Sixty six children (40 males, 26 females) aged from 4 to 14 years with hookworm infection were treated with mebendazole. Thirty one and 35 children were treated with mebendazole 300 mg single dose and 600 mg conventional regimen respectively. Stool examination by Kato-Katz technique were done for 3 consecutive days before treatment and on day 14-16, 21-23 after treatment. The efficacy of a new spot-on formulation of selamectin plus sarolaner for cats was evaluated against induced infections with Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworm) and Toxocara cati (roundworm). Five laboratory studies were conducted using adult, purpose-bred cats. This study compared the course of infection by Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma braziliense in mixed-breed dogs infected with L3 larvae. Dogs infected with A. caninum eliminated more eggs than did those infected with A. braziliense. A total of 38 % of A. caninum and 44 % of A. braziliense larvae were recovered as adult worms. A convenience collection of fecal samples from 148 dogs in northern Florida was examined for the presence of Ancylostoma braziliense eggs by using centrifugal sugar flotation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Of the 148 samples, 64 (43.2%) contained hookworm eggs. DNA from 42 samples was successfully amplified using PCR; using RFLP, 2 samples were identified as containing DNA of A. braziliense (4.8% of the 42 successfully amplified samples).

Factors associated with parasitism by helminths and protozoans in 500 dogs presented to three veterinary clinics in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro from November 2003 to September 2004 were evaluated. Dogs were submitted to physical examination and owners were interviewed about the animal's management.
