Feeding Problems in Infants and Children.

This article focuses on factors related to decreased food intake of infants and children, but does not address anorexia or bulimia nervosa. The nature of feeding problems may be behavioral, organic, or a mixture of both. Behavioral problems that affect intake have their roots in 1) parental or cultural expectations for food intake and body habit, 2) parental anxiety about weight gain in a vulnerable child or insecurity about parental skills, 3) power struggles between parent and child that manifest in eating habits, 4) conditions that may have enhanced the gag reflex, such as prolonged orotrac

The relationship between appetite and food preferences in British and Australian children.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive traits and food preferences are key determinants of children's eating patterns but it is unclear how these behaviours relate to one another. This study explores relationships between appetitive traits and preferences for fruits and vegetables, and energy dense, nutrient poor (noncore) foods in two distinct samples of Australian and British preschool children. METHODS: This study reports secondary analyses of data from families participating in the British GEMINI cohort study (n = 1044) and the control arm of the Australian NOURISH RCT (n = 167). Food preferences were as

A preclinical model of binge eating elicited by yo-yo dieting and stressful exposure to food: effect of sibutramine, fluoxetine, topiramate, and midazolam.

RATIONALE: Preclinical models are needed to investigate the neurobiology and psychobiology of binge eating and to identify innovative pharmacotherapeutic strategies. OBJECTIVES: A modification of the model based on the combination of cyclic caloric restrictions and acute stress was developed to further increase its face validity and reliability and, for the first time, to assess its predictive value. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four groups of female rats were employed: group 1 was normally fed and not stressed on the test day (25th); group 2 was fed normally but was exposed to an acute stress on

Effects of a single or repeated administration of the benzodiazepine inverse agonist FG7142 on behaviour and cortical adrenoceptor binding in the rat.

We have reported previously an increase in the number of beta-adrenoceptors in mouse cerebral cortex 7 days after kindling of seizures by repeated once-daily administration of the benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonist, FG7142. In subsequent experiments, an even larger increase in beta-adrenoceptor number was found 7 days after a single injection of this compound. The present experiments investigated whether FG7142-induced changes in adrenoceptor binding are also found in the rat and whether the effects of a single and repeated injections of this drug differ quantitatively. In view of the anx

Behavioral characteristics of vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain).

A group of vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain--DI) and a group of normal Long-Evans rats were successively evaluated on visual discrimination, olfactory discrimination, delayed alternation at short and long intertrial intervals (ITIs), approach-avoidance conflict in a straight runway, and open-field behavior. It was found that DI rats adapted more slowly than normal rats in the T-maze, in the straight runway, and they were slower to emerge into the open field. The DI rats were impaired relative to normal animals on the discrimination tasks (visual and olfactory), but they were not

Chemogenetic suppression of NST GABA neurons reveals inhibition of behavioral responses to sucrose and quinine.

Central taste processing begins in the rostral nucleus of the solitary tract (rNST), a region rich in GABAergic neurons. We recently showed that chemogenetic activation of rNST GABA/GAD65 neurons dampens behavioral acceptance of palatable (sucrose and maltodextrin) and increases acceptance of unpalatable (quinine) taste stimuli (Travers et al., 2022). Here, we investigated whether suppressing activity in rNST GABA neurons likewise affects behavioral taste responsivity. Using mice in which Cre was expressed under the control of the GAD65 promoter, we made bilateral rNST injections of a Cre-depe

Who will lose weight on sibutramine and orlistat? Psychological correlates for treatment success.

AIM: To study the associations between weight loss with sibutramine and orlistat with psychological aspects that may interact with patients' response to these drugs. METHODS: A total of 478 obese patients with a mean body mass index of 42 +/- 12 kg/m(2) gave self-reported, retrospective data on different types of previous weight loss treatments (sibutramine and orlistat, and Weight Watchers used as a control condition) including the amount of weight lost with these treatments, eating behaviour (Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire) and personality (NEO Personality Inventory - Revised). Truncal and hepatic vagotomy reduce suppression of feeding by jejunal lipid infusions.

Two experiments investigated mechanisms underlying the decrease in food intake produced by lipid infusions into the jejunum. In Experiment 1, male Sprague-Dawley rats with truncal abdominal vagotomy (TVx), selective hepatic-branch vagotomy (HVx), or sham vagotomy received repeated 7 h infusions of linoleic acid (LA), corn oil (CO), or saline through indwelling jejunal catheters. Cumulative food intake was measured at 1, 3, 6, and 23 h. LA and, to a lesser extent, CO suppressed food intake in excess of the caloric value of the load. This effect was eliminated by TVx, which significantly attenua

Differential effects of the selective orexin-1 receptor antagonist SB-334867 and lithium chloride on the behavioural satiety sequence in rats.

