Occurrence of extended- spectrum β-lactamase harboring K. pneumoniae in various sources: a one health perspective.

This study was designed to investigate the occurrence and dissemination of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) harboring Klebsiella pneumoniae in various ecological niches under the one health approach. A total of 793 samples were collected from animals, humans, and the environment. The findings of the study revealed the occurrence of K. pneumoniae as follows: animals (11.6%), humans (8.4%), and associated environments (7.0%), respectively. A high occurrence rate of ESBL genes was found in animals compared to human and environmental isolates. A total of 18 distinct sequence types (STs) and 12

Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis meningitis associated with a companion dog in a young adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter spp., common commensals in the gastrointestinal tract of animals, especially poultry, can cause acute gastrointestinal illness in humans through animal-to-human transmission. Although Campylobacter fetus, especially subspecies fetus, rarely leads to systemic infections such as bacteremia in immunocompromised patients, it is unclear whether Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis (Cfv) causes infectious diseases in humans. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old man with a history of chronic alcoholism visited the emergency department with weakness of the left extremities.

Bilateral carotid artery occlusion causes periventricular leukomalacia in neonatal dogs.

At 14 days of age, seven mongrel puppies were anesthetized and bilateral carotid arteries, not only the common but also the external and internal carotid arteries, were ligated with sutures. Seven sham-operated littermates served as controls. They were sacrificed at 3 months of age, and their brains were examined macro- and microscopically. Neuropathological examination revealed dilated posterior communicating and basilar arteries in bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCAO) animals. Six out of 7 BCAO brains had uni- or multiloculated cysts in the periventricular white matter which were surrou

Do wind energy installations alter gastrointestinal parasite infection patterns in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in central Poland?

The European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) is a widespread cervid in Europe and an important reservoir of gastrointestinal helminths. Although environmental and host-related drivers of parasite communities have been extensively studied, the effects of anthropogenic infrastructure on host-parasite interactions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize gastrointestinal helminth diversity in roe deer from central Poland and to evaluate the influence of wind farms on parasite infections. A total of 102 roe deer collected between 2022 and 2024, hunted in accordance with local m

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on anthrax in selected game management areas in Zambia.

In this study, we investigated anthrax, a zoonotic disease, at the human-wildlife-livestock interface in Zambia, focusing on Simalaha Conservancy, Blue Lagoon, and Lochinvar National Parks. These areas represent key points where illegal wildlife trade and anthrax risk coexist. Although anthrax remains endemic in Zambia, there is limited data on community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) related to anthrax transmission and the role of wildlife trade value chains in its spread and maintenance. Therefore, we examined how these community KAPs influence anthrax transmission through the il

Microbial community structure and composition is associated with host species and sex in Sigmodon cotton rats.

BACKGROUND: The cotton rat (genus Sigmodon) is an essential small animal model for the study of human infectious disease and viral therapeutic development. However, the impact of the host microbiome on infection outcomes has not been explored in this model, partly due to the lack of a comprehensive characterization of microbial communities across different cotton rat species. Understanding the dynamics of their microbiome could significantly help to better understand its role when modeling viral infections in this animal model. RESULTS: We examined the bacterial communities of the gut and thr

Bacterial Microbiome Dynamics in Post Pull-Through Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC): An Experimental Study Employing the Endothelin Receptor B-Null Mouse Model.

PURPOSE: Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is the most frequent potentially life-threatening complication in children with Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) even after definitive corrective surgery. Mounting evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota likely contribute to the etiology of enterocolitis, so the aim of this study was to use a mouse model of post pull-through HAEC to compare the fecal bacterial communities of animals which developed HAEC to those free of enterocolitis. METHODS: Ten Ednrb -/- and 8wild type mice underwent the microsurgical pull-through surgery, and stool was

Analysis of bacterial community shifts in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs fed diets supplemented with β-glucan from Laminaria digitata, Laminaria hyperborea and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of algal and yeast β-glucans on the porcine gastrointestinal microbiota, specifically the community of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and coliforms. A total of 48 pigs were fed four diets over a 28-day period to determine the effect that each had on these communities. The control diet consisted of wheat and soya bean meal. The remaining three diets contained wheat and soya bean meal supplemented with β-glucan at 250 g/tonne from Laminaria digitata, Laminaria hyperborea or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Faecal samples were collected from animals before

Locomotor training restores walking in a nonambulatory child with chronic, severe, incomplete cervical spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Locomotor training (LT) enhances walking in adult experimental animals and humans with mild-to-moderate spinal cord injuries (SCIs). The animal literature suggests that the effects of LT may be greater on an immature nervous system than on a mature nervous system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of LT in a child with chronic, incomplete SCI. SUBJECT: The subject was a nonambulatory 4 1/2-year-old boy with an American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) C Lower Extremity Motor Score (LEMS) of 4/50 who was deemed permanently wheelchair-

Empowering Riverine Communities in the Amazon: Strategies for Preventing Rabies.

