PURPOSE: Measuring the anterior chamber diameter (AC) is important both for diagnostics and before ocular surgery. In clinical practice, horizontal AC diameter is usually estimated on the basis of measurements of corneal diameter (so-called white-to-white [WTW] distance). The usual method for selecting an appropriate size for an AC lens is to add 1 mm to WTW measurement. The lens epithelial cells of A and E type are involved in pathogenesis of posterior capsule opacification (PCO). They undergo metaplasia into microfibroblasts, then migrate towards posterior capsule where they proliferate and form opacification. These processes are stimulated by cytokines and interleukines. The extracellular matrix which constitutes a scaffold for migration and attachment of epithelial cells plays an important role in PCO formation. Integrines intercede in this process.

OBJECTIVE: To compare scleral buckling surgery (SB) and primary pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachments of medium complexity.
DESIGN: Prospective randomized multicenter clinical trial (the Scleral Buckling versus Primary Vitrectomy in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Study), separated into phakic or aphakic/pseudophakic eyes. The visual outcome and extent of aphakic spectacle use at community level was evaluated in 177 patients who underwent ICCE in peripheral camps. In 16.9%, both eyes were operated. In this study 35 patients with monocular traumatic aphakia were enrolled to document the degree of binocular vision gained by optical correction with contact lenses. The most important factors in achieving binocular vision were the interval between formation of the traumatic cataract and surgery and between the operation and starting wearing contact lenses. There was a statistically significant correlation between these two intervals and the achievement of near stereopsis and normal visual acuity.

The indications for keratoplasty at Moorfields Eye Hospital were reviewed for the period 1985-1987. There were 500 consecutive cases of which 472 underwent penetrating keratoplasty and 28 lamellar keratoplasty; of the grafts performed 31 were acute procedures. Aniseikonia and stereoacuity were measured in patients with unilateral aphakia, most of whom were postoperative senile cataract cases. The New Aniseikonia test was used to evaluate aniseikonia and the Titmus Stereotest to measure stereoacuity. Cystoid macular edema frequently complicates recovery from cataract surgery. Our understanding of this disease would be enhanced by more sensitive and quantitative methods to evaluate it. We performed vitreous fluorophotometry in 66 nondiabetic patients who had recently undergone cataract surgery. Focal electroretinograms (FERG), pattern electroretinograms (PERG), and visual evoked potentials (VEP) were studied in a group of 30 aphakic patients with cystoid macular oedema (ACME).