Recent studies have shown that acute systemic administration of the selective orexin-1 receptor antagonist SB-334867 significantly reduces food intake in rats. Although this anorectic action of orexin-1 receptor blockade is associated with an acceleration in the transition from eating to resting, it is widely recognised that the behavioural indices of satiety are not dissimilar to those of illness. In this context, Experiment 1 confirmed a significant anorectic effect of 90 (but not 60) mg/kg lithium chloride (LiCl) in male rats presented with palatable mash in the home-cage environment. Exper

Molting layers--alternative methods and their effectiveness.

The molting of commercial layers has been under increased scrutiny by animal rights groups, who have said that this practice is highly stres … ical changes that layers experience and do not appear to compromise the welfare status of the hens. Appetitive behaviors were not affected by strain but were affected by production phase and molting. Strain or production phase did not influence the frequency of aggressive and submissive acts. Thus, the use of alternative nonfeed withdrawal molting methods provide com …

FTO rs9939609 genotype and behavioral determinants of Mediterranean diet adherence in young women: exploratory insights into potential metabolic relevance.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic disorders such as obesity and insulin resistance result from complex interactions between genetic, behavioral, and dietary factors. The fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene has been repeatedly linked to impaired appetite control and higher obesity risk, yet the moderating role of functional dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet remain unclear. Rich in bioactive compounds and metabolic benefits, this diet offers a model for studying gene-diet interactions in metabolic health. OBJECTIVES: This pilot investigation aimed to provide an integrative perspectiv

Dynamic Relationship Between Sleep Patterns and Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: A higher prevalence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia is associated with a greater caregiver burden and increased mortality in people with dementia. Considering the possibility of a reciprocal relationship between sleep disturbances and these symptoms, time series analyses are necessary to explore the associated temporal dynamics. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine dynamic interdependencies between sleep disturbances and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in older adults. METHODS: Daily interactions between sleep patterns and behavioral and p

Central histaminergic system interplay with suppressive effects of immune challenge on food intake in chicken.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the interaction of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and histaminergic systems on appetite regulation in broilers. Effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of α-fluoromethylhistidine (α-FMH, histidine decarboxylase inhibitor), chlorpheniramine (histamine H1 receptor antagonist), famotidine (histamine H2 receptor antagonist) and thioperamide (histamine H3 receptor antagonist) on LPS-induced hypophagia in broilers were studied. A total of 128 broilers were randomly allocated into 4 experiments (4 groups and 8 replications in each experiment).

Greater hunger and less restraint predict weight loss success with phentermine treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Phentermine is thought to cause weight loss through a reduction in hunger. It was hypothesized that higher hunger ratings would predict greater weight loss with phentermine. METHODS: This is an observational pilot study in which all subjects were treated with phentermine for 8 weeks and appetite and eating behaviors were measured at baseline and week 8. Outcomes were compared in subjects with ≥5% vs. <5% weight loss, and linear regression was used to identify predictors of percent weight loss. RESULTS: Twenty-seven subjects (37 ± 4.5 years, 93.8 ± 12.1 kg, BMI 33.8 ± 3.1 kg m(-2)

Lyme disease bacterium does not affect attraction to rodent odour in the tick vector.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne pathogens experience a conflict of interest when the arthropod vector chooses a vertebrate host that is incompetent for pathogen transmission. The qualitative manipulation hypothesis suggests that vector-borne pathogens can resolve this conflict in their favour by manipulating the host choice behaviour of the arthropod vector. METHODS: European Lyme disease is a model system for studying this conflict because Ixodes ricinus is a generalist tick species that vectors Borrelia pathogens that are specialized on different classes of vertebrate hosts. Avian specialists like

Simmondsin: effects on meal patterns and choice behavior in rats.

Simmondsin, a glycoside from jojoba meal, decreases food intake after oral administration. The present experiments are designed to clarify the mechanism of simmondsin's anorectic activity. The meal pattern analysis shows that simmondsin supplementation at different doses results in a dose-dependent food intake reduction, which is more pronounced after prior simmondsin experience. The effect of simmondsin on meal patterns (decreased meal size, meal duration and eating rate, increased latency to eat) is most severe at the highest concentration. Rats familiar with simmondsin more seriously postpo
