detection of an autochthonous Entamoeba histolytica strain causing ulcerative colitis (UC) in a healthy individual was unexpected, but it was the second time it had occurred in Italy in a few months therefore, it highlighted the urgency to establish a new approach in the diagnosis of UC and more generally in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, involving routine parasitological investigation even in a non-endemic area.

[Effects of Saccharomyces boulardii yeast on trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica in vitro and in cecal amebiasis in young rats].

Lyophilized and rehydrated Saccharomyces boulardii yeasts were administered to young rats previously inoculated into the cecum with Entamoeba histolytica. The numbers of diseased young rats and the severity of the infection, assessed from the appearance of the cecum and its content of mucus and amebae, were significantly reduced by the treatment. The lesions observed resembled those seen in the untreated controls, although healing was faster in the treated animals. Saccharomyces boulardii had no intrinsic amebicidal action in vitro.

Invasive amebiasis in naturally infected New World and Old World monkeys with and without clinical disease.

Histopathological preparations of cecum and colon from monkeys naturally infected with invasive Entamoeba histolytica were examined to determine the distribution of amebae in the tissues and the types of lesions, if any, associated with them. Infections were studied in 3 New World species (10 Callicebus moloch, 1 C. torquatus, and 2 Aotus trivirgatus) and 3 Old World species (8 Macaca mulatta, 6 Erythrocebus patas, and 1 Cercopithecus aethiops). Amebiasis was recorded as the principal or a contributing cause of death of all of the 13 New World monkeys and in 6 of the 15 Old World monkeys; ameb…
