Krimighna (anthelmintic) role of Neem Oil (medicated oil of Azadirachta indica Linn.) and adjuvant Ayurvedic therapies in the management of anal myiasis: A case report.

Myiasis is an uncommon pathology of parasitic infestation in live mammals by fly larvae (maggots). The fly grows and gets nourished by invading host tissue. Epidemiology of Myiasis has been recorded in tropical regions of world. No any documentation has been found on Ayurvedic intervention for anal myiasis management. The study is about a 49-year male having anal myiasis along and interno-external piles together. The case was managed by local application of Neem oil (Medicated oil of Azadirachta indica Linn.) soaked gauze piece once a day on daily bases in the invaded tissues of myiasis along

The anthelmintic flubendazole blocks human melanoma growth and metastasis and suppresses programmed cell death protein-1 and myeloid-derived suppressor cell accumulation.

The incidence of melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. In recent years, treatment of melanoma and a range of other deadly cancers has involved immunotherapy with programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1)/PD-1 ligand (PD-L1) checkpoint blockade which has improved survival. However, many patients do not respond or have partial response, survival benefit is in the order of months and all available PD-1/PD-L1 strategies are antibodies requiring intravenous infusion. There are no clinically approved small molecule pharmacologic inhibitors of the PD-1/PD-L1 system. The benzimidazole deri

The impact of anthelmintic treatment intervention on malaria infection and anaemia in school and preschool children in Magu district, Tanzania: an open label randomised intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have suggested that helminth infections increase the risk of malaria infection and are associated with increased number of malaria attacks and anaemia. Thus interventions to control helminth infections may have an impact on incidence of clinical malaria and anaemia. The current study assessed the impact of two anthelmintic treatment approaches on malaria infection and on anaemia in school and pre-school children in Magu district, Tanzania. METHODS: A total of 765 children were enrolled into a prospective randomized anthelmintic intervention trial following a baseline

The effects of prophylactic anthelmintic treatment on the productivity of traditionally managed Djallonke sheep and West African Dwarf goats kept under high trypanosomosis risk.

The effects of a prophylactic anthelmintic intervention on the productivity of village based sheep and goats was studied in an area of high trypanosomosis risk in The Gambia during 2 and 3 years, respectively. In total, 223 sheep and 385 goats from five villages were included. Allocation to treatment groups (treated-control) was randomised by village, based on age and sex. Three treatments per rainy season were applied with Fenbendazole (Panacur, Hoechst, 2.5%, 5 mg/kg). Mean nematode egg excretion per gram faeces (EPG) of the treated groups were significantly reduced by prophylactic anthelmin

Phytochemical characterization and insight into the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Artemisia brevifolia Wall ex Dc. against the different life stages of the gastrointestinal nematode of sheep.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are the major constraint to the production of small ruminants worldwide, causing significant losses in growth, productivity, and overall health. Clinical infections may linked to anaemia, diarrhoea, anorexia, oedema, and even mortality, whereas subclinical infections result in hidden production losses. Synthetic drugs are the primary means of control; however, their indiscriminate use has led to the emergence of parasite strains resistant to multiple classes of anthelmintics, this has created strong need for sustainable alternatives. Ethnomedicinal plants have…

Phytochemical analysis and anthelmintic activity of Combretum mucronatum leaf extract against infective larvae of soil-transmitted helminths including ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infect more than a quarter of the world's human population. In the absence of vaccines for most animal and human gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), treatment of infections primarily relies on anthelmintic drugs, while resistance is a growing threat. Therefore, there is a need to find alternatives to current anthelmintic drugs, especially those with novel modes of action. The present work aimed to study the composition and anthelmintic activity of Combretum mucronatum leaf extract (CMLE) by phytochemical analysis and larval migration inhibition assays

Strong association between high burden of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and household transmission among Malaysian Negritos, urging anthelmintic treatment beyond children.

The Orang Asli (OA), Malaysia's indigenous minority, continue to experience ongoing soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections despite efforts including the Resettlement Programme (RPS). This study explores STH epidemiology and associated risks of moderate-to-heavy infections among 259 indigenous Negritos across four states in Peninsular Malaysia. Stool samples, anthropometrics, haemoglobin levels (finger-prick) and sociodemographic and environmental-sanitation factors via pretested questionnaires were collected. Parasitological examinations (direct faecal smear, formol-ether concentration, an

Phytochemical profile and anthelmintic effects of Laurus nobilis essential oil against the ovine nematode Haemonchus contortus and the murine helminth model Heligmosomoides polygyrus.

Small ruminant production in tropical and temperate countries faced substantial anthelmintic resistance due to the intensive use of commercial anthelmintic drugs. Therefore, alternative treatments including natural bioactive compounds with anthelmintic potential have been investigated looking for its successfully use in the parasite control. In the present study, we describe the chemical profile of Laurus nobilis essential oil (EO), the in vitro anthelmintic activity of L. nobilis EO against Haemonchus contortus and its in vivo anthelmintic effect against the murine helminth parasite model Hel

High Throughput Screening of the NatureBank 'Marine Collection' in a Haemonchus Bioassay Identifies Anthelmintic Activity in Extracts from a Range of Sponges from Australian Waters.

Widespread resistance in parasitic nematodes to most classes of anthelmintic drugs demands the discovery and development of novel compounds with distinct mechanisms of action to complement strategic or integrated parasite control programs. Products from nature-which assume a diverse 'chemical space'-have significant potential as a source of anthelmintic compounds. In the present study, we screened a collection of extracts (n = 7616) derived from marine invertebrates sampled from Australian waters in a high throughput bioassay for in vitro anti-parasitic activity against the barber's pole worm

What impact will the achievement of the current World Health Organisation targets for anthelmintic treatment coverage in children have on the intensity of soil transmitted helminth infections?

BACKGROUND: It is the aim of the World Health Organisation to eliminate soil-transmitted helminths (STH) as a health problem in children. To this end, the goal is to increase anthelmintic treatment coverage for soil transmitted helminths to reach 75 % in pre-school aged and school aged children by 2020 in endemic countries. In this paper, we use mathematical models to investigate the impact of achieving this goal on the burdens of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichuria and hookworm. METHODS: We employ a deterministic fully age-structured model of STH transmission and mass drug administrati

Comprehensive evaluation of stool-based diagnostic methods and benzimidazole resistance markers to assess drug efficacy and detect the emergence of anthelmintic resistance: A Starworms study protocol.

BACKGROUND: To work towards reaching the WHO goal of eliminating soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections as a public health problem, the total number of children receiving anthelmintic drugs has strongly increased over the past few years. However, as drug pressure levels rise, the development of anthelmintic drug resistance (AR) is more and more likely to appear. Currently, any global surveillance system to monitor drug efficacy and the emergence of possible AR is lacking. Consequently, it remains unclear to what extent the efficacy of drugs may have dropped and whether AR is already presen
