Donkeys, owing to the frequent outdoor activity, are exposed to a high risk of infection with tick-borne pathogens. This work aimed to detect exposure to Theileria equi, Babesia caballi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. of donkeys reared in Central Italy. For this purpose 122 adult donkeys were selected within 11 herds and submitted to blood collection. IgG antibodies to T. equi, B. caballi, A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi s.l. were detected by IFAT. Conventional PCRs targeting the genes MSP2 and the flagellin were used for the detection of A. phagocytophilum and B

This epidemiological survey of Anaplasma platys was carried out in rural and urban areas of three distinct regions of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. EDTA blood samples were collected during the dry season from dogs living on farms with an attempt to resample the same dogs in the subsequent rainy season. Samples were also taken from dogs in urban areas. DNA was extracted from blood samples for real time PCR. Risk factors, such as age, breed, sex, presence of ticks, and packed cell volume were analyzed. During the rainy season, the prevalence of infection by A. platys in dogs in the rural ar

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cats in the northeastern United States develop serum antibodies against antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum and whether coinfection with the 2 organisms occurs.
SAMPLE POPULATION: Serum samples from 84 healthy cats and 9 cats with lameness, fever, anorexia, or fatigue.
PROCEDURE: Serum antibodies against B. burgdorferi and A. phagocytophilum were measured with an ELISA incorporating a whole-cell preparation or purified recombinant antigens, by means of Western blot analysis, or indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) staining.
RESULTS:

VBI (babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, bartonellosis, borreliosis) was established using 1 or more of several blood tests. BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases undermine cattle fitness and productivity in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. In this West African country, cattle are challenged by numerous tick species, especially during the wet season. Consequently, several TBDs are known to be endemic in Nigerian cattle, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, cowdriosis and theilerioris (by Theileria mutans and Theileria velifera). To date, all investigations on cattle TBDs in Nigeria have been based on cytological examinations and/or on serological methods. This study aimed to ascertain the occur…

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are illnesses caused by pathogens transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as ticks and mosquitoes. Many CVBDs, including dirofilariosis, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis, are globally distributed and may cause a variety of clinical signs in dogs. Several CVBD agents are zoonotic, making epidemiological surveillance a joint veterinary and public health effort. In this study, we determined the seropositivity of four pathogens from dogs on Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, a US Commonwealth located in the western Pacific Ocean.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases have an adverse impact on health of dogs, and infected dogs can be sentinels for human infection. Infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, an agent of Chagas disease, causes fatal heart disease in dogs across the southern United States but has been neglected from wide-scale prevalence studies.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of exposure to T. cruzi, Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and infection with Dirofilaria immitis among dogs in shelters across Texas and to identify risk factors for T. cruzi seropositivity.
ANIMALS: Six hundred and

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma marginale is an important tick-transmitted rickettsial pathogen of cattle, with worldwide distribution and an important economic impact. The genetic diversity of A. marginale strains has been extensively characterized in different geographical regions throughout the world, while information is limited on studies in China. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and genetic diversity of A. marginale strains in cattle from ten provinces of China.
METHODS: A total of 557 blood samples from cattle were collected and screened for the occurrence of A. marginale

Objective To investigate the early transcriptomic characteristics of neutrophils and monocytes stimulated by the major surface protein 2 (MSP2) of anaplasma phagocytophilum(AP), to preliminarily explore their functional differences and potential common pro-inflammatory mechanisms of these two cell types in the inflammatory response, and to provide a theoretical basis for understanding the inflammatory pathogenesis of Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis (HGA) and for developing anti-inflammatory strategies. Methods HL60 cells (rHL60) differentiated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for 8 days were use…

INTRODUCTION: Goats constitute a fundamental component of the livestock sector in Egypt, contributing to rural livelihoods, food security, and national income. However, their productivity is increasingly affected by tick-borne diseases. Despite their importance, data on tick-borne pathogens affecting goats in Egypt are still lacking. Anaplasmosis and theileriosis are among the most important tick-borne diseases, posing serious threats to animal health and economic stability.
METHODS: This study investigated the microscopic and molecular detection of Anaplasma and Theileria species in goats fr…

In this study, we used a metagenomic approach to analyze bacterial communities from diverse populations (humans, animals, and vectors) to in … s shown to occur as there was seropositivity (IgG) in UFI patients for bartonellosis as well as for anaplasmosis. Using a metagenomic approach, this study demonstrated the circulation and transmission of several pathogens in the environment, some of which are known causative agents of illness in human populations.

Ticks transmit a greater variety of pathogenic agents that cause disease in humans and animals than any other haematophagous arthropod, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tick-borne encephalitis, Crimean Congo haemorhagic fever, and many others (Gulia-Nuss et al., 2016). Although diverse explanations have been proposed to explain their remarkable vectorial capacity, among the most important are their blood feeding habit, their long term off-host survival, the diverse array of bioactive molecules that disrupt the host's natural hem…

Ticks transmit a wide range of protozoan, bacterial, and viral pathogens to humans and animals globally. However, data on ticks infesting domestic ruminants and the pathogens they carry are scarce in Malawi. In this study, we examined ticks collected from domestic ruminants and screened them for selected veterinary and medically important protozoan and bacterial pathogens. A total of 964 ticks were collected from 202 cattle, 63 goats, and 16 sheep across eleven districts in Malawi. Ticks were morphologically identified to species level using taxonomical keys, with molecular confirmation by PCR
