OBJECTIVE: to review the current diagnostic and therapeutic landscape of AML in Latin America as a reflection of other low- and middle-income countries and regions of the world. Encompassing both acute promyelocytic and non-promyelocytic disease types.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature and study registries concerning epidemiological features of patients with AML/APL treated in Latin America, as well as evaluated diagnostic and genetic stratification and patient fitness assessment challenges, the importance of early mortality and supportive care capacity, intensive and non-intensive chemothe

Vitiligo is a common chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by skin and hair depigmentation that affects 0.5%-2.0% of the global population. Vitiligo is associated with diminished quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial burden. The burden of vitiligo may vary based on skin tone and cultural differences as well as geographical variations in disease awareness, societal stigma, healthcare systems and treatment options. Data on the burden and management of vitiligo in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America are scarce. Literature searches using terms covering vitiligo in Africa, the Middle Eas

PURPOSE: To determine trends in hypospadias management, including surgical techniques and perioperative care, by pediatric urologists in North America.
METHODS: An anonymous online survey was devised to assess approaches to hypospadias repair and management, including anesthetic considerations, catheter placement, choice of dressing, and postoperative antibiotic treatment. The survey was sent to all practicing members of the Societies for Pediatric Urology.
RESULTS: The survey was completed by 133 (34.5%) respondents. Hypospadias repair was overwhelmingly recommended between ages 6-12 months

The Opium Wars of 1839-1843 and 1856-1860 revealed the devastating effects of narcotic addiction on the health of the body politic of China. The defeated Qing dynasty lost effective sovereignty to the British, leaving it helpless against more than 100 years of exploitation by the European powers, the United States, and Japan. Today we see the same risk posed by prescription narcotics and illegal opioids imported from China that can be seen as retribution for the "Century of Humiliation" nearly two centuries ago.

Clinically significant endemic mycoses (fungal infections) in the United States (U.S.) include Blastomyces dermatitidis, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Coccidioides immitis/posadasii. While the majority of infections go clinically unnoticed, symptomatic disease can occur in immunocompromised or hospitalized patients, and occasionally in immune-competent individuals. Clinical manifestations vary widely and their diagnosis may require fungal culture, making the rapid diagnosis a challenge. Imaging can be helpful in making a clinical diagnosis prior to laboratory confirmation, as well as assist in c

The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition is considered in the history of medicine as the first international health expedition aimed at the global elimination of a contagious disease: smallpox. However, the initiatives carried out in this way before the arrival of the Balmis Expedition, by surgeons from the Spanish Navy, are less well known. Thus, the main objective of this research work is to offer an overview of the different anti-variolic vaccination initiatives prior to the campaign financed by the Spanish crown from these health facilities. Using the heuristic and hermeneutic method, ou

TORCH pathogens are a group of globally prevalent infectious agents that may cross the placental barrier, causing severe negative sequalae in neonates, including fetal death and lifelong morbidity. TORCH infections are classically defined by Toxoplasma gondii, other infectious causes of concern (e.g., syphilis, Zika virus, malaria, human immunodeficiency virus), rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex viruses. Neonatal disorders and congenital birth defects are the leading causes of neonatal mortality in Central America's Northern Triangle, yet little is known about TORCH congenital

Asian migration to America began with Chinese railroad workers on the transcontinental railroad (1862-1869). Their labor saved the foundering Central Pacific Railroad, challenged by building a rail line through the Sierra Nevada. By mid-1864 only 50 miles of track had been laid, grueling work that dissuaded its white workforce from going any further. To save the railroad 50 Cantonese workers were hired in early 1864 from neighboring mines to lay rail through forests, canyons, and granite mountains. High explosives, rockslides, cave-ins, and winter avalanches were constant dangers. The trial wo

Increasing hospital and labor & delivery (L&D) closures have led to declining access to hospital obstetric care in rural areas across the country. These closures increase the burden on women and families living in rural communities, who often must drive long distances for prenatal visits and delivery. The lack of maternal health care in rural America can also result in several adverse maternal and infant outcomes including premature birth, low birth weight, out of hospital births, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and increased risk of postpartum depression. The reasons for these cl

Problems related to the identity of Simuliidae species are impediments to effective disease control in Amazonia. Some of these species, such as Simulium oyapockense Floch & Abonnenc, 1946 (Diptera: Simuliidae), are vectors of the organisms that cause onchocerciasis and mansonellosis diseases. This blackfly species has a wide distribution in South America, and it is suspected of being a complex of cryptic species. The aim of this study is to characterize the nominal species S. oyapockense using partial COI gene sequences. Seven populations of S. oyapockense (morphologically identified) were ana

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is an infestation by fly larvae. Some species exclusively affect humans, contaminating wounds, mucous membranes, and other tissues. It is a disease with marked socioeconomic connotations.
CASE PRESENTATION: The current case involves a 95-year-old woman, an inhabitant of the Andean region of Ecuador with a history of resection of basal cell carcinoma in the left zygomatic region and a diagnosis of chronic leukemia. The surgical wound was secondarily infested with Cochliomyia hominivorax fly larvae and the patient was readmitted to the hospital to treat this complication. A

We report molecular identification of an adult Spirometra mansoni tapeworm retrieved from a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) in Colombia, confirming presence of this parasite in South America. This tapeworm is the causative agent of human sparganosis, commonly reported from Southeast Asia, and represents the second congeneric species with known zoonotic potential in the Americas.

Vaccination against infectious diseases is a cornerstone of veterinary medicine in the prevention of disease transmission, illness severity, and often death in animals. In North American equine medicine, equine vaccines protecting against tetanus, rabies, Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, and West Nile are core vaccines as these have been classified as having a heightened risk of mortality, infectiousness, and endemic status. Some guidelines differ from the label of vaccines, to improve the protection of patients or to decrease the unnecessary administration to reduce potential sid

In this commentary, which responds to the article "Anti-Black Racism as a Chronic Condition," by Nneka Sederstrom and Tamika Lasege, I draw on my experience as a physician who cares for a largely Black patient population. Physicians are trained to "first do no harm" and strive to treat patients to the best of their abilities. However well intentioned, many of us fall short of this goal and witness the consequences of health inequities that disproportionally impact the lives of Black patients. Recent years have brought increased acknowledgment and understanding of social determinants of health,

Drawing on personal testimonials and questions addressed to psychiatric hospital officials, this article explores how patients and their loved ones engaged with the idea of diagnosis in interwar and war-era America. I argue that diagnosis had synergies with intellectual sensibilities of American modernity, among them an enthusiasm for science and newness, a modernist sense of time that could be both forward- and backward-looking, and a knowable, interpreted self. While self-understanding and the creation of life narratives were more often considered the bailiwick of psychoanalysis in this peri

This study analysed Strongyloides stercoralis genetic variability based on a 404 bp region of the cox1 gene from Latin-American samples in a clinical context including epidemiological, diagnosis and follow-up variables. A prospective, descriptive, observational study was conducted to evaluate clinical and parasitological evolution after ivermectin treatment of 41 patients infected with S. stercoralis. Reactivation of the disease was defined both by clinical symptoms appearance and/or direct larvae detection 30 days after treatment or later. We described 10 haplotypes organized in two clusters.
