BACKGROUND: Mine blast injuries of foot are devastating injuries that result in composite tissue loss or amputations. Negative pressure wound therapy has helped in the management of such combat-related wounds. The aim of this study was to report experiences gained in managing such injuries at a tertiary care center.
METHODS: 17 combatants who sustained mine blast injuries were included in this study. Severity of foot injury was assessed as per Foot and Ankle Severity Score. After wound debridement, negative pressure wound therapy was started and foot defect was appropriately reconstructed. Fo

With the number of musculoskeletal disorders increasing in the workplace, the potential exists for multiple injuries due to compensations. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of non-lower back injuries on the trunk motions adopted by the individual during typical lifting tasks. A total of 32 injured subjects (eight for each injury group--shoulder, hand/wrist, knee and foot/ankle) and 32 matched (gender, height and weight) healthy subjects performed laboratory lifting tasks. The independent variables were task asymmetry (clockwise, sagittally symmetric and counter-clockwise),

Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. They are not isolated innocuous injuries as 30-40% of people who sprain their ankles develop chronic ankle instability. Ankle instability is typically assessed under passive unloaded conditions, ignoring any potential contribution of joint loading or muscle activation to the maintenance of ankle stability. Thus, the relevance of unloaded ankle stability assessments to the evaluation of impairments in chronic ankle instability or the prediction of future ankle sprains is questionable. Ankle impedance, which quantifies the resista

BACKGROUND: Several factors are thought to contribute to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) development, including the posttraumatic inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to compare 2 injuries at the same joint with a different severity and prognosis. This study compared the intra-articular inflammatory response after rotational ankle fracture (lower energy and less PTOA) with tibial plafond fracture (higher energy and more PTOA).
METHODS: This prospective comparative study was conducted at a level 1 trauma center between 2014-2019. Patients between 18 and 60 years of age with

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this chapter is to review critically the existing studies on the epidemiology of pediatric rugby injuries and discuss suggestions for injury prevention and further research.
DATA SOURCES: Data were sourced from the sports medicine and science literature mainly since 1990, and from a prospective injury surveillance project in rugby undertaken by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney during 2002. Literature searches were performed using Medline and SportsDiscus.
MAIN RESULTS: Reported injury rates were between 7 and 18 injuries per 1,000 hours played, wi

Foot and ankle trauma sustained in the Global War on Terror have unique causes and characteristics. At least one-quarter of all battle injuries involve the lower extremity. These severe lower extremity wounds require specialized early treatment. Ballistic mechanisms cause almost all injuries, and as such, most combat foot and ankle wounds are open in nature. Wounds are characteristically caused by blast mechanisms, but high velocity gunshot injuries are also common. The severe and polytraumatic nature of injuries sustained frequently call for damage control orthopaedics to be utilized. Cautiou

Ankle sprains are one of the most common sport-related injuries treated by rehabilitation professionals. These injuries often result in lost participation and can lead to subsequent injury episodes. Therefore, it is important to determine appropriate means of preventing these injuries. There has recently been an increase in the popularity of balance training programs for the prevention of knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, with some thought that starting these programs in younger athletes may be most beneficial. However, there is the potential that these types of training programs m

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution of lower extremity running injuries and their associated factors.
DESIGN: Descriptive and exploratory study.
PARTICIPANTS: 1004 participants of the 2005 ING Taipei International Marathon.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used a self-developed questionnaire to collect data of previous running injuries and applied multivariate logistic regression modeling to examine relationships between these injuries and associated factors.
RESULTS: Of the 893 valid questionnaires, 396 (44.4%) reported having previous lower extremity pain related to running. Knee joint

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical experiment of cortical screw in the treatment of tibiofibular syndesmosis separation together with ankle fractures.
METHODS: From March 2008 to May 2012,42 patients with tibiofibular syndesmosis separation were treated with cortical screw, including 20 cases in the left and 24 cases in the right. All the patients had closed injury. According to Lauge-Hansen classification, there were 18 cases of supination-external rotation, in which 4 patients with injuries belong to type II, 8 patients with injuries belong to type III, 6 patients with injuries belong t

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine a contemporary multi-year junior Australian football (AF) injury and illness profile and secondly, explore changes in incidence and burden over the six-year period.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: This study involved an elite male junior Under-18 competition and included six seasons of injury data between 2015 and 2021. A total of 1559 eligible players were included in the analysis. An injury was defined as 'any physical or medical condition that resulted in a player missing one or more regular competition season matches.' A Poisson regress

OBJECTIVES: To describe injury frequency and characteristics in roundnet athletes and compare injury characteristics between elite and non-elite athletes.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed by convenience sampling recreational and competitive roundnet athletes via a REDCap survey distributed through social media platforms. Although the long term prognosis for many injuries of the hind foot is poor, prompt diagnosis and treatment can lead to a satisfactory result. Failure to treat these injuries promptly can lead to circulatory problems and skin necrosis. Stiffness and post-traumatic arthritis may occur despite adequate treatment due to the complex anatomy of the region. With the exception of certain rare fractures of the os calcis, displaced fractures of the talar neck and body and fracture-dislocations, injuries in this region of the foot heal best after closed treatment and early mobilization of the ankle and

Ankle fractures are one of the more common musculoskeletal injuries that are treated by foot and ankle specialists. A thorough understanding of managing these injuries requires the ability to differentiate between stable and unstable fractures. The current literature supports the nonoperative management of stable Weber B ankle fractures, whereas unstable fractures have much better outcomes with surgical intervention. Specifically, we review the fixation strategies for the lateral, medial, and posterior malleolar fractures respectively. Finally, we discuss the current trends in postoperative ma

Acute injuries to the lateral ankle complex remain common and account for 20% to 25% of musculoskeletal injuries. Initial assessment should use the Ottawa ankle rules, and grading should take into account degree of mechanical instability. Nonoperative measures are preferable for all grades of injury; however, mechanical instability is a predictor for resprains. Functional treatment after a short period of relative immobilization gives satisfactory results, and residual chronic ankle instability can be managed by repair or reconstruction. Delayed physical examination in elite athletes, along wi