Rabies, caused by the Lyssavirus genus, is a highly lethal zoonotic disease transmitted by animals such as bats and domestic and wild carnivores to humans, claiming nearly 100% of lives. In Brazil, recent evidence suggests an increasing role of bats in human deaths from rabies, particularly in the Amazon region. This neglected tropical disease disproportionately affects impoverished and vulnerable populations in rural areas, where approximately 80% of human cases are concentrated. This article presents research conducted in riverine communities of the Tapajós/Arapiuns Extractive Reserve in Bra

Community-perceived benefits of ivermectin treatment in northeastern Nigeria.

A 3-step approach involving focus group discussion, structured interviews and informal conversations with key individuals was used to investigate community usage and perceived benefits of ivermectin in nine Nigerian villages participating in a WHO-sponsored investigation of community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI). Only 27% of 284 persons interviewed had received treatment. An under-estimation of the district's ivermectin needs led to inadequate supply of ivermectin to the communities, which was cited as the main reason (65%) for non-treatment. All those treated (N=76) were further

Finding healing through animal companionship in Japanese animal cafés.

Animal cafés-businesses in which customers pay by the hour to have a drink and relax in a space filled with cats, rabbits or other animals-began to appear in Japan in 2004, as a part of the iyashi healing boom. The iyashi boom, in goods and experiences that offer emotional and physical healing, was a response to problems of economic and social precarity triggered by the end of the Japanese bubble and the changing economic situation, particularly among younger Japanese facing the loss of earlier forms of social support and community. Animal cafés offer iyashi to their customers by providing the

A New Murine Model for Gastrointestinal Anthrax Infection.

The scientific community has been restricted by the lack of a practical and informative animal model of gastrointestinal infection with vegetative Bacillus anthracis. We herein report the development of a murine model of gastrointestinal anthrax infection by gavage of vegetative Sterne strain of Bacillus anthracis into the complement-deficient A/J mouse strain. Mice infected in this manner developed lethal infections in a dose-dependent manner and died 30 h-5 d following gavage. Histological findings were consistent with penetration and growth of the bacilli within the intestinal villi, with s

Animal models of Parkinson's disease: a guide to selecting the optimal model for your research.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex, multisystem disorder characterised by α-synuclein (SNCA) pathology, degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons, multifactorial pathogenetic mechanisms and expression of a plethora of motor and non-motor symptoms. Animal models of PD have already been instructive in helping us unravel some of these aspects. However, much remains to be discovered, requiring continued interrogation by the research community. In contrast with the situation for many neurological disorders, PD benefits from of a wide range of available animal models (pharmacological, to

Recirculation in the acute period of cerebral infarction: experimental research on brain swelling and its suppression by using mannitol or glycerol.

Using our previously published "incomplete cerebral hemispheric infarction model in dogs" (produced by simultaneous ipsilateral occlusions of the anterior cerebral artery at the branching of the ethmoidal artery from its A1 portion, the A2 portion, the internal carotid artery, the posterior communication artery, the posterior cerebral artery, and the anterior cerebellar artery), two, four, or six hours occlusion of blood flow was undertaken. Observations were then made on the degree of brain swelling following recirculation due to administration of mannitol or glycerol solutions. Furthermore,

Child exposure to animal feces and zoonotic pathogens in northwest Ecuador: A mixed-methods study.

In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), close cohabitation with animals and limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure increase the risk of zoonotic enteric pathogen transmission to young children. This mixed-methods study combined (A) microbiological analysis of 120 animal fecal samples, and (B) go-along, semi-structured interviews with 35 mothers of children under two years across urban, intermediate, and rural communities in Ecuador to investigate: (Q1) What zoonotic enteric pathogens are present in animal feces and at what concentrations? (Q2) How are child

The sero-epidemiology of Rift Valley fever in people in the Lake Victoria Basin of western Kenya.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus affecting livestock and people. This study was conducted in western Kenya where RVFV outbreaks have not previously been reported. The aims were to document the seroprevalence and risk factors for RVFV antibodies in a community-based sample from western Kenya and compare this with slaughterhouse workers in the same region who are considered a high-risk group for RVFV exposure. The study was conducted in western Kenya between July 2010 and November 2012. Individuals were recruited from randomly selected homesteads and a census of slaughterho
